    3. Hello All, The Dawes Rolls of 1887 are named after Congressman Henry Dawes of Missouri who was the author of the legislation that supposedly was to protect Native American rights during the Oklahoma Land Rush. By registering, Native Americans were told they would be allotted 160 acres of land per family prior to the land rush and thus be compensated for over 100 years of genocide against them by the U.S.government. Native Americans viewed this with suspicion due to the many clumsy relocation efforts in the past. Those who refused to submit feared they would be imprisoned or otherwise punished. To get on the Rolls, Natives had to anglicize their names. Rolling Thunder became Ron Thomas and so on. The worst thing was that Native fears were justified in that countless many of the Indian agents sent to register the Native Americans slipped names of friends and relatives into the rolls and stole millions of acres of land. The abuses and corruption were revealed in the Miriam Report of 1928. This 800 page report documented the massive fraud and misappropriation by the very agents sent by the government to administer the Dawes Act. It was found that in one state alone (the state is not named) that Indian held land which had totaled 138 million acres at the time of the Dawes Act was signed into law had been reduced to 47 million acres by 1934 when the act was repudiated. So once again, a program for the supposed benefit of Native Americans was in reality a legislated land grab by the United States. Genealogically, the Dawes Rolls are still one of the official records (The Guion-Miller Rolls the other) to use in documenting ones Native ancestry link. Hope this is helpful and not too terribly long-winded. James M. Grant JRedmondsr@aol.com wrote: > Hi Queen List > Spent part of this past week digging for Queens in North Ga. and N. C. 2. Hi Queen List Spent part of this past week digging for Queens in North Ga. and N. C. Monday the wife and I played like ducks in the rain. We checked out three Cool Springs Church cemeteries. One was in Tate, GA, one near Price, GA, and one between Clarkesville and Helen Ga. There were no Queens buried at the cemetery in Tate. We were lucky enough to talk to the church secretary. They had a ledger of the cemetery there. I found one Hogan there which is my material grandmother's surname. needless to said I will surly check this out. We talked to a gentleman in a restaurant where we had stopped about Queens. Bingo, he knew of a Queen who lived near there in Tate. The gentle man was nice enough to give my phone number to Mr. Queen, and he called the next day. We didn't get back home until Thursday. I returned his called and he was eager to discuss the Queens. He had been working on his wife's family and is just getting started on the Queens. It is his understanding that there is or was there sets of Queen's in Fannin Co. According to him they do not/did not claim kin to each other. (I've hear that before) He mention that he had heard of a Grayson Queen but couldn't give me any detail about him. It is Grayson, Granson, or Grandson I'm still lost on this one. Question; Are any of you familiar with the Daws or Dawson ledgers. If so would one of you familiarize me with it. Next we visited Clarkesville/Habersham County Library. Found a Ransom Queen 1921-1944 was in WW2 and a Rhoda Queen 1886-1972. Still haven't found the Cool Springs Church where Joseph H. is supposed to be buried. Although there are a lot of unmarked graves in the cemeteries we visited. Jimmy O. Redmond, Sr.

    3. Hi all, Still seeking anyone with info regarding a Mills family living near a Queen family in Montgomery County (1775-1830). A Thomas Mills m. Mary apparently had a son born there in 1814 and another in 1817. These two sons, David and Reuben married two Elliott girls in Haywood County in late 1830's with my Alfred Queen as bondsman. David, Reuben and Alfred left Haywood by 1840 and returned to Haywood (by then Jackson County) in the 1850's. Returned to the Scotts Creek area...same area they left ca 1839/40. Alfred's son married a neice of David and Reuben and Alfred's daughter married the widower of another neice. Looking for evidence of a relationship between the Queens and Mills before the 1830's in Haywood County. Gene

    3. Diane and all, Thanks for the data in ur latest msg. Will have to digest some of it before saying anything else! But... did have one large item to submit because of the THOMAS QUEEN individual listed in the data. I copied the following from a book in the Henderson County Genealogical and Historical Society regarding historical residents of Burke County. This page is transcribed verbatim: "Queen, Thomas Summary of Early Life- Thomas Queen was living in Burke County, NC at the time of his service in the Revolutionary War. He was 80 in 1832. Summary of Partisan Activity- Thomas Queen entered military service in Burke County, NC in March, 1780. He was placed in a Company commanded by Capt. John McKenzie and Lt. humphrey Barnett. Field officers included Major Bluford and Col. (William) Hill. They marched into South Carolina, joining the forces of Gen. Thomas Sumter at Brown's old fields, on the Congaree River. He was marched to several places in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. He took part in an expedition to St. Augustine, Fla., directed against hostile Creek indicns. At one time he was with the troops of Gen Anthony Wayne in Georgia. On September 8, 1781 he participated in the battle of Eutaw Springs, SC., losing his horse during the battle. Queen's total enlistment was for a period of fifteen months. (One notices that Queen served entirely under South Carolina Officers. It was common practice in 1780 and 1781 for South Carolina officers to enter North Caorlina and recruit. This was done with the approval of local militia officers, including Col. Charles McDowell of Burke County.) Summary of later life- Thomas Queen married Elizabeth________. Their children were as follows: Margaret m. Michael Butler Nancy m. Andrew Bain John Elizabeth Eliott James Thomas Queen applied for Revolutionary War pension in MORGAN County, Alabama (his place of residence) on September 1, 1832, he was granted a pension of $55.00 per annum. Thomas Queen died on March 15, 1845. His widow died shortly afterwards, in the same year. End Quote. This seems to add a few more facts to your item which included Thomas Queen. Bear in mind, this was in a book, definitely not my research. Just adding fuel, I mean, data to the fray! Isn't this interesting, all this data and I still can't pick out James C. Queen. The Moses Queen, son of William Lewis, sure does interest me. Appears there is no continuity on this individual. Hope this data helps someone. Regards, Jerry.

    3. Hi Jerry and all, Re: "Banks" Queen s/o John and Catherine Lowery-Queen: I have also seen the name transcribed as "Buckhold", it was also transcribed on the 1870 Union Co Website Census as "Buckhead". However, in trying to figure out why Missi's ancestor was know as "Banks" and not "Buck" it seemed reasonable to think that the name had been incorrectly recorded. Can't blame him a bit for choosing a nickname!!!! Jerry, in one of your recent posts you made reference to Wilkes County, GA as the birthplace of a Moses Queen. It happens that I have a two volume set of books, WILKES COUNTY, GEORGIA TAX RECORDS, 1785-1805, so decided to check for Queen or Quinn listings. The notes proved to be enlightening, but no Moses Queen listed, however an old post on GenForum may tie in with some of this. I have copied and pasted the Genforum post below, which many of you may have already seen. I know this is someone else’s version of their Queen family history and best used only as a guideline, but you have to hope that somewhere along the way some of it is right. [No disrespect to the author of this post, Bob Godfrey ....... especially if he is a member of QUEEN-L! :-)] I also found another old post at Genforum which indicates that Moses Queen, s/o William Lewis Queen, was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina. It was posted by Bill Navey on Jan. 30, 1998. Found the following in WILKES COUNTY, GEORGIA TAX RECORDS, 1785-1805; 1785 District K: William QUEEN Franklin County 287 acres - 1st quality land Notes for District K: Return for W^m Queen by William Downs, Trustee [This maybe the William Queen mentioned in Bob Godfrey’s info below. It seems to indicate that this Wm Queen did not make the return himself …… and corresponds with Mr. Godfrey’s statement that William had left Wilkes Co., GA by 1783 – dc] Note - Vol. 1, page 1, third paragraph reads: The area of Wilkes County in 1785 (including Defacto Wilkes County) included all of the area now in the counties of Lincoln, Elbert, and Wilkes: most of Oglethorpe, Madison, Taliaferro and Warren; half of Hart; and part of Clarke, Glascock, Green, Hancock, and McDuffie Counties. It was over eighty miles from north to south and fifty miles from east to west at its longest and widest points. 1795 District G - Captain Binyan’s District 014 William QUINN 200 acres 3rd quality land Wilkes County Grays Creek. Joins Moses Jackson’s land. Granted to Ja^s Matthews Notes for District G: General Note: This is the last record for this district in Wilkes County. The entire area encompassed by Captain Binion’s Company District (G) was placed into Lincoln County upon its creation in February 1796. 1799 District H – No. 7 Captain John Parks’ District 096 W^mson Bird 100 acres 1st quality land; 100 acres 2nd quality land. Wilkes County, Uptons Creek. Joins Thomas QUINN’s land. Granted to Jo^s Miller. The only other listing for similar surname beginning with “Q” is John/J^no/J. QUERNS/ QUEERNS/ QUERNES/ QURNS/ QUERRNS/ QUIRNENS. Do not believe this is a corruption of the Queen or Quinn surname but is an altogether different surname. 3. Hi Diane, Missi, and all, Diane, your note on the "Bankhead" name, I may have misread the census but I transcribed the name as "Buckhold" - a name I have noted on rare occasions. But, since BANKHEAD is a family name, it just might be Bankhead. New item: in research Wednesday before I got your note, copied down a sentence in a book just for my own info - no citation (I know, big goof!) - but I wrote down this: "Henson Queen in Cherokee County, NC, 1850, a former resident of Burke County, NC." Interesting group of Queens in Cherokee County, NC - several of James C. Queen's group, and ... Henson Queen, of Burke County. Have yet to find the connection of James C. and Henson. Any ideas? Regards, Jerry.

    2. Charlton Queen
    3. *Lexington Herald Leader, March 13, 2000 Frank W. Queen, 98, of 1507 Anniston Drive, husband of Irene Owens Queen, died Saturday. March 11, 2000, at the Hospice Care Center at St. Joseph Hospital. Born in Fannin County, Ga, he was a son of the late Harrison and Mary Ann Patterson Queen. He was a gentleman farmer and retired meat cutter for the old Lafayette Hotel and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Besides his wife, survivors include a son, Charles W. Queen, Lexington; two daughters, Nona G. Eisele and Myrtle Kathrine Beard, both of Lexington; ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home by the Re. Mark Benton and the Rev. Ernest Sacra with burial following in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 5-9pm today. **************************************************************************** *************** I have submitted this as it appeared in the paper. However, like many obits it has some incorrect data. Most notably, Mary Ann Patterson QUEEN was Frank's stepmother, his birth mother, Adra PATTERSON, having passed away while he was an infant. Also, the number of grandchildren and great grandchildren are incorrect as they do not take into account the offspring of Frank's first marrieage to Martha DEAL.
