Hello all, I have just received some sad news about my great-Uncle Woody Queen. He was 82 years old and had cancer and two weeks ago he decided that the other side would be better. I didn't know him overly well, but the few times I ever saw him he was a very nice person. I don't speak to my Queen relatives that often and if anyone could get me the obit for his death in Canton NC I would be very greatful. Thank you kindly, Cassandra Smathers

Please keep the cards and letters coming regarding your opinions or documented evidence specifying the N. C. county in which Cullowhee Creek and nearby areas south and west of the Tuckasegee River were located in ....1828-1851...... Please include source references if you are sharing documented evidence. Everyone who has responded thus far gets an A++. Reiley and Jerry, I have just placed an order with Amazon for the books/references you gave. Thanks for the info. (The very interesting tidbits concerning Cullowhee was certainly a bonus!) Thanks to all, Gene
Gene, Looks to me as if those three areas were in Haywood County from 1820 until Jackson County was formed in 1851. There may be a bit of Macon County included but it's hard to tell exactly. But the majority of land you are looking for was definitely in Haywood for those 31 years. Hope this is helpful. Sincerely, James M. Received this from another researcher and have permission to share with QUEEN-L: Begin quote: What 'theory' I have derived so far is this: The Middletons were strongly related to the Dentons, Picklesimers (Picklesimers to the Hoopers) and Chastains in those early years. The Hoopers and Picklesimers were blacksmiths, and therefore had a some what "conveniently located business" which accommodated patronage from the Cherokees as well as the early pioneers. The 1850-60 census shows that John (my ggg grandfather) lived in Webster. Of course, back then, that encompassed quite a large spot! This would be in the area across from Love's field (close to where Wal-mart is now situated... Mill crk/ Massie, etc). The road on the North side takes you to Webster which was the county seat There, to the right upon the hill just past the old Love's Crk Bpst Church, live quite a few Middletons, and I suspect this area was John's residence or close to it. Griff Middleton (former sheriff) and his family lived in that area, I believe there are still Middletons there. I will ask my third cousin, who is researching this line as well. He still lives in Sylva. I remember talking to him about this and will chat with him first chance I get. You will need to give me your 'theory' so we can add fodder to the discourse. Originally, the Middletons migrated with the Dentons from SC to the Caney Fork area. I believe my gggg grandfather, Thomas, John's father, purchased land there with Samuel Denton. There is a Hooper cemetery off Middleton Rd.at Caney Fork and there are Cowarts/Cowards, Hoopers, Middletons and others. I didn't look for Queens, but will next time I go there. My gg grandfather, Nathan Middleton, John's son, married a Picklesimer (Mary "Polly"). He was killed at the battle of Chickamauga and the area where they lived in Tuckasegee, known as Polly Middleton Gap, was named after her, as was Sam Queen Gap, after your ancestors. I asked Dad about the Queens and he said they lived in Queenstown in the John's Crk area near the Browns. Brown Mtn forms one side of Sam Queen Gap. Dad was familiar with the area (off John's Crk, ssr 1747). Hooper knob is off ssr1739, Moses Crk, off Caney Fork) I do believe we have branches of Browns and I believe a Queen or two on our family tree. Well, this is not much, but maybe you can glean something from it. I wish I could give you the exact location, and I may find out something from the info you have. Keep in touch. I'll run a copy of you last post and file it for future contact. End of quote. Gene
Hi Guys, I'm sick to death of data entry, and I've moved on to exertions of thinkin' "outside the box." 1. Does anybody know, without a doubt, that there were Queen's living in MOORE County in the 1940's? Moore borders Montgomery on the east. (Points given for marginal doubt.) 2. Has anybody identified and communicated with any OTHER [possible] John W. Queen Sr. kin in/from Montgomery County? (If yes, please elaborate!) 3. Can anybody imagine mistaking a cursive "Moore" for "Moon" as opposed to "Macon"? 4. What is the meaning of life? (Hint: It's divisible by 7, and if anybody knows this silly answer, I'll need a forklift to get my jaw back up.) 5. Should I ask a 5th question just to make this little quiz REALLY odd? :) Best regards, Gayle Phillips Cantrell gpcantrell@home.com What's my line?
I found out recently about a book entitled: Carolina Scots: An Historical and Genealogical Study of Over 100 Years of Emigration by Douglas F. Kelly and Caroline S. Kelly. The book contains information on several families, including MacQueen. Has anyone on this list read this book? Does it shed any light on our ancestry? I am curious. Phil Minch

Death certificates weren't *required* unless a doctor was in attendance -- and doctors cost *money*, especially for people out in the country. (Remember, this was well before Medicare, and health insurance was still a new thing, mostly available only in some cities.) So, it's quite possible Sim died in his sleep, or in other circumstances in which the family didn't see the need for a doctor. I caught onto this after searching the S.C. death certificate index and finding *much* fewer death certificates for the 1930s than for either the 1920s or 1940s. I asked my dad, who grew up in the '30s and '40s: he told me he didn't even know about death certificates until after he started medical school in 1953. In the case for which I was looking for a 1930s death certificate and didn't find it in the index, I was able to locate an obituary for the person in microfilm of the local newspaper. Hello folks, In follow up to my previous email regarding my quest for a copy of Sim M. Queen's death certificate, I admit that my imagination is wandering, but please humor me. My Phillips people lived in/around Alarka, SWAIN County. I'm going to verify these next vital statistics since the living can be quite informative. :) Both my FATHER and MOTHER (and all her elder siblings) were born in ETNA, MACON County in 1921 and 1924, respectively. My father grew up in SWAIN County living, at one time, "on" Alarka (hmmm...must be Alarka Ridge?); my mother, MACON. Swain County was formed from Macon and Jackson Counties in 1871. If the USGS information is correct, WHAT GEOGRAPHICAL AREA DID the ETNA POST OFFICE COVER? (Uncle Buddy?) (Mom?) My information indicates Carrie Queen Clark's daughter, Ethel Clark, married William Bowers Phillips, my 1st cousin twice removed. Bowers Phillips died and was buried in Swain County (Dehart Cemetery) in 1948. Where was Carrie Clark from about 1941-1945, after she was widowed on/about 1918. Could she have been living with her daughter, Ethel Phillips, in Swain County? After her mother, Mary Etta, died in 1941, could her father, Sim M., have been living and/or visiting with Carrie (his daughter) and Ethel (his granddaughter) at the time of his death in 1944? In SWAIN County? Would the descendant researching Carrie Etta Queen kindly contact me? For that matter, ANYBODY with descendant information on Carrie Queen Clark contact me? Is it even REMOTELY possible that Sim's death was recorded in Swain County? Doubtful...? They're both buried in Macon County... Hi Gayle, Yes it is possible, my father died and was buried in Visalia, CA . His death is recorded in that county. When my mom died, there was no plot for her there. But I promised my mom that she would be laid to rest next to her husband. So I bought two plots in Modesto, CA where they are now both buried., yet all records still say Visalia for my Dad. Marian
Hello everyone, The informant of my Great Grandmother Mary Etta [Tippett] Queen's death was was her husband, Sim M. Queen. His address is cited as what first appears to be a capital "L" followed by Etna, NC. The USGS Geographic Names Information System Query Results indicates that Etna is/was a Post Office located in Macon County (see below). Interestingly, it includes mention of Alarka. NOW, everything I've seen indicates that Alarka is in SWAIN County. The only Etna I am able to locate on a map appears to be in Macon County, BUT it is clearly closer to the Swain County line than it is to Franklin. Incidentally, I have also seen/heard it referred to as "Larky"... Until today, I had been unsuccessful in locating a copy of Sim's death certificate. Both Sim's and Mary Etta's death certificates are inexplicably missing from the Macon County Courthouse. The copy of Mary Etta's death certificate I that I received today came from the Division of Archives and History in Raleigh, but they couldn't locate Sim's. She died in 1941, and he died in 1944.
