    1. [QUEEN] The Other Side
    2. O Eugene Queen
    3. Hi all, A lady with whom I've had the great pleasure of working during the past twelve years came to my office the other week with some exciting news. She had found an old church bulletin which indicated her great grandfather was born in Randolph County, NC in 1840 and had later founded a number of churches in our area. I promised to see what I could find in the census records. Thus far, I've found him listed twice (possibly 3 times) and have confirmed 12 of his 16 children. There's nothing particularly unusual about this except that....Belinda's great grandfather was a slave. His probable identity on the 1850 census is that of a 10 year old slave boy. As we dutifully record the number of slaves owned by our distant ancestors, incidents such as this makes me so grateful that my great grandfather was not listed on some census record alongside a loom or other piece of property. Have a nice Labor Day! Gene

No, at times I can't spell either, or use good grammar. You'll catch it in the message. So, should the search for John's wife's parents be in Jackson County 1870,1880, 1900 and will two children be: Ferby and Hensley Ledford? In the 1920 Swain County census, pg 157, Alarka Creek Twp are listed "Righley and Mat Quenn" and family. We know that it's Riley Queen....and he's renting. However, two houses after his, HH157, and owning his property, are: Ledford, Hensley, 36 ..Elithebeth, wife, 42 ..Birdy, dau, 14 ..Minnie, dau, 12 ..Stanley, son, 10 ..Mandy, dau, 9 ..Allie, dau, 7 ..???, son, 6 (I have photocopied only about 2/3 of the name, but darned if it doesn't look like Seb. Clearly, the census taker couldn't spell, because of the "Elithebeth"...just like some pronounce it.) My money, 50 cents, says that Hensley Ledford (b. ca 1884) is a younger brother or cousin of Feba/Febry Ledford (b. 5-1867). The death certificate of Riley, w/Ben Herron the informant, indicates that Riley's mother was Ferby Ledford, born in Jackson Co. We also know that Riley's daughter, Minnie Queen, married a Zebulon Ledford. Was is Zeb Ledford....or Seb Ledford??? Interesting that Minnie Queen was age 13 in 1920 and Hensley Ledford's daughter, Minnie Ledford, was age 12. Any of this news to you? Gene --------------D4447A1C744F979F18B58125--

    3. I am researching my g-grandfather, Alexander Henderson QUEEN. He married Susan SCULLY, b. 22 Mar 1864, Hyde Park, Antrim, Ireland on 24 Jul 1885, also in Hyde Park. Their son, Thomas Walter QUEEN , b. 16 Feb 1890 in Belfast married Amy Jane TAIT, b. 29 Oct 1887, Govan, Scotland. Alexander was a designer at the Old Park Print Works in Belfast (the building was still there when I visited in 1985 and was owned by the water department). The family emigrated to New York, year unknown. My grandfather, Thomas Walter QUEEN, ended up in San Diego. Is this line familiar to anyone? Thanks. Jane, Arizona

    3. Hi Gene and all, In response to Gene's post on the Habersham Co, GA census data, thought I'd pass along some related information. But first let me explain the connection. 1. Richard Carney, b. 1822/23 SC + Catherine Queen, b. abt 1826 NC, probable dtr/of James C. Queen of NC 2. George W. Carney, b. 8/31/1852 Union Co., GA + Martha L. Anderson, b. 8/4/1847 3. Ida Carney, b. 12/1874 + Joseph Asbury Sosebee, b. 5/ 25/1879 Union Co., Ga. s/o Thomas Andrew Sosebee Below is information received from a SOSEBEE researcher. Expecting more info from this researcher and will pass along anything new that turns up. Also, we already know from Betty Knight's research, that Meriday Queen, Catherine's probable brother, married Elizabeth Brackett [dtr/of Felix Brackett] of Habersham Co., GA......So this looks like yet another connection between the Habersham Co. folks and the Union Co. folks!. Hope you all are having a great summer. Diane Carney > Isaac Sosebee and Sampson Sosebee were Joseph Asbury Sosebee's > g-grandfather's brothers. 1. [QUEEN] 1910 Census
    2. Hi All, On the 4 May, 1910 census Morganton Township,Burke Co., NC. There is listed as one of Pinkney Gaither Queens', a child by the name of Dolphus D.(,age 0/12) a son. That child is my father Pinkney Grant Queen b. March 30, 1910, d. January 24, 1989. I asked my mother why the name was that way and she told me, Sarah Ann (my grandmother) told her that was what Pinkney Gaither told the census taker, But Grandma told him, that child was not going to named Dolphus and the name was put on the birth certificate as Pinkney Grant Queen. I just wanted everyone to have the correct information. The name Junie, is officially June Jamison . I have information on all of Pinkney Gaither Queen and Sarah Ann Dale's children and if anyone would like to have it, please let me know. I would like to at this time thank all of you for the time and effort you have put into research, since going on this web sight, I have found much and make connections with distant cousins on both my father and my mother's line. Thanks, Nancy Queen Wiley Burke, Va.

The Bulletin of the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon Co., NC (vol. 28, issue 3) includes an article on References to Petitions, Cleveland Co., NC, of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, 1841-1868. Among the petitions is one for Cynthia Queen, widow of John Queen, petitioning for her allowance, in February 1867. Later that same court session, she sues the heirs of John Queen, deceased, for her dower. These are found on p. 141 of this issue of BGSOTC. Reiley Kidd Seattle

    3. The Bulletin of the Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County, NC (vol. 28, issue #3, pp. 107-ff.) includes the Agricultural Schedule of RCNC. Among those listed is a William Queen (p. 112-1113). This listing gives his production for the year, and may be of interest to someone on the list. Also on the list (pp. 116-117) is Margaret McFarland (possibly Margaret Queen McFarland, who married John McFarland/McFarlin in 1791), and a William McFarland, probably her son.

    3. Winnie (Caroline Winnifred) was the second wife of George Queen. She was married three times: First to a fellow named Birdsong, secondly to Benjamin Griffin, and thirdly to George Queen. Her daughter Frances, by her second marriage to Benjamin Griffin, married George Fiveash on 11/28/1873 in Benton Co, MS. I've been swamped with other things, but FINALLY I found a few things to contribute to the list. I found a Winnie Queen in the 1880 federal census for Benton Co., MS, and I cannot place her in my Queens. She's found in the household of George W. Fiveash, age 26 (with wife Frances, age 27, b. 1. [QUEEN] 1840/50 Habersham Co., GA
    2. O Eugene Queen
    3. I have developed no new clues from the Habersham Co, GA census data regarding the Joseph and Hugh Queen listed on pg 137 and Samuel Queen listed on pg 148 of the 1840 census. 1840 census, pg 137 Joseph Queen, age 40<50 Hugh Queen, age 20<30 (He two names from Joseph) pgs 148-149 (selected names): Gabriel Sisk, Sr., age 60<70 Gabriel Sisk, Jr., probable age 30<40, although male 70<80 in HH Benjamin West, age 20<30 Samuel Queen, age 60<70 Isaac Sosebee, age 40<50 Nathaniel Trotter, age 30<40 Alexander Mauldin, age 40<50 John Sisk, age 20<30 Carter Allen, age 40<50 Solomon Sosebee, age 20<30 Bartlett Sisk, age 20<30 Sampson Sosebee, age 50<60 1850 census, pgs 238-245 Bartlett Sisk, age 35, born NC Joseph and Usley Queen (and children) all born in NC Sampson Sosebee, age 64 Carter Allen, age 55, born in NC Solomon Sosebee, age 39, born in SC Gabril Sisk, Jr, age 43 Benjamin West, age 38, born in SC Gabril Sisk, Sr, age 72, born in NC John Sisk, age 40, born in SC Nathaniel Trotter, age 40 Isaac Sosebee, age 53 Alexander Mauldin, age 57 Notes: The Samuel Queen of 1840 is the "correct" age of the Samuel of 1830 Haywood, NC; but the "wife" is the same age, 50<60, as in 1830 Haywood. One girl has aged "correctly" 10 years to age 30<40, another "correctly" to age 20<30 and a new one appears as <5. Son has aged from 5<10 to 15<20. Alfred Queen of 1810, if this is the correct family, has gone to TN as expected. I did find it "interesting" that all the "neighbors" listed above for 1840 were on the same page or one page from Samuel Queen....but 11 to 12 pgs from Joseph and Hugh...and names on the 1840 census do not include names of others in household. Yet, on the 1850 census; the names which were "near" Samuel Queen on 1840 are now "near" Joseph Queen (within 7 pgs which includes listing of all family members). I conclude, perhaps erroneously, that the neighbors didn't move...but Joseph did. The Samuel Queen of 1840 Habersham is thought to be the Samuel of 1850 Rabun County. If anyone can draw any research clues regarding Queens from any of this, I'd welcome your input. Gene

    3. Found this on the Free family list. I am the great grand daughter of Samuel Howard Free and Mary Elizabeth Queen. They had 8 children: James Preston, Nathan Smith, William Cephas, Andrew Marion, (my Grandfather), Morgan Noah, Ida Mae, and Mack Charles. Andrew married twice and had 12 children, my father Floyd Emmett being the fourth child. Samuel was born in 1852 in Wilsonville or Waynesville, Tennessee. Andrew was born in 1881 in the same place. Floyd was born in 1906 in New Market, Tennessee. Andrew moved his family to Ware Shoals, South Carolina. I wonder if there is any connection to the Free's in your tree.
