Hi Gang, Just signed on to the list. Seems I've run across a photo postcard sent to my great - grandma Lizzie Liles probably around 1910 or later. The photo is of three men, Jim Queen, John Summerall, and Jula Glaspia (?). They were probably in Sulphur Springs or Harris (Rutherford Co.) NC as that's where she had been until the 1910 census. Anyone wants a scan, send me your email addy privately and I'll send it on... If anyone knows of any Splawn connections in that area, let me know! Thanks, Tamara http://www.bearsandhares.com http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~tamara/genie1.html

It was either McQueen or MacQueen. The Mc and Mac were dropped so that they could be officers in the military and gain land here. I think there are two lines of Queens. One came here in the 1600's and went to Maryland and the other went to Virginia in the 1700's. Sue
John: I don't think everyone thinks that the name is strictly a Southern phenomenon at all. But for a long time it seemed that most of us were descended from old William Queen on this list. It's been great to get some folks NOT descended from him and find out about other Queen's that came here. You mentioned the name also being Irish............Well, my grgrandmother, Katy Colley b. 1860 in GA, made a "family tree" in 1972 that I have a copy of. She knew her grandfather, Joseph Queen well, because he was living with her family on the 1880 GA census. (Joseph, s/o Wm. Lewis, s/o William Queen) She clearly marked that our Joseph Queen was of "Irish Descent". Have we ever really determined where this line of Queen's came from? My pocket theory ( totally unsubstantiated ) is that both these lines are connected in Prince Georges County, Maryland. The Jerningham line springs from the marriage of Marsham Queen and Mary Jameson. Marsham had a brother named William b. 1704 who disappeared (genealogically speaking) Remember that "Our William" told his grandchildren that he was born "about" 1720 in Maryland. Well, it does not strain the imagination to envision William (son of Marsham) having a son named William at "around" 1720. Particularly when you see the reoccurrence of the Jameson name down through the years in our tree. I just hope that one of these days we find out the real truth. I certainly hope the inference is not that the name Queen is somehow only non-Catholic. The name is also an Irish one and I can personally attest to the fact that some people named Queen are Catholic. Sometimes I get the impression from this list that people also think the name is strictly a Southern phenomenon. My ancestry is from Massachusetts, with links to Canada and then unclear lines from there.
