    1. [DRAKE-L] Christmas poem to all who served
    2. Barb Marshall
    3. The following was sent by AlfDrake@aol.com and thought by Rootsweb computer to be spam. Sorry Alf but I'm passing it along and hoping it gets through this time. List Mom Barb ===================== I am forwarding this message from my niece (whose husband is in the Navy and will be relocating soon to Guam). And to those among us, and to family members, that they may be touched by our many unsung hero's. Merry Christmas to all of you. ---- Christmas poem 'Twas the night before Christmas He lived all alone In a one bedroom house made of Plaster and Stone I had come down the Chimney With presents to give. And to see just whom In this home did live. I looked all about A strange sight I did see. No tinsel, no presents, Not even a tree. No stocking by the mantle, Just boots filled with sand. On the wall hung pictures Of far distant lands. With medals and badges, Awards of all kinds, A sober thought Came through my mind. For this house was different, It was dark and dreary, I found the home of a soldier, Once I could see clearly. The soldier lay sleeping, Silent, alone, Curled up on the floor In this one bedroom home. The face was so gentle, The room in such disorder, Not how I pictured A United States Soldier. Was this the hero Of whom I'd just read? Curled up on a Poncho, The floor for a bed? I realized the families That I saw this night, Owed their lives to these soldiers Who were willing to fight. Soon round the world, The children would play, And grownup would celebrate A bright Christmas Day. They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, Because of the soldiers, Like the one lying here. I couldn't help wonder How many lay alone, On a cold Christmas Eve In a land far from home. The very thought Brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees And started to Cry. The soldier awakened And I heard a rough voice, "Santa don't cry, This life is my choice." The solider rolled over And drifted to sleep, I couldn't control it, I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, So silent and still And we both shivered >From the cold night's chill. I didn't want to leave On that cold, dark, night, This guardian of Honor So willing to fight. The solider rolled over, With a voice soft and pure, Whispered, "Carry on Santa, It's Christmas Day, All is secure." One look at my watch, And I knew he was right. "Merry Christmas my friend, And to all a good night." This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable... Please. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many People as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. service men and women for being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed. 1. Re: [DRAKE-L] William DRAKE of Nash Co, NC
    2. Dear Jane and cousins, Jane wrote << Also, I must have been asleep at the wheel here. I have William dying in NC but of course, I have no citation for said fact. Can you help me out.? William is not a direct line for me but I like to keep up with family gossip.>> Well, so did I, but I think I got it from you. I do not see William listed in the list of NC testators or in the index to GA wills. He *is* found dying 1801 as per Watson, Estate Records in the Deed Books of Nash County. There is nothing there to suggest that he was not a resident of Nash Co., NC. /Charles ______________________________ --B_3059479650_7282289

But my James is the son of Absolom QUEEN and Nancy MURPHY (both of Loudoun co., VA). My James m. 1. [QUEEN] James M. Queen
    2. Thanks to the kindness of Herman "Joe " McAtee for allowing me to use material from his book to share online. Joe and Natalie Baker spent countless days and hours doing their research and I am so appreciative because my opportunities to travel and do research is very limited. QUEEN HISTORY After the Revolutionary War, in the year of 1785, a league of sixty Catholic families was formed in Maryland, (mainly residents of St. Mary & Charles Counties), to emigrate to Kentucky. The Maryland League included among others, these families: Henry McAtee, James Queen, Bernard Cissell, William Brewer, Henry Norris, Ignatius Cissell, John Baptist Dant, Philip Miles, John Spalding, Philip Mattingly and Harry Miles. They journeyed to Pittsburg and then in flatboats down the Ohio River to Maysville, Kentucky, then over-land to Boonesborough and ending up in Nelson County. (now, Nelson, Washington & Marion Counties). [61 Our common Ancestor, James M. Queen, was born in 1820 in Kentucky. Evidently he came to Brown Township, Martin County, Indiana as a young man and married at age 19 to Mary Magdalen Strange. They had 2 children: Joseph born in 1841 and William Ignatius, born in May 1845. [71 Our problem is in connecting James M. Queen with the other Kentucky Queens. Although we have no photograph of James M. Queen, his description as listed in his Civil War Papers reflects the following: He was 42 years old, had hazel eyes and dark hair, was 5 feet and 8 inches tall and had a fair complexion. He had enlisted from Martin County, Indiana and was a farmer by occupation. (Family legend has it that he enlisted in the Army to make a better living for his family; farming ground being poor even then in Martin County and he had a hard time making ends meet. No one knew where he had gone until word of his death came a few months later.) He was reported "Died of disease at Danville, Kentucky on November 20, 1862 and is buried at City Cemetery there with other Civil War Soldiers.[71 James M.'s first wife, Mary Magdalen Strange Queen was a daughter of Ignatius Strange and ------------------ She was born in 1822 and died April 7, 1846 at age 24. She is buried at Old St. Joe Cemetery at Naval Surface Weapons Center, Crane, INJ81 Of their son Joseph, we know nothing further than he was listed in the 1850 Martin County Census as 9 years old and born in Indiana. The 1860 Martin County Census lists him as 19 years old. By 1870 he would have been 29 years old and probably married and moved away as he is not listed. QUEEN HISTORY Their son William Ignatius was listed as 5 years old, born in Indiana, in the 1850 Census and on through the 1870 Census where he is listed as 25 years old, On February 26, 1867 he married Cecelia Ann Kidwell, a daughter of Sylvester and Mary Ann Clements Kidwell.[9 & 101 James M. Queen married 2nd, Priscilla Miles, a daughter of John B. Miles. We have not been able to find her mother's name. Priscilla was born April 17, 1828 in Casey County, Kentucky. The Miles family moved to Martin County, Indiana where Priscilla Married James M. on February 29, 1848 at St. Peters Catholic Church in Montgomery, Daviess County, Indiana. [111 They had eight children: Now continue with the James M. Queen Families and Descendants..

    1. [QUEEN] Queen-Steelman
    2. For anyone interested in the same Queen lineage that is mine (which is from NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, PENNSYLVANIA, and MARYLAND) maybe the following will be of help: I was born in Baltimore, MD. I may have cousins still in the Baltimore area. These cousins are the children of my father's only brother, FURMAN W. QUEEN. Furman married Mary TYSON (from N or S Carolina). Their children are ALFRED, ELVIRA, ROGER, SUSAN, BARBARA and WILLIAM. I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO FIND THEM! My father was WILLIAM H. QUEEN (4th) born in Philidelphia, PA - married Manila STORIE. He was the son of WILLIAM H. QUEEN (3rd) born and died in New Jersey - married Myrtle McKenzie STRONG. He was the son of WILLIAM H. QUEEN (2nd) 1841-1917 born Brooklyn, NY - married Eliza STEELMAN (1856-1934) Eliza was the daughter of HEZEKIAH STEELMAN, Jr. and Ruth STEPHENSON. Hezekiah Jr. was the son of HEZEKIAH STEELMAN and Anne ESTELL. Hezekiah was the son of JONATHAN STEELMAN and Hannah CORSON. Jonathan was the son of MATTHIAS STEELMAN and Sarah ADAMS. Matthias was the son of PETER STEELMAN and Gartara KEEN. Peter was the son of HANS MANSSON and Ella STILLE. The name change between Hans Mansson and his son Peter Steelman was brought about due to Hans having changed his name to Mansson just prior to coming to this country in 1634 from Sweden. After Hans' death in 1691, all of his sons (Peter was one of six sons) changed the name back to Steelman. However, the name Steelman was technically not Hans' surname in Sweden. Hans was the son of Sven BENGTSSON and Brita LILLIEBIELKIE. At some point Sven had been knighted and in being knighted his name was changed for him to "Man of Steel". Well, his son, Hans, committed some offense and he didn't want to bring disgrace upon his father and family and so he changed his own surname and chose the name Mansson because, at that time, there were no other families by that name anywhere around where he lived in Sweden - therefore he wouldn't bring shame on any other families either. As punishment for his offense Hans was "sent" to this country. That's why he came here, not as either Bengtsson or Steelman (Man of Steel) but as Mansson. Later, when his sons changed the family name back, the family name had become Steelman (Man of Steel). Is anyone out there doing research on the same family? I have most of the sibling names to go with the above listing.

    2. Looking for my grandparents, William H. (HARRY) QUEEN and wife MYRTLE McKENZIE STRONG in NJ. She died 1920 and he in 1938 - both in NJ. Harry was son of WILLIAM HENRY QUEEN and ELIZA STEELMAN. Myrtle was daughter of JOHN STRONG and JEAN McKENZIE. According to Myrtle's death cert, John Strong was from England and Jean McKenzie was from Glasgow, Scotland. Don't know if John was ever even in U.S. Ggrand, Wm H born in Brooklyn, NY and wife ELIZA born in Denisville,Cape May, NJ. I can trace STEELMAN family back to 1634 in U.S. and into Sweden to 1512. Will post more information later. Gloria (Queen) gloriah4@juno.com
