    3. Regarding recent posts of Gayle and Mandy, the following is provided for any possible value: Reference (Gayle): John Hall bought land for $9.15 on 12-25-1832 being the land on which John Jones and Josiah Jones "now" live, adjoining land of Robert Hall and land on which Hugh Queen now lives. Reference (Mandy): J. W. Quinn, Macon Co., NC 1840 census: Aged 30<40 plus 1 male 16<20 Comments: 1830 Macon County census pg 26: James Quinn, male 20<30 and female 15<20. Page 2: John Hall age 40<50 with others in HH Page 16: James Queen age 20<30 (b. ca 1808, son of Alfred?) female 15<20 (Isabella?) next name: Josiah Jones age 40<50 with others in HH Page 18: William Morgan age 50<60 2 males 20<30 2 males 15<20 others Page 20: Mary Queen age 30<40 (head of household) male <5 male 5<10 Page 25: William Morgan age 30<40 female 20<30 female 5<10 Page 32: John Hall age 20<30 w/female 20<30 next name: William Queen age 20<30 female 20<30 female 5<10 ...Assume that this is William Queen, son of Henson Queen of ca 1742 and Sarah Hampton Queen? Also assume that this is father of Samuel Patton Queen who was born on 12-16-1833 in MACON Co.? Further, assume that the oldest female is Mary Ann Patton, wife of William.) Please note that there are differing assumptions concerning the ancestor of this William Queen. Macon Co. Marriages: Maxwell Queen and Sela Rose 12-20-1832 by H. G. Woodfin, Deputy Clerk Wm. B. Morgan and Mary Queen 2-3-1833 by John Hall, Clerk Jessey Sherrill and Margaret Queen 10-26-1833 John Turner and Mary Queen 11-8-1834 Discussion: Who is the John Hall who bought the land per Gayle's reference? The John Hall of page 2 or the one of page 32 with a William Queen living nearby? If we consider the land on which "Josiah Jones" now lives, then he lives next door to James Queen, son of Alfred of 1810? Is the John Hall the man who was Clerk at the time of marriage of Wm B Morgan to Mary Queen in 1833? Clerks have a way of getting land sold by sheriffs. And...just for kicks...the Mary Queen age 30<40 (= born ca 1790-1800) of the 1830 census, was she the Mary Queen who married Wm B. Morgan in 1833 or John Turner in 1834, or neither? (With two young children and no husband in her household in 1830, I'm going to assume that she had been married and her Queen husband is now deceased.) Was she the Mary Ann State (Slate) who married Timothey in Haywood in 1816? Was she the Polly Queen who was age 63 and back in Haywood in 1860 with John State (Slate) age 97 also in the household? Comments anyone....especially challenges to the William Queen assumptions listed above. Gene

    3. Hi Gayle and all, Some very interesting information which you have presented, especially with the dates in Macon, the Joneses and the possible SC connection. Folks familiar with William Queen know of a Hall and Jones connection. Does this Hugh tie into any of "our" Queens? Does a bear have hair? I hope that interest can be aroused regarding this post. I could easily be persuaded to join a serious research effort regarding the Joneses, Halls, etc. The 1828-1835 period of Haywood and Macon Counties still hold many secrets concerning Queen families. 3. Hi All! Here is all I have on the Queen Family: Charles Queen, B. 1835 in SC, Died 1908 and burried at Cunningham Cemetery, Athens, McMinn Co., TN. Married Sarah Jane Hayes, 23 Jan 1868 in Monroe Co., TN. Sarah was born in 1840 and died in 1903. (These dates come from the head stones.) The son of Charles and Sarah is; Thomas Queen, B. 28 Jan 1871, D. 31 Oct. 1945 at Athens, Tn. He Married Emily Russell( Dau. of Issac Leo Russell and Mary Dianne Slack) B.31 Dec 1869, D. Mar 1932 In Athens, TN. The children of Tom and Mary Dianne(called Aunt Polly) were: Martha Ella (Queen) Knox John Henry Queen Samuel Russell Queen Mary Jane Queen * Martha Ella Queen Knox was my grandma and use to rock and hum to me when I was small. (I give her credit for much of my love of music.) B. 12Jan 1902 in Athens (McMinn Co.), TN D. 3Nov 1983. Married Luther NMN Knox . I can give you much more on the Russells, Knoxs, Ogles and Carmacks if you wish but I don't think most of you are interested. I have the pension numbers from the American Revolution on several of my grandpas and can go back to 6 AD on the Ogle side(if anyone is interested). I think that what interest me the most is why? Why did they leave Ireland, Wales, England and Scotland? During the 1500's , the English Crown started a policy of Plantations in Ireland where by Friends of the Crown from Scotland were given large farms in Ireland in order to disenfranchise the Irish Catholics. This was largely unsucessful and was stopped. In about 1630-1960 the 30 years war took place with Prods fighting Caths. At about the same time, the English Civil War was going on and at the end of this horror the soldiers of Scotland (the finest soldiers in Europe at the time) were given land in Ireland as pay for service. Now, Most Highland Scots were Roman Catholic prior to the late 1500. But--due to mass murder buy the forces of Cromwell and the non acceptence of Scots who had become Presp. by the English Crown (who was Anglican), Scots went to France, Canada and the Thirteen (ToBe) States. This was a small Migration. The Jacobite Wars were next when the supporters of the Stuart Lines clain to the Crown of England ,1700-1745. The Highlanders supported the Jacobite cause (Most) and lost. The English proceded to kill and enslave most of the highlands and those who could escape, did. This lead to the American Scottish Hate of the English (most) that lead to the Am. Rev. The MacQueens were fromthe north end of the Isle of Skye and were of the clan MacDonald. They were highlanders. John Prebble is a good author to read about the fate of our Highlanders. 3. Hi all, I have had, and still do have, a great deal on my plate, so I apologize for throwing in only tidbits, but you never know... According to my cousin, Connie Barnes Southard, her QUEEN documentation goes back to the 1700's, with their migration to NC from the Columbia, SC area. I eventually (gasp!) intend to share what I have with her in hopes of discovering any apparent discrepancies and potential leads. Until then, perhaps kind soul out there can shed light on this as well. I guess my question at this time would be is/was there a Burke County anywhere near the Columbia, SC area? John W. QUEEN, Jr. --> Sim M. QUEEN --> Martha Ella QUEEN Arvey --> Lois Arvey Phillips --> Gayle Phillips Cantrell John W. QUEEN, Jr. --> Sim M. QUEEN --> Mary Jane QUEEN Burnett --> Bana Burnett Barnes --> Connie Barnes Southard Very best regards, Gayle Cantrell gpcantrell@home.com P.S. Mandy, was Martha 38 or 28 on the 1850 census? Thanks! 1. [QUEEN] Senior, Junior
    2. James B. Hardin
    3. There were three major considerations in assigning the titles Junior & Senior to a child. Father-Son: John Henry Doe & wife named a son John Henry Doe, Junior at birth to forever distinguish son from father. The son was often known as "Junior" within the family and sometimes outside the family (e.g. at school). However "Juniors" were often known by their middle name or a nickname" within the family and outside the family. Usage in public life: John Henry Doe & wife named a son John Henry Doe at birth. Junior was not a part of his name given at birth. There was no Junior" until father and son were both buying land or otherwise participating in community life at the same time. Records would refer to the father as "John Henry Doe, Senior" and the son as "John Henry Doe, Junior"; or, to the father as "John Henry Doe" and the son as John Henry Doe, Junior." Sometimes there are a string of a certain name. This was usually handled as follows: John Henry Doe, Senior; John Henry Doe, Junior; John Henry Doe, III; John Henry Doe, IV; etc. Some long range planners used "I" & "II" instead of "Senior" & "Junior". (Also "Senior" & "II".) Although Roman numerals have normally been used, both cardinal and ordinal numbers have also been used (e.g. John Henry Doe, 2nd; John Henry Doe, Second.) Usage in honoring illustrious family members: I have a rich relative, John Paul Doe, that needs buttered-up, we have the same surname, so my son is named John Paul Doe. Whether or not he is named "Junior" at birth, where both are buying land or otherwise participating in community life at the same time, the younger was sometimes named "Junior" in records to distinguish between them. Sometimes the family called the younger "Junior" to distinguish between them. String of a certain name: 1. John Henry Doe & son John Henry Doe - until son comes of age. 2. John Henry Doe (or John Henry Doe, Senior) & son John Henry Doe, Junior - until father dies. 3. John Henry Doe, Senior (son Junior from 2.) & son John Henry Doe - until son comes of age. 4. John Henry Doe (or John Henry Doe, Senior) & son John Henry Doe, Junior (son John Henry Doe from 3.) - until father dies. 5. Go through cycle again. Bad case scenario: You find decades of the same name with each father and son (after the first one of the name - this one will not appear as "Junior" under most conditions) being alternately "Junior" & "Senior in public records (but perhaps not in family records). There were six or eight generations of the same name in one family genealogy I saw. Worst case scenario: Neither family or public records bothered to distinguish father from son. I am sure this whole thing is confusing. The above is true to my experience as a genealogist to the best of my knowledge & belief. James B. Hardin

There were many white slave-owning Queens, and some of the non-white Queens may have gotten their surname from their owners. However, there was also a large free Queen family in the region. Odds are good that your line was free, and there is another explanation for the free family's surname origin. Between 1796 and 1813, various members of the Queen family instituted a rash of freedom petitions in Southern Maryland and D.C. courts. They claimed that they were legally entitled to their freedom because of their descent from Mary Queen, who had supposedly been a free woman. Elderly white members of the community were deposed for these cases, but their testimony conflicted as to whether Mary had been free or not. They also disagreed as to her origins. One person recalled her as a "South American Indian", another as being "from England". Much of this testimony was hearsay of hearsay, and none too reliable. However, the deposition of Benjamin Duvall reveals the most likely version of events, because he actually knew Mary Queen. [This deposition is in Nancy Queen v. Rev. Charles Sewall, Charles County Court Proceedings, Liber IB, 1796-97.] Duvall's father, Marcen Duvall of Anne Arundel County, had bought another slave--Sarah, a "Mundingo Negro"--off of the same boat that Mary Queen came in on. Also on the boat was Golden Coast Tom, purchased by "old Mr. Murdock". Thus this ship would appear to have contained West Africans. Duvall knew Mary Queen because she came to his father's plantation to visit her shipmate Sarah, and the two women spoke the same foreign language. Duvall was about eight when Mary was bought, placing her arrival ca. 1721. According to Duvall's testimony, it looks like Mary was probably in her early teens when she arrived. Mary's owner was James Carroll, who called her "his Pappow Queen", because she claimed to be a queen in her own country. Mary's skin color was "very yellow". She "wore beads on her arms and had her head dressed with them...and twisted round her hair, which was...near a yard long. And on the top she had a knot of beads." Mary had a mulatto son named Ralph, whose father was reputed to be "Thomas Barm who kept her as a mistress". Although Mary's great-granddaughter Nancy Queen lost her freedom suit, some members of the Queen family did manage to attain their freedom. Edward Queen was freed by his owner John Ashton in 1791 in PG County. He then sued Ashton for having held him in slavery, but lost the suit. Edward died in Baltimore in 1798. Other free Queens show up in D.C., Baltimore, Prince George's County, and Anne Arundel County records beginning around this time. In D.C., Queens were among the wealthiest members of the free black community during the antebellum period. During the late 1800s, Queens in Charles and PG Counties married into the mulatto deme that was beginning to self-identify as "Wesorts". Today, some descendants of this community pass for "Piscataway Indians", although evidence for their Piscataway ancestry is circumstantial and quite dubious. The records in D.C. and Southern MD have been fairly well preserved. If your Queen line was free, with any luck you could be able to trace them back to 1800 or even earlier. If they were enslaved, it will be much more difficult. If you can get your line back to the early 1800s, I can give you citations to the court cases to see if any of those names match. Also check Paul Heinegg's website at: www.freeafricanamericans.com. He has an entry on the Queen family. Thomas tombrown@jhu.edu --part1_61.a3d6b23.2788ec45_boundary--

    1. Queen Families in Maryland
    2. I would like to correspond with persons researching the QUEEN lineage in Maryland. I have successfully traced John H. Queen (ca. 1855-1927) and wife (Mary) Eliza Alcorn (ca. 1862-1917) to 1880, residing in Baltimore City. Moving beyond 1880 has been a challenge. Per the 1870 Anne Arundel census there is a Henry Queen residing in the Crownsville district: household of Henry Queen 43, Black, Carpenter, born in MD (as is wife and children); wife is Caroline 40, a cook; William H. 17; John H. 15; Rachel 14; Amelia 10; Christopher 9; Josiah 7; and Elija J. 4. It is my belief that the John reflected in this census record is my John H. Queen, however I have not yet been able to confirm. The names William and Amelia appear among his children. Information has been shared with me that a Dr. William Queen of Anne Arundel county was a slave holder who might of have been the owner of Henry Queen and his family. I would appreciate information regarding the slaves of William Queen and his Estate information. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may be related to or researching the above families. I am willing to work with persons connected to these families. Celeste

    2. RITAB
    3. Alas, I would settle for a link to ANY of the darn Queens listed. My Hence (probably Henson) has a name, but no marriage (to Nancy York), death, or land record info. As for the Scotch, Bourbon, etc., this Scots Irish lass prefers Margaritaville! Happy New Year everyone! Rita Queen Bartmess
