Hi All, In light of the recent discussions on Queen/Hall/Jones, I went over some of my records. I have partial copies from a book entitled "RUTHERFORD COUNTY, NC. WILL AND MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS 1783-1868" by James E. & Vivian Wooley. Does anyone have access to the entire book? Here is a will I found (it happens to be on the same page as a Queen will). I only had copies of Queen references made, well, actually Mandy had someone do these look ups and they made us copies of all Queen references from the book and this Jones will happens to be on one of those pages. Very interesting. Is this Sarah Jones *****, daughter of the said John, the wife of James Queen (brother of Joseph H. who married Ursula). Page 58. 17 July 1826 Recorded, Sept. Court 1826 I, JOHN JONES, being sick and weak in body but of perfect mind & memory. I give to my wife, SARAH JONES, 100 acres of land, also all stock, tools, & household furniture to dispose of as she thinks proper. I give my dtr. I give to my son DAVID JONES, I give the 100 acres that I lent to my wife until her death. To my dtr. JANE BALDRIDGE, I forgive the interest of a note of $100 that I hold of hers. I give to my dtr. Elaine, please come in on this and straighten me out, Gayle's post appears to be an extremely promising link to the Hugh Queen of GA. who, I believe, is noted as a son of the Samuel and Nancy Queen, who first appeared (Joseph, Hugh and Samuel) in GA on the 1840 census of Habersham, then Hugh appeared in Rabun Co., GA in 1846 concerning, "I, Hugh Queen, do hereby certify that if ever I said that James Hunnicutt stole a hog or hogs that I was in a passion and said it for the purpose of aggrevation....". Hugh then appears in 1850 Rabun Co and later census reports. Key data: Hugh Queen, (born 1808-1811 NC) m. 1st Elizabeth H. Woodall ....dau Martha J. Queen (b. ca 1835 GA) ....son John W. Queen (b. ca 1838 GA) ....many other children, but key point is that was in GA for 1835 birth of Martha J. If this is the same man, then he was in Macon, NC in 1832 (probably near Joseph) and in GA by 1835 (certainly near Joseph in 1840). Perfect timing for the break-up of the Queen clan in the Cullowhee area of NC around the time of death of William Lewis Queen, Sr.???? Gene
Reference Gayle's post: 12-25-1832 Macon Co, NC John Hall pays $8.20 regarding land on Which John Jones & Josiah Jones now live, adj. line of Robert Hall & land on which Hugh Queen now lives. Note: Josiah Jones, apparently the one who married Catherine Queen, was on 1830 Macon census next to James Queen, probable son of Samuel of 1776-1780. Note: 1830 Haywood census, Joseph Queen listed next to same Samuel. Note: 1840 Habersham Co., Ga census lists Joseph Queen (age 40<50) on pg 137 and a Hugh Queen (age 20<30) two names later on same page: Hugh Queen, age 20<30 Female, age 20<30 Male, age <5 (2 of 'em) Female, age <5 So, was this Hugh Queen in 1840 Ga. the same Hugh in 1832 Macon? Did Joseph have a son, Hugh? My notes do not reflect that either identified son of William Lewis Queen, Sr. had a child named Hugh. For your pondering. Gene
Pondering Carol's post and certain data a bit deeper forces me to share the following observations for consideration: James H. Queen who married Isabella Bryson was born in 1808. William Lewis Queen, Jr. had a son James Smith Queen (b. 1819) m. Kizzie Haynes (the Haynes name again). Thus, I rule out James H. as being son of William Lewis, Jr. for this reason if not for the other reasons previously stated. I have no record of William Lewis Queen, Sr. naming a son Samuel. Yet in the early 1830's there William Sr. was in Macon, his son Joseph in Macon, his daughter Catherine Jones (wife of Josiah) probably in Macon....and perhaps a stone's throw across the county line was Samuel Queen of 1776-1780 in Haywood and another Samuel Queen of 1759 (son of old William) in the Caney Fork area of Haywood. Nope, I'm not implying that Samuel of 1776-80 was a son of William Sr. I certainly don't believe that he was a son of old William (the two Samuel problem if nothing else). Could the Samuel of 1776-80 have been the son of Samuel of 1759? Questions, questions, but I don't have the answers. Gene
Hi Carol and all, Very much appreciate Carol's response to the Macon Co observations. Two points of clarification/confusion? 1. Who was that William age 20<30 on 1830 Macon census? I neither agree nor disagree with assumptions as to the father of this William. What intrigues me most is that Samuel Patton Queen was reportedly born on 12-16-1833 in MACON Co. This is a key time frame for some Queen activity associated with a number of Queens. Other assumptions concerning William are these possibilities: Samuel Queen (age 70 on 1850 Rabun Co., GA census) m. Nancy ...son Hugh Queen (b. 1808-1811 NC) m. 1st Elizabeth H. Woodall ........dau Martha J. Queen (b. 1835 GA) ........son John W. Queen (b. 1838 GA) ...son William Queen (b. 1800-1803 m. 5-6-1824 Burke) m. Mary Ann Patton ........son Samuel Patton Queen (b. 12-16-1833 Macon) Please note that neither the link of Samuel Patton to this William nor the link of this William to Samuel are necessarily absolute. Neither can I forget that this Samuel aged 70 in 1850 Rabun fits the age of the Samuel who was in 1840 Habersham, Ga and 1830 Haywood Co., NC. Makes that Hugh, above, most interesting in light of Gayle's post of a Hugh in Macon in 1832/33 on land adjoining Josiah Jones. 2. The identity of the James Queen on 1830 Macon is fairly solid, although I'm always in the market for and digging for more evidence. The Cullowhee and Bryson Branch area of Macon were the early stomping grounds for James and Isabella Bryson Queen. Their first child and only daughter, (another Martha J.! ,my Alfred's first dau was also Martha J.!), was buried in the Cullowhee Baptist Church cemetery in 1848. A son of Samuel (b. ca 1776-1780) drops from the census listing of 1830 Haywood (probably on the Haywood Co side of the Cullowhee area) while a James Queen of the "proper" age appears in Macon County census of 1830 where his wife's folks lived. He had married on 10-17-1829. A few years later, on 2-3-1833, Mary Queen, a daughter of Samuel, marries Wm B. Morgan in Macon County. In the early 1830's William L. Queen shows up in Macon, reportedly living with son, Joseph (who was listed on 1830 Haywood census). It certainly appears to me that there was a gathering of the Queen clan in the Cullowhee/Webster area in the early 1830's for some reason. Another group of the folks were gathering in the Caney Fork area in the 1820's and early 1830's while Mary Queen Hemphill was in the Scotts Creek area. There's always room for doubt when dealing with circumstantial evidence; but for now, I'd take it to the bank that this James Queen was the man who married Isabella Bryson and that his father was the Samuel Queen of 1776-1780. I'm not asking others to accept it, only consider it. Thanks, Gene
The history of my GG Grandfather Jameson Queen is interesting. I'm attaching his family record. Although some records show his first wifes name to be Jones, family records show her name to be Jeffrey's. His second wife Annie is shown in the census to be an occupant of his house, family history indicates that Mary Jeffrey's was ill for several years before she died and I assume that Annie was brought in to tend to the family along with Mary Queen. The controversy is over the ancestry of Annie. Half of the family is convinced that her proper name was Annie Griffin (half breed Cherokee) and the rest deny that as a vicious 160 year old rumor. Her name in the census records is listed as Whisenhunt, a Swiss name and I guess the truth is somewhere in between. I show one additional child to the union of Jameson and Mary; Eugene Queen, dob unknown. No This is not a joke, we all suspected that Gene was a bit long in the tooth, but would have guessed ? Glad to see that Reiley, Gene and Mandy are still stirring the pot. Also assume that this is father of Samuel Patton > Queen who was born on 12-16-1833 in MACON Co.? Further, assume that the > oldest female is Mary Ann Patton, wife of William.) Please note that > there are differing assumptions concerning the ancestor of this William > Queen. > > Macon Co. Marriages: > Maxwell Queen and Sela Rose 12-20-1832 by H. G. Woodfin, Deputy Clerk > Wm. B. Morgan and Mary Queen 2-3-1833 by John Hall, Clerk > Jessey Sherrill and Margaret Queen 10-26-1833 > John Turner and Mary Queen 11-8-1834 > ******* I have spent today going over the posts of the last several days, plus what I have in my database. The William who is listed in the 1830 Macon Co. census (which is asked if he could be the son of Henson). I imagine it could be the son of Henson as he had a son William. However, that William I don't think could be the father of Samuel Patton Queen. Now, I am not sure where my data on Samuel Patton Queen came from, but I have that his father was Samuel Queen who had wife Nancy. I'm sure that came from somone on the list, so if you have info on Sam Patton Queen, please set us straight. Also, I am intrigued by the land deed dated 1832. According to that census (1830 Macon), Josiah Jones (as noted by Gene) lived next door to a James Queen. Now this ties into William Queen born 1716 in MD, son of Timothy MacQueen. As stated in Reiley's post, William's daughter Catherine married Josiah Jones in 1806. The James Queen living next door to the Jones's could be the son of William Lewis, Jr. (grandson of William 1716) who married Sarah Jones in 1802, except that that James would have been born about 1777 or so, so the age would be wrong although it would make good sense. It may also be the son of Thomas ( son of William 1716). And as Gene has suggested (which makes a good case for Samuel to be a son of William)that this could be the James Queen who was married to Isabella Bryson, and the son of Samuel. Virgina Jane Queen b. 1787 (grandaughter of William 1716) and daughter of William Lewis, Jr., married Joshua Hall. They had a son John Hall b. 1810 who could be the John on page 32. It "looks" like these folks are all "family" which, if this James is the son of Samuel, certainly could tie him to William of 1716. It appears the more info we find, the more confused I get! Carol
Hi! I'm looking for a John E. Queen, married to a Mahala or Mahalia Chandler in Cape Girardeau, MO in 1834. I can't find parents or anything on either one of them. This has been my "brick wall" for over a year. I know there were Chandlers living in that area of MO for many years. They are both buried in Rowen Cemetery in Makanda, IL. I also know of one son he had, Joh Marion Queen with Priscilla Queen, both died in 1916 within 3 days of each other and are buried in Stearns Cemetery somewhere in Southern IL, Perry or Jackson Co., I think. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. R Graf

Thanks for stirring the old research juices! Tinkering again with the Josiah Jones (b. ca 1780-90) and living beside James Queen in 1830 Macon. My tentative conclusion, perhaps inaccurate, is that the Josiah Jones who married Catherine Queen on 2-13-1806 in Rutherford Co. was the Josiah Jones of the 1830 Macon census and not the Josiah of the 1830 and 1840 Rutherford census. Reason: The Josiah of 1830/40 Rutherford would have been 6-16 yr of age at time of marriage; the Josiah of 1830 Macon would have been 16-26 yr of age. Concerns: Where were Josiah and Catherine in 1810 and 1820 and why were they (if true) living near James H. and Isabella Queen in 1830 Macon? Has anyone on this list researched the Josiah Jones family? Any listing of children and ages? Riley's info and/or that from others suggests possibility/probability that Joseph Queen married Ursula(Usley) Jones, dau of John Jones, and that Joseph Queen was in Macon County in early1830's and lived next door to Samuel Queen of ca 1776-1780 at the time of the 1830 Haywood census. Macon County was probably a stone's throw away from where Samuel and Joseph lived in 1830...or the census taker crossed the county line (Macon was established in 1828, if I recall correctly). The 1821 Rutherford Co. NC deed to Joseph Queen is very interesting, if this is the same Joseph who married Ursula Jones. (There was a Joseph Queen in Haywood in early 1820. Was it the same Joseph if he was living with his father, William, in Rutherford in 1810 and buying land in Rutherford in 1821??) Also intriguing is the info from Riley that Joshua Hall and Jane Queen were in Webster, NC area in 1829. This, potentially, puts the following folk in the Cullowhee/Webster area in 1829/1835: Samuel Queen (of 1776-1780), Joseph Queen, Jane Queen Hall, Catherine Queen Jones, Hugh Queen and William Lewis Queen, Sr.? If the Hugh Queen came from Rutherford, along with most of the others, I'm guessing that it is the Hugh born ca 1784-1794. Was this Hugh (Houston?) residing in Macon in 1832/33 and near James and Isabella Queen the source of the name Houston for Samuel Houston Queen born in 1838, son of James and Isabella? If so, why? What if, old Hugh of 1810 Rutherford and born prior to 1765 had the following sons: Samuel Queen (b. ca 1776-1780) probable father of James H of 1808 and Alfred of 1810 Hugh Queen (b. ca 1784-1794) Hugh Queen, Sr family of 1810 Rutherford still at home: Male b. prior to 1765 Female b. prior to 1765 Male b. 1784-1794 Female b. 1784-1794 (2 of 'em) Female b. 1794-1800) (3 of 'em) Male b. 1800-1810 (2 of 'em) Hugh Queen (Jr) family of 1810 Rutherford: Male b. 1784-1794 (guess is that he was born near 1784; wife & children ages) Female b. 1765-1784) Male b. 1800-1810 Female b. 1800-1810 Has anyone researched the Hugh Queen, Sr family of 1810 Rutherford? Any earlier listing anywhere on a Hugh Queen born prior to 1765? Will ponder some other postings later. Old info from Rutherford (have full census details on these if anyone needs them).
