These are 'great' for research because you can see how each county is formed and when. For the state of TN: 1790: Census availability: Federal census lost for all counties. (couties then were Washington, Sullivan, Greene, Hawkins, Sumner, Davidson, and Tennessee) TN became a state in 1796. 1800: Census availability: Federal census lost for all counties. (couties then were Carter, Washington, Sullivan, Hawkins, Grainger, Knox, Jefferson, Cocke, Sevier, Blount, Greene, Smith, Wilson, Williamson, Davidson, Sumner, Robertson and Montgomery) 1810: Census availability: Federal census lost for all counties except Rutherford (shown as "extant" on map) and some of Grainger. (couties then were: if you want these counties email me) 1820: Census availability: Federal census lost for all counties of the marshal's dist. of East TN: Anderson, Bledsoe, Blount, Campbell, Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamilton, Hawkins, Jefferson, Knox, McMinn, Marion, Monroe, Morgan, Rhea, Sevier, Sullivan, and Washington. (couties then were: if you want these counties email me) 1830: Census availability: Federal census extant for all counties Now something else to consider when researching TN. This is copied directly from this book: The TN-KY boundary, intended to be 36(l) 30(l), was run too far north in 1779-1780 by VA surveyors. KY finally accepted this erroneous Walker Line in early 1820, but signicant parts of the boundary remained uncertain until a reservey completed in 1859. Some settlers in the diputed strip were uncertain in which state they lived, though TN exercised jurisdiction over much more of the strip than KY ever did. By contrast, the TN-KY line west of the TN River was surveyed in 1819 essentially on 36(l) 30(l). This would affect counties Claiborne, Campbell, Overton, Jackson, Sumner, Robertson, Montgomery, and Stewart. (in 1800 Smith, in 1790 Tennessee County) Notes for the beginning of TN: The Territory South of the OH River, popularly called the Southwest Territory, was created in May 1790. By direction of the territorial governor, militia captains took a census in July 1791. The county lines were unchanged from 1790. Tennessee county's name was dropped after its division into Montgomery and Robertson in 1796. This is probably why we can't find anything on some of these earlier Queen's. Just thought this might help. Mandy
I went to the archived list and found that Gene had actually answered my Thomas Queen letter. So it did make it to the list and with an answer. Didn't get a copy of either and I made sure I was subscribed so.............. you all may want to check the archived list while they are doing maintenance on this list. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/queen Mandy
The Isabella Bryson (b. 3-7-1812), who DID on 10-17-1829 marry James H. Queen (b. 10-10-1808), is believed, by all the Brysons with whom I've communicated, to have been the daughter of John W. Bryson (b. between 1768-1769 in 96 Dist, SC and died in Macon Co, NC on 7-23-1851. Isabella was the daughter of his second marriage...Jane Poston. James Holmes Bryson and Sarah Countryman Bryson are reported to have been Isabella Bryson Queen's grandparents. It appears to me the Queens I am looking for, went from NC to Indiana via TN and/or KY *Hannah Williams parents were Allen and Jane (Woodward) Williams. Allen & Jane married in 1794 in Jefferson Co, TN. This family were Quakers. Hannah's mother died in TN abt 1802, after which thr family moved to Overton Co, Tennessee, before going to Wayne County, Indiana, and from there to Bartholomew County, Indiana. *Hampton & Hannah were married in Wayne Co, Ind - 1820 *From a letter from a family member ".... told her about Hampton's activities against slavery. His home in Indiana and maybe in Madison County, Iowa, was a halfway house for the underground. I was told several stories about him driving escaped slaves under hayloads into Michigan from Indiana." I have no further information on Hampton between ~1796 - 1820, after that I can document his line until his death, 1855 in Iowa. Where he was for the first 24 yrs of his life and to which line of Queen he comes from is my great mystery. I have my suppositions on this family line, if I base it only on the names of Hampton & Hannah's children: Hogan, John, Alfred, William H., Phebe, James, Lucy Jane, Sarah Ann, and Zilpha G., but I would like to confirm this family line. **************************** (UNCONFIRMED) from another Queen researcher on this line Hampton's father is John Queen b. 1774 Montgomery Co, NC d. 1850-60 married Lucy __________ Hampton's Grandfather is Henson Queen b. 17__ d. ~1823 Rutherford Co Wife: Sarah Hampton ************************** Queen Misc. While you are researching the Queens of TN....could you keep an eye out for any reference to my elusive Hampton Queen? Hampton is reported to be born abt 1796 in Rutherford Co, NC. I then find he married Hannah Williams in May, 1820 in Indiana. The Tennessee connection is that Hannah was born TN abt 1800 living in TN with her Quaker parents. It is possible that Hampton also lived in TN for awhile. Other UNCONFIRMED information: his father may be John. Hampton may have 6 siblings to include a Henson, James and John.

Hi, I spent some time at the library today. I did not have access to 1850 census records, the book was at the binders. My great-great-great-grandmother, Miriam Rowland, was born in Rutherford Co NC in 1780. She married Ransom Powell in the same county in the year 1797. Ransom died (c1830?) and in his 1836 will Miriam's father, Thomas Rowland of Greenville District SC, refers to her as "Mira Queen". Her tombstone (in Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery, White County, GA) identifies her as Miriam Powell, daughter of Thomas Rowland. Thomas had been dead since 1836. Do any of you Queen researchers know of a Queen who married a widow named Miriam Rowland Powell? The marriage would probably have taken place in Rutherford County, NC or Habersham County, GA, in the early 1830s. Thanks for any information at all. Lily Mullinax
Hi Mandy and all, Just a note that the 1800 Rutherford Co census was alphabetized...these folks weren't necessarily neighbors. In looking at pg 138 of the Rutherford census of 1800, I do not see a listing for a Thomas Queen. (Of course my eyes aren't what they once were). The others are in exactly the order you give with age ranges as given. Approx birth range of John Queen's Rutherford listing: Male, b. ca 1774-1784 Female, b. ca 1774-1784 Male, b <1790 Female, b <1790 (2 of 'em) Translation (correct, I hope) of the 1800 SC info: John Queen, Pendleton Dist Male, b. prior to 1755 Female, b. prior to 1755 Female, b. ca 1774-1784 Male, b. ca 1784-1790 (2) Female, b. ca 1784-1790 Female, b. < 1790 (2 of 'em) Thomas Queen, Union Dist Male, b. ca 1755-1774 Female, b. ca 1755-1774 Male, b. ca 1774-1784 Male, <10 (2) Female, <10 (2) Gene MndyQn@aol.com wrote: > Question real quick: > If Old Wm Queen was in Rutherford Co., NC in 1800 and near him were: > (info per Reiley) > John 16-26 > Wm 45+ wf 45+ > Samul 26-45 > Wm 45+ wf 26-45 > Meredith 16-26 > Timothy 45+ > Timothy Jr 26-45 > Thomas b. 1745 (who had a son John b. 1774) > > And then in SC: > 1800: > Queen, John State : SC : Pendleton Dist. : 02001-2110100 > Queen, Thomas State : SC : Union Dist. : 20110-2001000 > > Thomas in SC is said to be Old Wm's son.
