    1. [QUEEN] Introduction
    2. Lee Lamar
    3. Hi, I am one of those that just listen in and rarely says anything. Mandy Queen says to check in and tell who we are. I am Lee L. My mother Nannie Mae Queen came to Missouri from Haywood County, NC in 1902, when she was 16 years of age along with her entire family. Her parents were William Nathan Queen, b. 1881 and Mary Lucinda Burnett, b. 1866, both born near Pigeon River in Haywood County. The father of William Nathan Queen was Nathan or Nathaniel S. Queen, b.1826 and Martha Jane Rhodes, b 1829. Both are believed to have been born in Haywood County as it was constituted in the years before 1850, which then included what is now Jackson County. Nathan S. Queen was one of the Confederate soldiers that were surrendered at Cumberland Gap during the Civil War, and sent to Camp Douglas as a POW. He was in such poor condition that he did not survive the trip home. He did manage to get almost home to his native Haywood County, NC, making it to Greene County, TN, just across the border, when he became too sick and his friends had to leave him there. Martha Jane got there after he had died. (As a POW during World War II, I have been particularly interested in this story). I do not know for sure who the father of Nathan S. might be, but have my beliefs. I would appreciate anyone reading this if they would make any comments for or against. Since some one said they wanted to try to tie all the Haywood County Queens together, maybe this information will help. Maybe I will obtain some good information in the process. Nathan S. Queen, b. 1826, was the bondsman for Robert Henry Queen, b. 1832, when he married Nancy Franklin in 1853, in Haywood Co. This would strongly suggest that they were probably brothers. Where would two brothers fit into a Queen family. The only place I can find that seems to fit and be logical is as sons of William B. Queen, b. 1796 and Mary Nicholson, b. about 1797. This would give us: William B. Queen, md. to Mary Nicholson Lucinda Queen, b. 1818 Known Americus H. Queen, b. 1820 Known Nathan S. Queen, b. 1826 (????) Rev. Benjamin Nicholson Queen, b.1831 Known Robert Henry Queen, b. 1832 (????) Dicey Queen, b.1834 Known Hannah Queen, b. 1837 Known It appears to me that Nathan S. and Robert Henry Queen may have moved over the mountain into the area that remained in Haywood when Jackson County was formed, and thus few records that would be available to confirm this. Does anyone know anything that might indicate this is incorrect, or hopefully that would confirm it? Thanks, Lee L.

    1. [QUEEN] Burke County, NC
    2. Jerry Dyer
    3. Hi Group, The following article contained some info which some of the QUEEN-L members probably could use. If nothing else, for background. The text is copied verbatim from "Heritage of Burke County," 1981, copyright by Burke County Historical Society, published by Hunter Publishing Company, Winston-Salem, NC. Article was written by Mary YORK. She listed sources as: "Old deeds, census records, recollections of James Lafayette York, as told to the writer." Quote: In the early 1700's, three brothers; Henry, John, and Semore York came from Yorkshire England to America and settled in Randolph County, North Carolina. From these Yorks numerous families of Yorks originated and are now scattered throughout the United States. Henry York, believed to be the father of William R. YORK, lived and died on Sandy Creek in Randolph County. William R. York migrated to the South Mountains from Randolph County and settled in the vicinity of Ward's Gap, which at that time was part of Rutherford County. He was given a land grant for a large boundary of land, including the land where Mt. Gilead Baptist Church is now located. Some of this land he gave to his daughter Sophronia wo was married to Soloman Queen. Records show Sophronia York Queen and Soloman Queen gave forty acres of this land to establish a church and burial ground. Soloman Queen and wife Sophronia York Queen are buried in a small plot across the road from where Mt. Gilead Church is now located. William York later moved farther back in the South Mountains on Jacobs Fork River, and lived under a huge rock called the "Bill Snicker Rock" until he could build a cabin which he built beside a small stream near the rock, and near Jacob's Fork River. he later built a larger cabin across the river on the "Red Hill." He fished, hunted, trapped to feed his family and was also a farmer. Most of the Yorks engaged in farming. He bought and was granted several large tracts of land including the land where the Wildlife Campground is located as well as a large part of the land which now belongs to the South Mountain State park. In his lifetime he bought and was granted around three thousand acres of land in the South Mountains of Burke and Rutherford Counties. William R. York was married twice. The first marriage was to MARY ANN DEAL. To this union the following children were born: John, who returned from the Civil War; William, a Civil War Soldier; Abner, Sarah Elena York, who married John York; Mary Ann, who married William Deal (Dale); Nancy, who married Andrew York; and Dicey, who married Henry Deal (Dale). William R. York's second marriage was to Catherine Smith. To this union the following children were born: James R. who married Fanny Huffman; William Riley, who married Margaret Lowman; Livi Jackson, who married Sarah Huffman; Louisa, who married Billy ----; Sophronia, who married Soloman Queen; and a daughter (name unknown). William R. York died in 1832 and was buried in the York Cemetery on "Red Hill" in the South Mountains of Burke County, North Carolina. Unquote. (The article is #774, page 480 of the above noted book). Mary York wrote three additional articles - James R. York, James Lafayette York, and Waightstill Avery York.. If anyone is interested, please contact me. More on Burke County, NC Queens in the future. Regards, Jerry.

    3. Gene, Now this John Watt Houpt is my ancestor. His wife, Margaret Correll was born in NC. They married in Wilkes Co. NC. They moved to IND around 1834. According to my records I believe that Margaret died in Greysville - Sullivan Co. IND. around 1856. John Watt Houpt went on to Rooks Co. Kansas where he supposedly died. 3. Mandy, You are right, I have been trying to figure who Johnson Queen of IND is. He was listed as you show as being 32 in the 1850 IND census. I'll have to recheck the 1860 Missouri census -- because I find him and Arcunetti(sp) in Harrison Co. with the same kids. I had written down that he is now 63 and wife is 39. Something is wrong here. This Mary Correll is the daughter of Francis Queen. Samuel and his wife Mary followed their daughter and son-in-law, John Watt Houpt to IND. Does anyone have a Ruben that matches this Ruben's age?? 2. O Eugene Queen
    3. Hi All, Thanks to Mandy for her 1850 Sullivan Co, IN posting! If my math is still holding up, the age of Samuel Carell (Correll?)'s wife, Mary, on that census would be a close match to Mary, probable sister to James Queen who married Zilpah Hogan....and who was also the dau of Francis? So, I'm thinking along the line of Mandy. Further, Sarah Ann's birth in NC would have been ca 1824, thus Samuel and Mary would have left NC after 1824. As always, I have a real question. According to info that I've stolen from someone..or that someone was kind enough to share....Mary's daughter, Margaret Correll was born on 12-9-1813 and married a John Watt Haupt. Does anyone on the list know in what state/county Margaret Queen Correll was born.....and where she died? Did she make the trek out West with her family, if that's them? Thanks, Gene

    1. [QUEEN] Important mess. fr Listowner
    2. Listmembers, I know that we are all seeking the same goal. To find and share information about our Queen ancestors. I've never had to intervene on any subject on this list and hope that I never will be required to. This is such a wonderful group of folks! I've enjoyed being the listowner and don't consider it work at all! Please let's respect each other and the opinions of others on this list. As listowner, I won't tolerate flaming. Bottom line. Matters that are in disagreement should be taken up one on one and not on this list. This list is not about North or South, Confederate or Union, Black or White, etc. It's about sharing information about any Queen by surname. Please don't see this letter as a "slap on the hand". See it as a gentle reminder from the listowner. We've started 2001 in a wonderful way! We've had 208 messages for the month of Jan. alone!!!! That next letter may just be about your Great Grandfather/Grandmother! We all want to hear from everyone on the list and share all our information. There are actually 118 people on this list and we only hear from a few. Maybe now is a good time for everyone to introduce themselves. Let us see who you are and who you're searching for! Below are the guidelines as posted on rootsweb. Please review them and familiarize yourself with each one. Any questions please don't hesitate to write me personally. My name is Mandy Queen and my email is MndyQn@aol.com. You all know that I'm very lenient on these matters but again, I won't tolerate flaming. Sincerely, Mandy Queen, listowner Guidelines for mailing lists: 1. Do not send spam e-mail messages to mailing lists. 2. Do not send attachments (attached files) of any sort to mailing lists. 3. Well, Gene and Don wanted to liven this Mail List, and they've gotten their wish. I didn't see the earlier message, reminding us all that this is a list with lots of different viewpoints, as a request for an apology, but as a reminder that we are a diverse group, and that what stirs pride for some may symbolize something negative for others. My roots are in the South, and I have lots of ancestors on BOTH sides of the Civil War, and I am proud of my heritage. This isn't about bashing the South. Personally I urge the list members to respect the feelings of others, particularly those who have differing points of view. Restraint will serve our List well; flame wars will not. 3. I'd like to remind people that this is not strictly a Southern mailing list. Although the great number of postings here track Southern Queens, the name is more widespread across the U.S., as is exemplified by my own Massachusetts ancestors. The assumption by some of the recent postings that I would be elated by the flying of a Confederate flag in my home state of Maryland is offensive. 1. [QUEEN] Point Lookout Victory
    2. Charlton Queen
    3. More on the Point Lookout situation for those who are interested in the cause for which many QUEENS fought (and continue to fight) for. ------------------------------- Today, Federal District Court Judge William M. Nickerson ruled in favor of Plaintiff's motion for a Preliminary Injunction and struck a blow against political correctness for all those who enjoy flying Confederate flags over the graves of their ancestors at Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery. In a sweeping decision demonstrating vindication for people with "Confederate Rights", Judege Nickerson basically and categorically handed the Veteran's Administration and the Justice Department a pronounced and stunning defeat by dismantling all of the governments faulty notions, weak arguments, misperceptions, and intimidation. In a word, previous actions by the Veteran's Administration and its employees which prevented flying the Confederate Battle Flag at Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery are "UNCONSTITUTIONAL". Judge Nickerson related that the Veteran's Administration interpretation of its flag manual policy was insonsistant with the court's view and that "Plaintiff's speech is protected speech occurring in the context of a non-public forum and that Defendant's reasons for excluding the speech fail to satisfy either the reasonableness or view-point neutrality requirements. Accordingly' Plaintiff's request for Declaratory and Injunctive Relief will be granted." Further, "The form of relief granted is that Plaintiff shall be permitted to display, on a daily basis between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., a full-sized, historically accurate Confederate battle flag from its own pole at Point Lookout. The pole shall be at least three feet lower than the U.S. flagpole at Point Lookout. The placement of the flag is to be agreed upon by the parties but in close proximity to either the Federal or State monument. Plaintiff is to provide all material and labor necessary for the daily placement and removal of the flag. A sign shall be erected at the base of the flagpole clearly indicating that the flag is provided by a private party or parties." In his opinion, Judge Nickerson tells the public what we've known all along in the context of Point Lookout, a cemetery established for the sole purpose of honoring Confederate dead, the only rational assumption is that the flag is being displayed because it is the flag under which those buried at Point Lookout fought and died. Fellow supporters, we have a huge Confederate Victory for our ancestors and their good names as a result of Judge Nickerson's ruling. The VA has thirty days to decide if they wish to appleal.
