    3. Gene, Well you have mangaed to offer me a challenge that I cannot refuse. I do know that there are documented individuals ranging from age 9 to 68 who saw service in the War of Northern Agression. I will see what I can discover about your Alfred. Be back as soon as I have something to report. 3. Perhaps the answer to this question will help me to understand why John Henderson Queen who was imprisoned in Ohio was sent all the way to Maryland to take the oath to be set free. I have the paperwork from Point Lookout , but I've never found any record of his being imprisoned there. I wonder what the actual procedures were at the end of the War ? How could Alfred have been "paroled " in a town in the middle of N.C. ? Why would prisoners be moved across the country just to be sent home ? And - what does "paroled" mean ? My GGrandfather was not "paroled" I think the paperwork said he was released after swearing allegiance, I'll find the forms and check back Don ----- Original Message ----- From: "O Eugene Queen" <EQueen@Lexcominc.net> To: <QUEEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, February 16, 2001 10:19 AM Subject: [QUEEN] Prisoners of War > Thanks to all who have responded concerning age of service of Southern > men during Civil War. 3. Gene: Your question is one my cousin and I have gone round and round on. We can't find a grgrgrandfather and what happened to him. He was on the 1860 census and gone from 1870. (family was there without him) I say he probably died in the Civil War and she says he was too old. Born ca 1817. Then I found out that another grgrgrandfather, b. ca 1819 not only fought but was captured by Sherman. He was very deaf and didn't hear the call to retreat! No, I don't think 50 would be too old to fight in the Civil War. My husband is 48 and I'd hate to be on the opposite side of him in a war! If he ran out of cannon balls, he'd probably pick the cannon up and throw at you! 1. [QUEEN] Repeating names
    2. Carol Queen
    3. Hi All, I just finished reading the sequel to Gone With The Wind (Scarlett) and I noticed that names in both of those books are names we keep finding in the Queen family. So, I decided to look up some "repeating" names and see if maybe, instead of these kids being named after their mom's surname, they are being named after famous people. And then they pass that name on down. Here are a few I found in my not too expansive encyclopedia. Carol Wade Hampton-1818-1902 A United States politician and Confederate army office. His election as governor of South Carolina in 1876 ended Republican Reconstruction rule in the state. Hampton was born in Charleston, SC. He bore THE SAME NAME as that of his grandfather, a general in THE WAR OF 1812, and his father, a wealthy planter. You can look up more info on him in the encyclopedia. So there is one possibility for the Hampton name from 1812 on. However, Hampton was a common surname also. Alexander Hamilton-1755-1804 A United State patriot and statesman. Possibly giving rise to a number of kids named Hamilton. Richard Henderson-1735-1785 An American land promoter and judge. In 1774 he founded the Transylvania company and bought the land between Kentucky & Cumberland rivers (much of the state of Kentucky), from the Cherokee Indians. He hired Daniel Boone in 1775 to cross the Cumberland Gap and establish the first settlement on the acquired land. Henderson was born in Hanover county, Virginia and grew up in North Carolina. He became a lawyer and was appointed a judge in 1768. 1. [QUEEN] Moses Queen and Descendants
    2. O Eugene Queen
    3. Hi all, Jerry's been beating the bullrushes and coming up with some good stuff. Most of the following has previously been posted, but it's time for me to summarize a bit. Be forewarned that my interpretation of handwriting is often lousy. First, a Question: Where was Moses Queen prior to 1810 Burke Co., NC? 1810 Burke County, NC census pg 131 Moses Queen Male 26<45 (= b. ca 1765-1784) Female 26<45 Male <10 (2 of 'em) (= b. ca 1800-1810) Female <10 John Mcfalls listed next door and Richard Queen listed 2 houses away (who was Richard?) Female 45+ Female 16<26 Male 10<16 (4 of 'em) Female 10<16 Female <10 (3 of 'em) John Wisenhunt listed 9 houses from Moses. Only female in John's household was age 26<45. John apparently the same age. 1820 Burke Co., NC, pg 109 (There is a Joshua Hall on an earlier page) Moses Queen Male 45+ (= born before 1775) Female 45+ Male 16<26 (=b. ca 1794-1804) (I suggest Solomon) Male 10<16 (= b. ca 1804-1810) (Could be Tobias. If born 1804=23 in 1827) Female 10<16 Male <10 (2) (= b. ca 1810-1820) Female <10 A William York lived 3 houses away. William was 45+ ......Now, insert Jerry Dyer's 3-2-1827 Burke County survey of 100 acres for a Tobias Queen...the land adjoining a Moses Queen; with chainbearers (?) an Adam Swink and an Elijah Roper. (A James Roper lived next door to Moses in 1830.) 1830 Burke, pg 137 Moses Queen Male 50<60 (= b. ca 1770-1780)(Zeroes in on 3 census to b. ca 1770-1775) Female 50<60 Male 20<30 (2 of 'em) (= b. ca 1800-1810) (I suggest Solomon and Tobias) Male 15<20 Female 15<20 Male 10<15 Female 10<15 Listed 2 houses away is William York, age 60<70 Listed 12 houses away is Riley York, age 20<30 1840 Burke, pg 350 Sol Queen Male 30<40 (= b. ca 1800-1810) Female 15<20 (= b. ca 1820-1825) Male <5 Next door is Riley York, age 20<30 (apparently not the same as the one above unless the Riley of 1840 was one of the younger males in the 1830 HH). 1840 Burke, pg 365 Moses Queen 70<80 (= b. ca 1760-1770) (This & above nails him as b. ca 1770) Female 70<80 .....But, where are the children from 1830? Son, Solomon, is listed above...but two grown boys missing. One is probably Tobias. Where did they go between 1830-1840 and where are they in 1840? Solomon later names sons, Andy and Pinkney....did he name one of these after a brother? Does an Andy or Pinkney of the right age show up with Tobias anywhere in 1840? 1850 Burke, pg 352 Solomon Queen, age 46 (= b. ca 1804) Saphronia, 30 Moses, 10 Solamon, 6 Tobias, 2 ....Now, insert Jerry Dyer's post of 1-27-1855 land for Solomon Queen, adjoining his own land. (Solomon's 1850 R.E. value was $310) 1860 Burke, pg 819-820 Solomon Queen, 58 (= b. ca 1802) (R.E. value now up to $800, see above) Fanny, 45 Moses, 18 Solomon, 14 Tobias, 12 Andy M., 11 Sarah, 8 Pinkney, 3 Nancy, 4/12 1870 Burke, pg 337 Soloman Queen, 67 (= b. ca 1803) Phanne (?), 49 Jonas, 24 Tobias, 21 Andey McD, 17 Sarah E., 15 Pinkney, 12 Malinda, 11 Lettie, 5 ......Now, let's have some of these folks grow up and move to Georgia or elsewhere. Who has the ball? Coming next....perhaps tomorrow...the trail of the Burke County Tallents. I'll key in lots of Tallent census data, but will need help with the analysis of who's WHO! But, they're all around the Queens. Gene

    3. Hi Group- As promised, another land survey with some interesting information. Burke County, NC Grant # 6361, 22 Sept 1855 By virtue of a warrant No. 16381, entered 27th of January 1855, I have laid off and surveyed for Solomon Queen forty-nine acres of land on the waters of Mountain Creek, joining his own land, beginning on a chesnut his corner and then North 42 degrees East eighty eight poles to a white Oak then South 33 degrees East one hundred poles to a Pine then South (61) degrees West one hundred and sixteen poles to a (unreadable word) white oak on a branch, then to the beginning. Surveyed 20 April 1855. Moses Queen} John R. Sudderth, C.S. Aaron Tallant} C.B. end (Will be calling this Moses Queen - 'the elder' to distinguish him from my Moses Queen, b. 1828, d. 1894 - Union County, GA.) Now, we all remember the James C. Queen, Moses Queen, and Nathan Jenkins who were named admins for Jesse Tallant's estate in Union County, Georgia in the 1870's. Names, names, names. Again, if anyone has any ideas about Moses Queen the elder, or Tobias Queen pair, let us know. Regards, Jerry.

    3. Hi Group! Interesting week for Burke County discoveries! H/W one of the most interesting: >From a survey posted in Burke County, NC- Quote: North Carolina, Burke County- By virtue of a warrant No. 9211 entered the 2nd of March 1827 - surveyed for TOBIAS QUEEN - one hundred acres of land on both sides of Mountain Creek and adjoining and running around three sides of the place where MOSES QUEEN now lives - beginning on a post oak on a ridge on or near the Rutherford line and on the west side of a path and runs No 50 degrees east one hundred & twenty poles to a white oak Queens old corner then South 41 degrees east with his line crossing the creek, one hundred twenty-eight poles to a stake at his corner then No 41 degrees E. with his line sisty four poles to a chesnut his corner then no with a line 41 degrees West one hundred & twenty eight poles crossing the creek to a large pine, then No 41 degrees East thirty four poles to a pine on the line of Queens other survey, then south with a line 50 degrees East twenty-eight poles crossing the creek to a white oak, then south 41 degrees east fifty poles to a stake, then S. 41 degrees west fouty-four poles to a stake then S. 41 degrees east eighty poles to a stake then South 41 degrees West one undred & eight poles to a stake then North 72 degrees west one hundred & eighty poles to the beginning - Surveyed 5th Oct 1827. Adam Swink} ? Sudderth,} C.S. Elijah Roper } C.B. End quote: Swink and Roper were chain bearers, Sudderth must have been the county surveyer. Important here to note that Tobias Queen bought land surrounding Moses Queen. Furthermore, the time frame dictates Tobias Queen is of age to buy a homestead (for his family?). Analysis welcome as to who, etc. If you wish, another of these will arrive shortly! Regards, Jerry.

    3. Lee et al: This is very curious. My roadblock has been Hence (Henson?) and Nancy York Queen who I have found in 1850 Rabun County Ga, and then Nancy widowed in 1860, 1870 Cherokee County NC. By 1880 I think she and her children had moved to Clay County right next door. I have heard of this Robert Husley Queen before, and was in contact with a fellow researcher from this line some years ago. I'll look through my files and see if I can find those notes. My Hence and Nancy are somehow connected to George Washington Queen who's father was Stephen Queen, I believe. I have wondered if the Stephen Queen and my Hence were brothers. I have also wondered if the Nathaniel S. Queen might possibly have been Stephen, although other searchers have supposed Samuel.. And while we are wondering, where are the descendants of Hence and Nancy York Queen's children. Of the 5 (3 sons, 2 daughters) I have only made connections with one or two from the youngest son, Hinsey Jonas, my ggrandfather. So many mysteries, so few clues! Rita Queen Bartmess
