His wife, Laura [QUEEN], was born in North Carolina in 1817. In 1850, the Garner family was living in what was then McNairy co, TN. They lived in the northwest part of this county and this particular section became part of Chester co when it was formed in 1875. In 1850, the children of the Garner family were: Mary Ann, 1835; Henry, 1837, Calaway, 1838; Sarah, 1840; Noah Z., 1842; Laticia, 1843; George, 1845; Elizabeth, 1846; and Reubin 1848. All of these children were born in Tennessee. There is no evidence that Noah and Laura Garner ever came to Greene co, however it is known that at least some of the children came. Noah Garner Sr. is buried at the Cave Spring cemetery in Chester co, TN and his tombstone shows dates of Oct. 25, 1813 and June 25, 1889. The stone for his wife, Laura, shows dates of Jan. 12, 1817 and May 22, 1875. Other members of the Garner family are also buried at Cave Spring cemetery. Any information on John Winston Verner, b. N.C., married Cindy Satterfield, in 1880 Polk Co. Census ; Abner Chastain who married America QUEEN before 1870, and William Humphreys, married to Charity McDaniel, in 1880 Polk co. She married James Madison Cox on 1 Nov. 1877 in Montgomery Co., NC. 19. Syndia L.3 Locklear QUEEN 'Sidney' (John (Henry?)2, Major Lovett1) was born in Franklin County, Illinois circa 1836. She married Samuel QUEEN circa 1848 in Possibly Scott County,Arkansas. Samuel was born circa 1820 in Carroll County, Tennessee. * * * Year 1840 U.S. Census; Williamson County, Illinois; Age 4 years. Year 1850 U.S. Census; Scott County, Arkansas; Age 14. Possibly married Samuel QUEEN in Scott County, Arkansas: Courthouse burned: Records lost forever: Listed as Cyndia in Scott County, Arkansas, we could not imagine how to pronouce the name. She had a sister Cynthia. I had found a Samuel QUEEN on the Hill County census nearby Eliza Locklear, the year 1860. Birth date and Illinois made me keep it in our files. He had a wife "Sidney". Many months after finding this. J.R. finds an add in a book. A lady in Midland looking for John Locklear and Burcham families of Hill County, Texas 1860. A phone call anxiously placed did indeed come up with a listing for Dessie Knox. She had placed the add 1977, and had long since given up on any response. She knew somehow the two families were connected. She had a page from an aunt's journal, written many years ago, Locklears had a daughter named Sidna. Sidney married Samuel QUEEN. Several children were listed with her, and so now we are diggin' for QUEEN information. We need to find this family in 1870. 1880. 1900. 1910. Lots of things to find yet. Year 1996, I hear that one Sidney was married to a Smith and then a Morrow. She quite possibly is buried nearby Marble Falls or thereabouts. I am going to pursue this also. Much to dig on our history yet. Syndia L. Locklear QUEEN 'Sidney' and Samuel QUEEN had the following children: 86 i. Elizabeth J.4 QUEEN was born in Scott County, Arkansas circa 1850. 87 ii. Mary L. Sorry for being so late in responding to the call for all Queen-L subscribers to identify themselves and their line. Been out of town for an extended time and am just now ripping through several hundred e-mails. My name is James M. Grant. Maternal grandmother is Mandy Queen b. 1908(living), daughter of Joseph Wilburn Queen(1887-1973) and Martha Owen, JW "Wib"'s parents were Jeptha Queen (1845-1911)and Lucinda Bracken, Jeptha's parent's were Americus H. Queen (1820-1900) and Mary Parker, Americus' parents were William B. Queen(1796-1887) and Mary Nicholson, William's parents were Samuel Queen (1759-1842) and Dicey Rolls, Samuel's parents were William Queen(1716-1801) and Margaret Lewis. Recently I was looking for info on my gggrandfather Grant's 4 brothers who all served the Confederacy and came across the following info, name:Americus H. Queen, county enlisted:Jackson, NC, date of enlistment: 7 Feb 1864, rank:Corporal, enlisting unit: "B" Co., 25th NC Infantry no other info was listed. We know he survived the war because he died in 1900 Also listed was another Queen who had to be related because he was from Jackson County as well though I have no info on him other than what I saw. Name: John B. Queen, county enlisted: Jackson, NC:, date of enlistment:30 May 1861, age at enlistment: 25, rank: Private, enlisting unit: "B" Co., 25th NC Infantry It also states he was killed in battle at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 Jul 1862. Anybody have any info on who John B,'s family was? Thought this might be interesting since it is related to recent goings on here on the old Queen-L. Regards, James

Allright, anyone want to attempt and summarize and put families together? Here's my shot with the GA info first. Jesse Tallent of 1860 and 1870 Blairsville, GA was same as the 1850 Burke County, NC HH 263 on pg 352; ...and perhaps same as 1840 Burke, pg 365...which seems to list this Jessey as s (on) of Aaron. This would have had to be the Aaron pg 109 of 1820 Burke; pg 136 of 1830 Burke and page 364 of 1840 Burke. However, this Jesse is not in Aaron's HH of 1830...where was he? Now, back to 1820 Burke. Both Aaron Tallent and his wife are 45+ (I calculate them to be 50<60), thus there are grown children away from home somewhere. Later census (1840) suggests that Joshua is one of the grown and gone sons. Proximity to Moses Queen raises possibility of some intermarriages. Anyway, one of the boys still at home is Jesse (b. ca 1808) who later married Sada. 1830 Burke.... Old Aaron is still here, but Joshua has moved away. Where? Jesse of 1808 has left home. Where is he? .....Back to Jerry Dyer's info... 1827 survey for land joining Solomon Queen and Richard Tallent. Who is Richard and where is Richard in 1830? I'm guessing that Richard is the other son (b. ca 1804-1810) of Aaron Tallent. If true, then Joshua, Jesse and Richard have left Burke by 1830...or at least the area I've researched. Where are these three brothers? 1840 Burke... Joshua is back in Burke, living next door to his 70<80 yr old parents. A John Tallent, single at age 15<20, is living 6 houses away on the other side of Joshua. Joshua did not have a son by 1820, but since this John is 15<20 he could be a son of Joshua, so I'll tentatively plug him as such. Lots of other Tallent relatives nearby in 1840 and I'll stop here for now with my wild guessing. Comments....anyone? Gene

I know of one who served at that "advanced age" (which 51 was in the 1860s) in the Nitre and Mining Bureau of the Confederacy, mining saltpetre in dangerous underground caves, and mines. 1). Your candidate could have been a volunteer. 2). The conscription acts in the Confederacy: a). #1 on April 16, 1862 was for men 18 to 35. b). #2 September 27, 1862 raised the age to 45 and five (5) days later it was expanded. I doubt that conscription authorities were very particular about proof of birth. c). #3 February 1864 all men were called from age 17-50 (but could he prove he was overage?). Eventually, conscripts accounted for 1/4 to 1/3 of the Confederate armies east of the Mississippi between April 1864 and early 1865. You should consult J.W. Moore's "Roster of NC Troops in the War Between the States", 1882 and L.H. Manarin and W.T. Jordan's "North Carolina Troops" in eight volumes from 1966-____. Also, Broadfoot has published a multi-volume roster of all the Southern states and most of the Northern states. At least at Chancellorsville/Fredericksburg there is a computerized roster. Have you tried submitting name, rank, state of origin and company/regiment on the National Archives form for that purpose (see their Website)? Tell us more! Jim Tumblin, O.D. Hi all, Thanks to all who responded concerning my CW questions, I worked the internet last night and the library today. Yes, there was an 8th Regt. Charlton, the Henry Thomas Jefferson Ludwig, was apparently the H.T.J Ludwig whose 4-26-1900 history of the 8th was recorded by him in Mt. Pleasant, NC. He was the drummer for company H and his story is recorded in the "Histories of the Several Regiments and Battalions From North Carolina in the Great War 1861-65"; Vol I; edited by Walter Clark and published by our state in 1901. The "Roster of North Carolina Troops in the War Between the States"; Vol I, by John W. Moore, 1882 purportedly lists the members of the 8th Regiment, including Company C of which Alfred was reportedly paroled. However, Moore catches some flak from later writers who conclude that his work was inadequate. Apparently Moore was the first to compile rosters of troops and didn't have accurate or complete information. (He did not include my Alfred Queen or J.A. Hall, either.) However...."North Carolina Troops 1861-1865 A Roster"; Vol. IV Infantry; compiled by Weymouth T. Jordan, Jr. does list in Company C of the 8th "Queen, Alfred, Private. Paroled at Morganton on May 25, 1865. No further records." He also lists "Hall, J. A., Private, Paroled at Morganton on May 29, 1865. No further records." The 8th was an eastern, and I do mean Eastern, NC Regiment. How did Queen and Hall link up with that group is unknown to me, but a number of possibilities exist since the 8th saw action or station down East, up in VA, in S.C. and GA. Hoke's DIVISION was in Randolph County when General Johnston negotiated for the surrender of his ARMY and it was on April 26, 1865 that the army was surrendered. On May 2, 1865, the REGIMENT, "about 150 men strong", was paroled. So, why was Queen paroled on May 25th at Morganton and Hall was paroled in Morganton on May 29th? I don't know. However, an 1861-65 map of N. C. reflects a railroad line (Western North Carolina R.R.) into Morganton. The line came through Davidson County and nearly touched the northwest corner of Randolph County. (A southern line, the Wilmington Charlotte and Rutherdfordton came into Rutherford County.) Could it be that a large number (see above) of troops were moving out of Randolph County in May and that some were moved out by train, then paroled at their final destination? Or did Queen and Hall walk to Morganton...Queen in more of a hurry to get home..., then report to some official in Morganton for their parole? And...who was the J. A. Hall? Anyone know if the James A. Hall (son of Joshua Hall, Jr. and Virginia Jane Queen Hall) served in the confederate army? James was born in 1818. James Hall was married to Jancy (Nancy?) Clements. I have no reason to believe that Alfred Queen served early in the war (children's DOB). Could it be that he and James Hall joined late in the war and were sent East where needed at the time the end was drawing near? Perhaps they went East out of Morganton by train? Okay, on to other matters. Gene
Hi all, I received a question about who this David Queen was. I went back in the archives and found this very good biography of this Queen family. I have placed this Francis (father of David), POSSIBLY erroneously, as the "missing" son of William Queen b. 1716 & Margaret Lewis. There is no PROOF that he is William's son, but, in my own sifting and sorting he seemed to fit very nicely. As always, if you find error in this outline, please straighten me out. There are no QUEEN wills recorded in the will books, of Rowan from 1753 through 1805. Iredell County was created from Rowan in 1788. This is signed by James Queen. (Francis Queen has died by this time as will be shown later in this report). DB E, pg 647, 18 Dec 1797, NC granted James Queen 50 ac N fork Rocky Creek above his other land. DB H, p 319, 28 Dec 1812, James Queen of CLAYBORN COUNTY, TN, appointed my BROTHER, JOSEPH QUEEN of Iredell County to sell 50 ac land Rocky Creek, etc. Signed James Queen. DB H, p 424, 425, 22 Dec 1812, James Queen, of Clayburn County, TN, to Margaret Queen of Iredell County for $100, 100 ac land on waters Rocky Creek which was conveyed to James Queen by the last will & testament of Francis Queen, deceased, in words as follows: "I also give to my beloved son, James Queen, 100 ac land adjoining his own tract of land". Signed James Queen, with Joseph Queen as a witness. In the Iredell Co. Court of P & QS Minutes (1789-1834) microfilm C.o54.30001, pg 524, 3rd Monday may 1803, the last will & testament of Francis Queen was duly proven by Joseph Millsaps and James McHaegue. The court appointed Joseph & Margaret Queen administrators to the will annexed who were qualified accordingly. (a search in index of wills of Iredell county does not list this will, nor does a page by page search of the will book in which it would have been recorded reveal this will, which is unfortunate. Iredell Co. had a fire in it's courthouse and it is possible the will was destroyed or through carelessness was never recorded after it was probated in May 1803, rta) In DB G, p 366, 17 Aug 1811, David Queen sold Azel Sharpe for $250, 340 ac main Rocky Creek adj James Queen and Joseph Queen and James King, being part of 2 deeds sold to Francis Queen by John King 1783 and which right was conveyed to David Queen from his father, Francis Queen, by his last will & Tes. Signed Margaret Queen by Joseph Queen, Atty (note-this explains why Joseph Queen was not in a census of 1820 in NC- rta) IREDELL COUNTY DEEDS-Db H, p 231, 16 Nov 1810 NC granted Joseph Queen 176 ac waters Rocky Creek adj Richard Cook and $. Mayberry. DB H, p 285, 25 Sep 1811, Azel Sharpe to Joseph Queen for 85 pds, 149 1/2 ac waters Rocky Creek, adj Polly Queen (have not identified this Polly Queen unless she was an unmarried daughter of Francis & Margaret). DB O, p 109, 2 June 1829, Josea Redmon, Executor of estate of Joseph Queen, deceased, to Alfred McClelland of Wilkes Co., 53 pds for 176 ac. (Joseph died in Wilkes Co., NC apparently having returned from Clayburn Co., TN and his will is recorded in Wilkes Co WB 4, p 109-rta) WILKES COUNTY, NC DEEDS- DB N, p 358, 7 May 1833, Hosea Redmon, Executor estate Joseph Queen, deceased (Hosea of Iredell Co.) to Livi Brotherton & wife Jane, formerly Jane Queen, of Wilkes Co., 70 pds for their share of 140 1/2 ac in Wilkes County on waters Rocky Creek adjoining Polly Queen. Witnesses: Ellis Queen and William Milsaps. DB S, p 404, 19 Sep 1855, Hughs Queen and wife Martha acknowledged the sale of their share of land of Hillory Gilreath on the Brushy Mtns on Fishing Creek. Acknowledgment made in Milledgeville, GA. In 1790 Federal census, Francis Queen is in Iredell Co., NC with 1 m over 16, 3 m und 16, & 4 females. . In 1800 pg 612 he had 1 m 10-16, 1 m over 45, 1 f und 10, 1 f over 45. In 1810, in Iredell Co., David Queen had 1 m 16-26 and 1 f 16-26 indicating they were just married (marriage bonds for Iredell Co were destroyed by the fire they had in their courthouse 1854). Joseph Queen listed 1 m und 10, 1 m 16-26 (a brother?) 1 m 26-45, 1 f und 10, 1 f 26-45, 1 f over 45 (believed to be Margaret). In 1820, David Queen is in Iredell p 236, with 4 m und 10, 1 m 26-45, 1 f und 10, 1 f 26-45. (from the deed in Wilkes Co stating Joseph Queen was in Clayburn Co., TN, it is apparent that Margaret also went to TN with Joseph, since she is not in the household with David Queen. Also note that James Queen went to TN in the lifetime of his father). In 1830, 0 43, Iredell Co., David Queen listed 2 m und 5, 1 m 10-15, 2 m 15-20, 1 m 40-50, 2 f 10-15, 2 f 40-50 (possibly one a sister?) and 1 f 70-80, who is Margaret Queen. In 1830 in Wilkes Co NC Martha Queen was listed with 2 m 5-10, 1 m 10-15, 1 m 20-30, 1 f 5-10, 2 f 15-20, 1 f 40-50, so sometime between 1821 and the time Joseph Queen died in Wilkes Co in 1827, they returned from TN, and it is possible that after his death, Margaret Queen went over into Iredell and died in 1832 at the home of her son David Queen, with Joseph's widow Martha remaining in Wilkes. (There is also a record in the court minutes of either Wilkes or Iredell of the changing of the county line between the two counties during this period, which explains why their records are in both Iredell and Wilkes, for they lived on Rocky Creek in the Brushy Mountains which is a range of Mountains that are partly in both counties today-rta) >From the above records, Francis and Margaret (maiden name unknown) Queen had 7 children: 3 boys and 4 girls. James, David and Joseph were the males. Mary who married Samuel Correll is the only female that has been identified, since the will is not on record in Iredell Co. James went to Clayborn Co., TN, Joseph went to TN, but returned and died in Wilkes Co., NC, and David remained in Iredell Co., but I did not find him in 1850, however, his wife died before 1840 according to the census reading. And of course, Mary went to Indiana. Since no deeds mention any females, Margaret's will mentions only Mary, and Francis' will is not found, it is quite possible the other females on the census had died before Margaret made her will. >From census records in Wilkes Co and from his will, Joseph Queen and his wife Martha (maiden name unknown) had Elias (Elis), Francis who m. 19 Sep 1837 Wilkes Co to Lucy Anderson, James who m. 19 Dec 1840 Wilkes Co to Jemima Mayberry, HUGHS WHO MARRIED 24 MAY 1848 TO MARTHA L. GILREATH AND WENT TO GEORGIA, Jane who m. 27 Mar 1828 Levi Brotherton, Margaret who m. 4 Feb 1834 Litten Milsaps, Elizabeth and Alaminetta who m. 4 Aug 1840 Wilkes Co. to Cornelius Anderson. By 1850 only James Queen of the above children remained in Wilkes Co., NC. >From the same records of Iredell & Wilkes, David Queen and wife's name unknown, had Radford J. Queen who m. Mary Milsaps according to one of their children's death certs in Wilkes Co., Alfred m. 25 July 1837 to Susan Brotherton in Wilkes Co., Jesse m. 29 Aug 1837 Wilkes Co. to Nancy Milsaps, Emilia, Cyrus m. 18 Apr 1843 Wilkes Co to Martha Cook, Basti (female), Hartwell who married 15 Oct 1854 to Marh Adline Laws in Wilkes Co. and according to census a male unidentified. By 1850 Radford J., Jesse and Cyrus lived in Wilkes Co. and I do not find any of them living in Iredell. Since Francis Queen was the only Queen that continued in the Rowan and Iredell Co records, it is fairly certain that he was the progenitor of those in the report above. The records of Rowan Co, other than marriage bonds and census after 1773 and 1774, is not available to me in my own collection or in the public library. There are two published books on Rowan Co. and neither of these mentions either the Queens or the Corrells. (end of Queen report).
Hi Gene, I found a couple of mentions of the 8th North Carolina. I'll give you the links to check out. Clingman's Brigade Col. William S. John W. Queen, Jr. conscripted 3/25/1862, in Macon County, NC at age 45. Sent to hospital in Atlanta, GA on 1/19/1863, and returned to duty after 2/28/1863. Sent to Lumpkin Hospital in Rome, GA on 4/27/1863, where he died of erysipelas on 6/3/1863. (Thank you, Gene!) Gayle, Robert E. Lee was born in 1807 and served, of course, as a General, I am sure that men in their 50's were serving as soldiers. History books tell of men in their 50's and as young as 14 to 15 who served in the army. Others in their 60's often served as Home Guard soldiers. Go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mscivilw/2ndMS/k_company.htm and scroll down the list as there are some in their 50's. This is only one site where the age of some of the men serving is listed, but you can probably find more. Looking for an Engineer or outdoorsman or outdoorswoman who is familiar with Magellan, Garmin, etc. handheld GPS units. I wish to purchase the least-expensive, easiest to operate unit which will reveal latitude, longitude and altitude. I simply wish to push a button, if necessary, wherever I'm standing at a particular moment, and read a display of my exact (+- 25-50 meters) location and altitude. I'm looking at a $99 Magellan unit, but the description does not indicate if the unit has ability to report altitude. Bottom line. When I trek into the hill backcountry of N.C. and reach a spot which is important to my family history research, and that point is not listed on a topo map, I wish to be able to accurately place it there. Which is the least expensive GPS unit which will provide me with the data I seek? The location of the Rev. James Henry Queen family cemetery is going to be on my topo map after this next trek up Indian Creek, period. Thanks, Gene
Hi all, Is anyone researching the Moses Queen (b. ca 1836) who enlisted in the Confederate Army on 9-22-1862 at age 26 in Burke County...and did not survive the war? Looking for a family to link him with. Thanks, Gene
Thanks Charlton, I was beginning to wonder if the 8th Regt was a Union outfit, but the wording of the documents didn't make sense if that were true. I'll search harder. Gene
Gene, This may help answer some questions if you can make it to UNC to do research. After spending most of the day searching, I have not been able to locate an online account of the 8th NC. I have a few more ideas and will post any further info. Document 1 received from somewhere in Washington or Maryland in '70-80's. I can dig through some records and find the source, I believe. But here's most of it, which appears to be a govt form filled out by someone in DC in compliance with my request for info: Alfred Queen Pvt., Co C, 8 Regt. N.C. Gene: To answer your one of your specific questions only half-way; I know of no Internet site about Co C, 8th Regiment, NC Infantry, but if you want another option than Internet, I have had great success with the Confederate Research Center, Hillsboro, TX. You can read more about their holdings on: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mscivilw/csa_resc.html I've got from them for the company histories of my various CSA ancestors. The histories include when/where the companies were organized, what battles they were in (where and when), and when they were disbanded or surrendered - Four to six pages each, $5 each. If this is my Alfred, who was living in Jackson County in 1860 and 1870, then why would he be released in Burke County? Was there a yankee prison over there?
