Gotta keep plucking away and eventually the circumstantial evidence mounts to the point that it can pretty well be taken as gospel. Searching through some old deeds a year or so ago and came upon the name of a creek near Cullowhee which was important to my research. The name today is Wayehutta Creek, but the name on the deeds was werry hut and some such stuff. Anyway, I accepted it as the same...plus the deeds "helped" prove my research if I interpreted it favorably that way. Anyone else ever guilty of that? Anyway, I visited Western Carolina University recently and viewed the maps/sketches of Robert Love's 1820 survey of western NC lands ceded by the Cherokees. There next to his sketch of Caney Fork was the name of "Wary hutta Creek. On another document was the name Weary Hut's Creek. That creek hasn't moved in 181 years...but today it's Wayehutta Creek and I no longer have to guess which creek is mentioned on those deeds. More convincing evidence that my Samuel Queen (ca 1776-1780) was in that neck of the woods in 1830. On a related subject, Love's sketch of "Newton's Creek" appears to be Cooper's Creek of today; his "Welch Creek" appears to be today's Galbraith and his North/South line to the Tuckasegee appears to almost or touch the Oconaluftee just East of Ela, then follows the Oconaluftee to the Tuckasegee. This would seem to put the old Haywood/Macon Co., NC line coming down Thomas Ridge, then Coopers Creek on to the Tuckasegee. But, the fly in the ointment, why did Love sketch out a "Newton's Creek" in 1820 when Ebenezer "Nuton" bought land in the area in 1830, then in 1836 Ebenezer "Newton" bought land adjoining land on the E. bank of Newtons Mill Creek? Was Ebenezer there in 1820 or was it some other Nuton/Newton? Ebenezer was on 1830 Macon census; where was he in 1820? Anyone? Gene
Anyone researching above subject of Burke Co., NC and wish a copy of his pension applications of 1905 and 1906? Also have received copy of pension application for A. H. Queen, aged 82 in 1901 of Wolf Mountain, Jackson Co.NC. (One page of the two page document clearly lists name as A. H. Queen in four places; pg two clearly lists name as A. L. Queen in three places....same Co. B, 25th Regt.) Contact me privately if anyone wishes a copy of this. I was picking through straws in search of more military info on my Alfred of 1810. Win some...lose some. Gene
Don't know if "Pathfinder" ever found this cemetery, but specific directions for he and anyone else are: Driving from Waynesville towards Sylva, NC, turn right on State Road 1465 Rosemount Road (if one passes it, then 1.6 miles past it will be Woodfin Rd on right; so turn around and try again). Travel Rosemount Road 1.2 miles, then turn left into the private drive. Walk about 500' down/up the drive to a small road/trail on the left. The cemetery is a few hundred feet up the trail on the right. Graves include: J. M. Queen (b. 1848) and wife, Margaret (b. 1854) Rev. T. H. Queen (b. 1852) Margaret Parris Queen (b. 1862) others... J(ohn) M(errit) Queen and Rev. T(homas) H(enson) Queen were sons of James Smith Queen of 1819, who was a son of William Lewis Queen, Jr. (b. ca 1774-1775). Gene
Just a tidbit of circumstantial evidence regarding relationships. Martha Jane Queen (b. 6-17-1834 d. 8-18-1848) dau of subject, marked headstone is at the foot of the marked graves of John and Jane Bryson (parents of Isabella). Can be found in Cullowhee Baptist Church Cemetery on corner of Buzzard's Roost Road and Central Drive on the Western Carolina University campus, Cullowhee, NC. Gene
Anyone know anything about this cemetery? Just came across it. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/buncombe/cemeteries/queensrd.txt Vicki ============================================================ "If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around." --Cowboy wisdom
Hey Yall, I reckon Gene has coaxed an intro out of me. I don't think I can add any info to data bases though as all the info I have I have stolen....er....I mean borrowed from Elaine English, Mandy, Carol & others. I just sit back and read in amazement at all the info the good folks on this list are some how able to dig up. My name is Scott Queen. I was born in Clayton (Rabun Co.) Ga. in 1960. My Dad is Calvin Queen. He was born in Oconee Co. S.C. in 1936. His Dad (my grandpa who died a couple of years ago) is J.D. Queen of Mountain City Ga. As far as I know J.D. don't stand for anything........just J.D. My Granny (J.D.'s wife) still lives at the foot of Black Rock Mountain in Mountain City. Grandpa J.D.'s Dad is Elford Queen. From here the stolen......er ......borrowed.....research kicks in. Which I assume to be correct. Trusting soul, I am. * Parents of Elford---Samuel Patton Queen & Serena Hunnicutt * Parents of Samuel Patton Queen---William Queen & Mary Ann Patton * Parents of William Queen---Samuel Queen & Nancy UNKNOWN Anyone got anything going back any further? Nancy still UNKNOWN? I e-mailed offlist once to Sheila Stephens (whos Grandmother was J.D.'s sister Annie Belle). She said she went & talked to my Granny last year & collected some info. I have also corresponded once with Diann Williams. Elford was her Great Uncle. I think it's just too cool to meet cousins on here you didn't know about. Sheila or Diann (sorry, don't remember which one.....memory sux) asked me about my e-mail address pertaining to a motorcycle. Yes....it does. I have a '60 Harley Panhead. Gonna go now.....wishing all a good weekend.......keep digging Nice To Meet Yall, Scott P.S. Hows Mandy?
Hi all, Recent trip to Haywood, Jackson and Swain Counties, NC was very successful. Old 1885 homeplace of my g.grandpa, Rev. James Henry Queen now documented with a number of GPS and altimeter readings (longitude/latitude/elevation) now plotted on a topo map. Also located some photos of late 1800's and early 1900's log homes of a couple of great great aunts. Question for the analytical experts in the group... It has been handed down through the family that my Alfred of 1810 died before his wife... and that after Alfred's death the kids wanted their mom, Mary, to move up Carson Branch. She agreed to the move after they promised to, upon her death, return her body down the mountain for burial at the Love Cemetery beside Alfred's grave. They agreed. We don't know when Alfred died, but church records reflect Mary's death as May 5, 1878. When did Alfred die? At least what was the approximate year of death? Alfred was alive at the time of the 1870 census and Mary died in 1878...so Alfred died between those years. His first child to marry did so in 1871. Another in 1873, another 1874. Alfred was not a witness to the marriage of any child. The 1873 marriage of son, Joseph, was to Lydia Jane Carson. Both Joe and Jane are buried at the Carson Cemetery up Carson Branch. The minister and one witness to the 1874 marriage of dau., Martha, were the same as for Joe and Jane. W. T. Carson was a witness. The 1874 marriage of Martha was at the home of "Mary Queen". Why did Alfred not attend the wedding of his first child, Mary in 1871? Okay, so he didn't like her pick for a husband, so he sulked and stayed home....a Queen trait? But what about son, Joe, in 1873 or dau., Martha, in 1874? Is there a clue here, or did dads simply stay away from weddings back then? Thanks for any thoughts. Gene
<when I "speak" in the absolute, that opinion is based upon the best evidence available to me.....which may be inadequate.> < In the absolute sense, I neither accept nor reject either possibility. My apologies if I have mislead anyone. Hey Gene, Kinda neutral & vague there......ever consider a career in politics?......just kidding, Man......always enjoy your in depth input to this list. Have a Great Weekend Scott Queen
Greetings everyone, Just a short note to restate a position posted a number of times. Any and all postings to this list by me has been and will be data or analysis/opinions. Each researcher must determine the validity of any posted data or assumptions. Even when I "speak" in the absolute, that opinion is based upon the best evidence available to me.....which may be inadequate. Specifically, I do not have evidence reflecting the parents of Isaac Queen of ca 1806-1809. It has been suggested that his dad was a George Queen or a Samuel Queen. In the absolute sense, I neither accept nor reject either possibility. My apologies if I have mislead anyone. Gene

Hi, I recently tried to get a DAR record of someone who had been accepted on the Revolutionary War record of service of Samuel Queen, b. 1759/60. I was surprised that I could find nothing listed in the Index. Can anyone furnish any information that might help me in this??? Lee L.
Hi folks! Okay, the first coupla names beginning with "Q" that first come to my mind are "Quentin" and "Quincy". Oh, for shame! Actually, whenEVER I see a "Q" in somebody's name, I can't help but wonder...so, in case anybody's wonderin' what stirred up my gray matter today, I would have to say it was just a little local history: "Samuel Q. Broughton for $600. Broughton was a native of Kentucky..." Have been doing some filing and came across a listing of N. C. Wills (1665-1900) located somewhere in NC. I'm going to list the names in date order. If a copy of these wills have been transcribed to the QUEEN-L, will someone please acknowledge. I'm going to inquire about obtaining a copy of some of those we don't already have. Names are given as listed (unless a sneaky little typo has popped in): 1774 Loftin Quinn 1790 William Quin 1792 William Quine 1803 Francies Queen 1816 Henry Quine 1826 Henson Queen - yes 1827 Joseph Queen 1831 Margaret Queen - yes 1844 Easter Quinn 1845 James Queen - yes 1852 John Queen 1860 Jesse Quinn 1862 John B. Queen 1862 Ichabod Quinn 1863 Thomas F. Quinn 1867 Aaron Quinn 1870 Jesse Queen 1871 Hugh Quin 1876 John W. Quinn 1878 James Quinn 1883 James A. Queen 1892 Eliza E. Quinn 1893 James S. Queen - yes 1897 Mitchel Queen Gene
Hi all, The transcript (poorly done by me, I might add) was posted by me a year or so ago. Special note that I believe the dates to be 1830 and 1836. But, here's the questions: What is meant by "Judicullar forks" of Scotts Creek? Anyone familiar with the name Thomas Woodfin? Note also that a Wm Queen witnessed this deed. Gene Book C, Pg 466 Deeds (Grantee), Haywood County Know all men by these presents that I James Patterson of the State of North Carolina and County of Haywood for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and eighty dollars, the receipt and payment whereof is hereby acknowledged hath bargained, and sold unto James Queen of the County and State aforesaid a certain tract of land lying and being in the County aforesaid on both sides of the Judicullar forks of Scotts Creek including the improvement where Thomas Windfin ---- ---- Beginning on a poplar thence South one hundred and thirty four poles to a stake, thence West one hundred and twenty poles to a stake, thence North one hundred and thirty poles to a stake, thence to the beginning. Containing one hundred acres together with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging or appertaining, the same being originally granted to John Fogner and by him conveyed to one George Gunter and by him conveyed to James Patterson and I convey it to the same James Queen his heirs and assigns for his and their proper use. In witness I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 24th day of August 1880 (?). James Patterson (seal) Wm Shoutfull Wm Queen. Acknowledged. State of N. Carolina, Haywood County. October session 1886. The ------- deed was duly acknowledged in open court recorded and ordered to be registered. Test. Wm Welch By. S. Fitzgerald D. C. Registered the 20th day of December A. D. 1886. B. Lumbr (sp?) R. H. C. O.E.Q. Note: Pg 79 of the Grantee Index of Haywood County notes the date of this instrument as 8-1830; but the dates on the instrument appear to be 1880 and 1886??????
While looking for my great great grandmother, Catherine Queen, I came upon this bit of information on the World Connect Project. There was a Catherine Queen, born 19 Jul. 1805, E. Liverpool, OH. Father's name, Jonah Queen - Mother Sarah Catherine March. I went all the way back in the family line and it seems that her great, great uncles and cousins were in the line of "Old" William Queen. Her family were originally from Loudoun Co., VA., but moved to Liverpool, OH. There were seven children, six were born in Virginia, and Catherine, the youngest, was born in OH. I believe this Catherine is the Catherine who came to Rutherford, NC in 1829 and made bastardy charges against Henson Johnston, and 1831 made basterdy charges against Daniel Hicks. Also, she shows up in Lincoln, NC, 1845 with sons William, Berry and George, Students in Dist. 36, and in the 1850 Lincoln County, NC Fed. Census. She never married, but had several children. If anyone has any further information on this, please let me know. Anita Payne chcpt@mindspring.com
Hi all, First, a world of thanks to Reiley Kidd who posted data some months ago concerning the land grant to Alfred Queen in Haywood County. (Sometime earlier I had found the sale from Alfred; but had not located the info concerning Alfred's acquiring the land.) Reiley's post eventually prompted me to contact the state office...and did the mailman bring some good news today! Perhaps the Samuel Queen of Ga folks as well as the James H. Queen of 1808 folks will wish to take note of this for more circumstantial evidence. State of North Carolina Haywood County By virtue of a warrant of no. 220 & Entered 16th December A D 1833. I have Surveyed a Tract of Land for Alfred Queen on the waters of Scotts Creek beginning on or near the Line of a Tract of Land known by the Woodfin Place Beginning on a Chesnut Tree & Runs north Sixty four poles to a Stake thence west one hundred & twenty Eight poles to a stake thence South Sixty four poles to a Stake thence to the beginning Containing fifty acres Surveyed August 11th AD 1834. Elihu Chambers Cl (?) Wm Queen & James Queen C B (OEQ: Chain Bearers?) ...............Another document refers to Elijah Deaver as the "Entry officer of Claims for lands in the County". It further defines the land as "Beginning on or near the line of a tract of land known by the woodfin place running up a small Branch on Boath Sides for Compliment". These documents, combined with other circumstantial evidence, seem to shore up the argument that Samuel Queen (b. ca 1776-1780) and located in Haywood County near Cullowhee in 1820 and 1830 was the same Samuel Queen who went to Georgia. I further suggest the following as children of this Samuel: William Queen (b. 1800-1803) w/son, Samuel Patton, born in Macon in 1833 James H Queen (b. 1808) md. Isabella (and named a son Samuel Houston). James lived in the Cullowhee area of Macon Co. in 1830. Alfred Queen (b. 1810) and named a son James Henry. Hugh Queen (b. 1811-1820) Daughter (can't find her name at moment, Mary or Margaret) m. Wm B. Morgan And, is there a clue here: James H. Queen of 1808 named his first daughter, Martha Jane Alfred Queen of 1810 named his first daughter, Martha Jane and his first son, James Henry. Hugh Queen of 1811-1820 named his first daughter, Martha J ........so, I'm suggesting the name of Martha Jane as a possible first wife of this Samuel Queen. Is there a Georgia marriage record of Samuel Queen (age 60-70) marrying a Nancy between 1840-1850 in Habersham or Rabun Co? .......I'm also suggesting the name of Martha Jane as a possible sister to these boys. Anyone wish to pursue any of this? Gene
