Hi All, I have beaten the same bushes over and over again for the last 15 years. Maybe someone else can use a new stick to beat them differently. Here is the skinny. James Campbell Queen was born 1819..and that is a fact that holds in every census. But, the census is the problem. The first time I find James is in the 1860 census, married to his second wife, Lucinda. So, why can't I find him in 1850 with his first wife Priscilla?????? I have tried to search the census records using every trick I know to find a match for him and his family. And, unless they have him listed under a different name.. he is not in the 1850 census. Here is the data I have to locate him... I'd give a million to find him in 1850. here is an interesting point... his son Thomas Jake Queen was born in 1850 and the census says consistently in Arkansas. All other children born in TN, so why'd he go to Arkansas that one darn year I want to find him. Who'd he go visit. Why didn't he stay??????? Thanks Carol James Campbell Queen... usually listed in the census as James C. Queen b. 1819 in Tenn. His father born in NC. His mother born in KY. First wife Priscilla Jobe Second wife Lucinda Haswell Mewborn Newborn Third wife Nancy Isabella Montague Warrington CHILDREN: 1. Mary Jane b. 1/4/1846 married to William Fortunatus Dodson in 1866 2. Nancy L.C. b. 1847 married to Andrew W.J. Halford in 1866 3. Elizabeth b. 1848 nothing more known about her 4. Thomas Jake b. 1850 ARKANSAS married to Amanda Grimes in 1869 5. William McDonald b. 1852 married to Elizabeth Hill in 1875 6. James H. b. 1853 married to Frances L. McDaniel/McDonald in 1871 7. Charles Franklin b. 1856 8. Priscilla Allamante b. 1858 9. Thanks, Katy. Yes, I finally feel "at home". However, there's still so much work to do and many more discoveries to make. Still looking for Alfred's pa, then the correct lineage back to old William. Hopefully, the 3d Reuben Queen lineage DNA sample will put a better light on the path of Reuben researchers as well. Congratulations, Gene. Do you feel "at home"? Katy
Sharon Tate Moody says, in her Tempa Tribune article: "the marriage contract was the last contract a woman could make. Marriage made her a "feme covert"--literally a "covered woman." She lost control over her property and lost her ability to enter a contract. "This comes from a concept called "unity of the husband and wife'. Once united the couple was legally one person, with the husband the ruling party. A husband generally could do as he pleased with his wife's property and earnings. In return he was bound to support her as long as she did not run off with another man....Gradually things improved for women, especially regarding inheritance and land ownership. 1809 Conn. allowed married women to make a wil;l 1829 Ill. women over 18 could dispose of real and personal property; 1839 Miss. guaranteed married women the right to receive income from the couple's property and protected it from being used to cover her husband's debts. 1844 Maine exempted a married woman's real and personal property from being possessed by her husband. New York and PA soon followed; NY in 1848 passed the "Married Woman's Property Act," which was used as a model for all other states between 1848 and 1895." As I said earlier-- a woman in business used her name initials when she advertised, never her full name. There were women conducting their own businesses or investing in businesses. A boarding house advertisd in a local paper might be shown as "Mrs. J. A. Monroe's Board. " Katy

I have been musing about Charles and the match with a Quinn. I have long been baffled by Charles coming into possession of 1200 acres in America yet nothing being there showing he even existed in the UK. I wonder if the "story" about him is true in part? In other words, IF he actually was a Quinn was there perhaps a Quinn that served as a Magistrate. If so, why would he present a "false" history and if false where did he get the money to purchase 1200 acres. Are there records that still exist that would show where the 1200 acres came from? -- Skip Queen Viruses? Spyware? Not me! I use Linux!! Linspire - The world's easiest desktop Linux!
Skip, I've done nothing of significance regarding Quin/Quinn. I check in at YSearch on occasion and run some of the samples I've sponsored against the YSearch database to see what shows up. I found David Quinn there. An e-mail to him resulted in a few exchanges of e-mail with him; then he went cold. No further e-mail response. I have not forgotten you - been awfully busy but have also been pondering this. Came to realize I first need to know what has already been done so I do not suggest things that would be duplication. How did you run across this particular Quinn? Only things I can come up with at this time are: 1) Posting in Quinn lists not only for people to give DNA samples but also those who have traced their genealogy to the first Quinn to come over from Ireland. Perhaps (if Charles actually came from Quinn and not MacQueen) someone else may have the connection after (or before) arriving in the US. 2) Looking for appropriate outlets in Ireland for DNA samples as well as genealogy 3) Looking at passenger lists around the time Charles should have arrived from Ireland and instead of looking for MacQueen looking for Quinn, then if some come up that are good possibilities trying to find people living now who descend from that Quinn who will participate. If we could get some donors and they match the Quinn donor and the three of us (from Charle) then we have accomplished something. I realize these are generalities, and you may have already done some of these. I have been following the Quinn DNA study and have exchanged emails with the administrator. I have the preliminary results of the first 7 Quinns as of a few months ago. I will followup with the administrator and see if any one has upgraded their tests - then I will post either the results or some analysis. In the initial tests, there were some matches at the 12 marker level with at least 2 of the Queen groups. Its been a while, but we got final 37 marker results for participant 26040. We also have two new participants in board. Even though things are slow right now, we need to keep identifying new participants for all groups. Each new participant has the potential to hold the keys to the DNA magic kingdom for all of us Queens. So let's keep beating the bushes and rustling up new Queen donors. Perhaps I'm missing something, but it appears that there may be a great number of opportunities for DNA samples from male descendants of subject to determine with a high degree of probability just what the DNA was of subject. I'm bogged down in a maze of data that's difficult to sort through; thus I will await the info from Don Chandler before spending any more time on this. Gene

By this time, Martha Jane had lost : ALL of her daughters were dead; one baby in 1853;and in April 1900 her oldest son William L. [I believe that family had just spent part of the Spring in Williamson County picking cotton.]When the census taker turned up in June they were still mourning. [He probably never went in the house.] Elias Butler Queen, Sr. born 2/15/1821 NC, died 10/16/1906. [I believe that is also the reason why Robert Lee, their son, was in Williamson County for the census count and not in his home in Channing, Hartley County Tx.] Martha Jane Barber born 2/27/1832 in Indiana died 3/22/1908. Both buried at Queen Hill in Williamson Co. I believe Lee's father, Elias B., sorted out his estate at this time [prior to his death in 1906], since some of the older sons and Lee were not included in the will which was written later. Apparently Elias settled money on them [Statement made by cousin Archie Queen about 1978]. [Elias Butler Queen -- I have just sent you the children and grandchildren list]. Katy
