    3. Hello Dan: Can someone give me a hand with this "rite"? She was baptized in the Catholic Church at birth, this is verified with the record. I believe she didn't marry in the Catholic Church (and married a non-Catholic) at the age of abt 16. By the time of this 1894 record, she had at least one child by her marriage. The title of the rite is "Abjuration" , My understanding is that is usually means denouncing something: as when the Huguenots abjured their Protestant religion to come to Canada in the 16-1700's. This document needs a more accurate translator to understand specifically what it says, I've never seen one like it. abjure: solemnly renounce (a belief, cause, or claim). I also believe that if it was something imposed by the RC Church, it would have been excommunication not abjure. But I've been known to be wrong before.     3. This is in fact an "abjuration", or renouncing of another faith to join (or perhaps rejoin) the catholic church. THe key part is "Nous avons reçu la profession de foi catholique de Marilda Tremblay, agée de 19 ans, épouse de John Woods, et l'avons absolvée de l'hérésie et de toute coutume encourue pour cette cause, en présence de ..." She is a heretic no more.     3. Thanks to all that gave this go! Now, if I can just figure out how to effectively use the new list format. I put Raymond Perrault's comment, in the comment box on the Ancestry record.
