I am wondering if anyone knows how to access the parish registers for Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. The parish is on the map of parishes on the PRDH, but I cannot find it in the list of parish registers that are on FamilySearch. Looking for ancestor Victorine Lapointe (Audet dit Lapointe) b. 16 Dec 1864 in St. Jean (according to death cert from Rhode Island). She was the daughter of Joseph Audet dit Lapointe and Eulalie Caron. She appears on the 1871 census with them and sibs in St. Hyacinthe. I've searched the registers there without success. They are on the 1881 census in Iberville. I have searched every parish register in the area of St. Jean-sur-Richelieu and every parish register I can find relative to Iberville. No luck. The other odd piece is that the couple were married in St. Guillaume-d'Upton and 2 children before and one after her were baptised in that parish. Don't know why she was born in St. Jean (or indeed if she was). Any ideas would be most welcome.
Could you post the URL for the Familysearch Catholic Churches please. I don't have it here on my iPad. Thank you, this is correct. And sorry, I was in error when I stated they were married in St. Guillaume (I did have their marriage record).. She was also born in St-Barnabé-Sud 17 Apr 1842. And although his residence is listed as Ste Rosalie, they must have moved soon after to St. Guillaume, because their first child was born there 23 Nov 1862 and sadly buried 3 days later. Next child Eulalie Cordelia was born there 16 Sep 1863. She must have died before 1871 because she is not on the census with them. Third child listed in St Guillaume, Joseph was born 8 Nov 1865. Victorine must have been born between Eulalie Cordelia and Joseph - but not in St. Guillaume. But, again I can't find the registers for Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and I suspect she will be recorded there. So, any luck you have in finding her (and her other sibs) will be most appreciated. Thank you for the searching Renee. This makes sense. The father Joseph's death cert from Pawtucket RI in 1918 has the informant as Louis Lapointe (does not give relationship). They both appear in the City directories in 1917 and 1918 living with or near each other. Have not been able to find any trace of when or where Eulalie died. The 1881 Canada census has Louis (at least I think that's what it says) born Mar 1881. At the time of the census they were in Iberville. I looked at St. Guillaume. If you look at the FamilySearch images, image 1784 of 1890 has Eulalie Cordelia. What is important is that this baptism, in September, was written in the book in the middle of December's listings, b 181, and next one (Dec. ) is 182. Something caused the baptism to be overlooked - perhaps they were copying from another register. My point is, perhaps Victorine's baptism was also overlooked. Wow Christine. What a find. I hadn't noticed she was stuck in the middle of December events. However, when I look at the other option for 1863 for that parish on FamilySearch, i.e. the one that covers 1858-1870, Image 259 has her as born in December. And the date 17th does fit between the two Dec dates 16th and 21st. I have no idea how there came to be two different registers - although I've found that this happens with some of the other parishes too. I'm guessing with the entry you found that whoever was writing it inadvertently wrote September, when they should have written December. I need to change my records. At the same time, this is a good thought to keep in mind. I did just find an entry in another parish register where the person I was looking for in Dec of 1833 (and who appeared in the index for that year in the register) was actually recorded at the end of all the December entries for 1832. Something caused the baptism to be overlooked - perhaps they were copying from another register. My point is, perhaps Victorine's baptism was also overlooked. I have no idea how there came to be two different registers There were always two registers one kept at the parish and a duplicate was made to first turn in to the bishop and later turn over to the civil authorities, If you have problems reading the copy on ancestry the one on familysearch MAY be the 2nd handwritten "original" What was the year Quebec started having civil registers? 1930s?
You should also notice that the books (or microfilm) the records to 1866 (I'm doing this from memory) were for St. Guillaume AND St. Bonaventure d'Upton. Then the next set of years you'll find St Bonaventure d'Upton by itself, broken away from St. Guillaume. Next : St. Jean sur du Richville is St. Jean-sur-Richelieu . Third: In the 1881 census Victorine and Joseph are two years apart in age. Both are born in the Fall, so we can't be looking at the age being split due to the census date. Victorine is listed as 17, and Joseph as 15. Joseph's baptism is found in 1865, which would make Victorine's in 1863. I have had relatives baptised with one name and show up later in the census under another name entirely. Are you sure Eulalie Cordelia isn't Victorine? as you state: " the one that covers 1858-1870, Image 259 has her as born in December. And the date 17th does fit between the two Dec dates 16th and 21st. " Didn't you say she was born Dec. 16th? This is just too coincidental. 1871 shows her to be born in 1862, so maybe it was 1863, off by a year. If you can't find the death of Eulalie Cordelia you should consider senario seriously, especially since Joseph was born in the same parish. One more thing - taken from the wiki.familysearch.org/en/Canada,_Quebec._Catholic_parish_registers talks about the Record History "Between 1679 and 1993, priests were required to make two copies of all baptisms, marriages, and burials. The second copy was sent to civil authorities, and these are found in civil archives." Yes, someone else mentioned this - explains why there are two different registers. And when I compare the two for Eulalie the one with the Sep date in the middle of Dec does look more like it was done after the fact - neat writing, everything tidy, etc. On Saturday, June 23, 2018, 8:23:58 PM MST, Christine Morton <[email protected]> wrote: One more thing - taken from the wiki.familysearch.org/en/Canada,_Quebec._Catholic_parish_registerstalks about the Record History"Between 1679 and 1993, priests were required to make two copies of all baptisms, marriages, and burials. The second copy was sent to civil authorities, and these are found in civil archives." On Sat, Jun 23, 2018 at 9:41 PM, Christine Morton <[email protected]> wrote: You should also notice that the books (or microfilm) the records to 1866 (I'm doing this from memory) were for St. Guillaume AND St. Bonaventure d'Upton. Then the next set of years you'll find St Bonaventure d'Upton by itself, broken away from St. Guillaume. Next : St. Jean sur du Richville is St. Jean-sur-Richelieu.Third: In the 1881 census Victorine and Joseph are two years apart in age. Are you sure Eulalie Cordeliaisn't Victorine? as you state: " the one that covers 1858-1870, Image 259 has her as born in December. And the date 17th does fit between the two Dec dates 16th and 21st." Didn't you say she was born Dec. 16th? This is just too coincidental. 1871 shows her to be born in 1862, so maybe it was 1863, off by a year. If you can't find the death of Eulalie Cordelia you should consider senario seriously, especially since Joseph was born in the same parish. On Sat, Jun 23, 2018 at 8:38 PM, franalm via Quebec-Research <[email protected]> wrote: Wow Christine. On Saturday, June 23, 2018, 2:53:23 PM MST, Christine Morton <[email protected]> wrote: I looked at St. Thank you Forrest for this resource. I did not find her on it, but I may find it useful for other people. I must report progress since last posting. I did find a marriage record for her, to Israel Bessette, and found the death records for her grandparents and gr-grandparents, all in Saint-Athanase-de-Bleury, Iberville, Quebec, Canada. Don't know if there might be a baptismal record for her there, as the source I have does not go earlier than 1877 - PRDH says the parish started in 1832. Fran, Thank you for this. I'm assuming none of the Audet births had parents Joseph and Eulalie? Were you also able to search for Lapointe - sometimes members of the family were recorded as Audet, sometimes as Lapointe, and sometimes as both? Any ideas would be most welcome. _______________________________________________ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~For the list web page, goto: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~unclefred/main.htm And we are on facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/QRlist/ List Archives are at: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/QUEBEC-RESEARCH _______________________________________________ Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref Unsubscribe https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/postorius/lists/[email protected]/ Archives: https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/hyperkitty/list/[email protected]/ Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community _______________________________________________ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~For the list web page, goto: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~unclefred/main.htm And we are on facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/QRlist/ List Archives are at: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/QUEBEC-RESEARCH _______________________________________________ Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref Unsubscribe https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/postorius/lists/[email protected]/ Archives: https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/hyperkitty/list/[email protected]/ Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community
I checked under both names. No Joseph & Eulalie as parents for the Audets born in those years; nor were there any Lapointes On 22/06/18 5:21 PM, franalm via Quebec-Research wrote: Fran, Thank you for this. I'm assuming none of the Audet births had parents Joseph and Eulalie? Were you also able to search for Lapointe - sometimes members of the family were recorded as Audet, sometimes as Lapointe, and sometimes as both? No luck.
