Thanks everyone. Can someone clarify the "rehabilitation marriage" of 1655? Some articles or family history pages suggest it was because she was 11 and a half years old and they need to be 12 to be married. I always understood it like the difference of filing court papers for a marriage versus a church wedding, at least in the modern sense. I understand in some cases where the local official conducing the ceremony could be of a different religion or in some cases like the Acadians, in exile, you have the rehabilitation marriage. In those cases, both are valid. I suppose what I am really asking is was the first marriage was valid or not? I'm also curious about the alleged 1643 marriage promise or whatever they might call it. It must be some form of arranged marriage. I am interested because it was planned about 12 years in advance. Since she was only 12 at the time, the marriage was rehabilitated at Montréal, April 12 1655. While away from his home in Longue-Pointe on busine in Montreal, Jean Aubuchon was found dead of knife wounds in the bed of the townhouse where he was staying, on December 3, 1685. Marguerite Sedilot, his wife and mother of his 13 children, accused Jacques Paillerault, her alleged lover, of the murder. After a trial which lasted about three years, and having found no witnesses to the act, a judgment was rendered requiring Jacques to pay the expenses of the suit, and sentencing him to time served. It quotes from St. Louis Genealogy Society Quarterly, XVII, No. 3 by Jeananne M. Beuer. It says he entered into a marriage contract in 1643 when he was 9 and Marguerite Sedilot wasn't even 1. Does anyone know where might I go to find a copy of this marriage contract? Was that common practice? It goes on to say he was making a lot of money selling "fire water to the Indians" but was convicted of it because it was illegal and was later banished from Montreal. Another website states, "Jean was Killed on November 30, 1685, in his bed. Wife Marguerite Sedilot accused her alleged lover, Jacques Paillerault of the murder. Jacques was acquitted after a trial that lasted three years." Any advice on where to search would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jesse
