Hi Selma, A minor correction, the death record of Susanne Bureau states her age as 77 years, not 70. It appears that Paul-Olivier Mercier and Joseph Mercier are the same person. A review of Bob Chenard's index of Beauce County records shows that there were three women, Susanne Bureau, who survived to marriage. Only one married a Mercier. Where records were in St. Joseph parish, the husband's name is Paul-Olivier. Where records were in St. François parish, the husband's name is Joseph. In the Mercier + Bureau marriage record at St. Joseph parish, Paul-Olivier is said to be son of parents Augustin Mercier and deceased Félicité Boucher of St. François. The two parishes are immediately adjacent to each other. St. François was the younger parish to the south which had become the natural destination of families migrating from St. Marie and St. Joseph. In time sequence, all Mercier records involving Susanne at St. Joseph occurred before those at St. François. There were several "Joseph Mercier" in the area, but none who could be a stray candidate for this discussion. Joseph Mercier, spouse of Susanne Bureau, died at St. François on 4 Sep 1827. The record indicated his age as "about 50 years," placing his birth at about 1776-1778. Paul-Olivier Mercier was born at St. Joseph on 25 Aug 1778 to Augustin Mercier and Félicité Boucher. His godfather was Paul-Olivier Bourg. The same couple had a son Joseph born at St. Joseph on 3 Mar 1776, who died the next month on 9 Apr. So, for whatever reason, it appears that Paul-Olivier became known as Joseph in later life in St. François parish, possibly in honor of his own father or his deceased infant brother. Parents sometimes officially"recycled" given names of deceased infants to later children. Even while Paul-Olivier was resident in St. Joseph, it is possible that his parents enjoyed an informal habit of calling him Joseph. The parish priest would have retained his official name for record purposes, while the priest in St. François in later years might not have felt the same constraint. I will send you attachments from Bob Chenard's index in a separate email. Al Poulin On May 12, 2014, at 1:02 AM, Roch wrote: > Hi! Hello Selma, Like Unc Fred advised today, I went to the list archives. I did not get Don's response in e-mail. Don's answer is a big help. Al Poulin Date: Mon, 12 May 2014 08:52:54 -0400 (EDT) Thelma, I believe "Joseph" & " Paul-Olivier" are the same person (so that would mean only one Suzanne Bureau as well)....just referred to as Joseph on his death record in 1827 and Suzanne's death record in 1841 ...........their son Richard born 1810 has father "paul-olivier" on baptismal record, but father "Joseph" on his marriage record. Richard's brother Gaspard was a witness at marriage >>>Gaspard's birth record has "paul-olivier" as father Don On May 12, 2014, at 1:02 AM, Roch wrote: > Hi!
