If the record is in french .......look for "baptise" or baptisee" and "ne' or "nee" .......if there's the extra "e" then it denotes a female child being born and baptized and yes, usually Josephte is a female Joseph would be the male, in many cases you find "josephte" using Josephine or Josette.
