Does anyone happen to know if it is still a practice, to forward copies, or the originals of parish records to the diocese involved? Lorie
In Quebec, as far as Catholic parishes are concerned, it is. The recent diocese records are not available to the public. But, as you might already know, since 1994 religious records are no longer the legal records in Québec. Births, deaths, and marriages and any other act relating to civil status, such as change of name, change of sex, adoption, etc., are now recorded by the civil authority known as the Directeur de l'État civil. http://www.etatcivil.gouv.qc.ca/en/default.html Mona On 14-06-09 8:25 AM, Lorie Begin wrote: > Does anyone happen to know if it is still a practice, to forward copies, or > the originals of parish records to the diocese involved? > > > Lorie
Actually, the extra copy did not go to the diocese. Each year, the parishes sent a second copy of their registers, known as the civil copy, to a palais de justice, or the Office of the Superior Court in the Judicial District in which the church existed.
