Patricia, I'm taking the liberty of modifying the Subject Line, hoping it maintains continuity with its original. We'll see. Wow, Whoa! Are you saying that a descendant of Louis Foley received a pension? If so, I suspect that Louis, for U.S. Government purposes, used the name Foley as his most authentic surname. This is regardless of the name of his guardian. Louis may finally have gone by what everybody in the parish informally "knew" to be his father's name, regardless of any records written by the priests and any notaires. I would look for any baptismal or other record of an "inconnu" born in the right place at the right time, whose godparents may have included a Joseph Poulin, or indeed, any Poulin. I would look for any records involving the name Foley, and any variants, in the several decades before and after 1800. And what is known about Joseph Poulin, his family? Was there a marriage contract for Louis and M.-Charlotte Gonthier? Where there Irish families in the area?
