AUBURN, Mass. – Auburn police are investigating a cemetery that was vandalized Wednesday, for the second time this year. At about 4:20 p.m., police responded to the Worcester Hebrew Cemetery for a report of vandalism. According to police, 18 headstones were knocked over or damaged. A few may be irreparable. There was about $15,000 worth of damage. It's the final resting place for generations of Jewish families in the Central Mass. area. Lewis Lasky's parents are buried there, and he was outraged when he learned what happened. "I was hurt, I was angry," he said. Although he was upset, he was not surprised given that the cemetery had been vandalized before. Jordan Robins, the cemetery's head of operations, reported damage just after Memorial Day and twice prior to that. This time, Robins thinks the vandals struck sometime this past weekend and said they left beer cans all over the place. He does not believe that this had anything to do with religion, he is certain that the cemetery is an easy target because it's in a remote, wooded area. "There is no supervision, there is no electricity," he said. A storage shed on the property was also burned down last year. Auburn police are investigating but don't have any leads, Robins said. The Jewish Federation of Central Mass. is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of the suspects. If you'd like to make a donation to the fund to replace the headstones, please make a check out to Worcester Hebrew Cemetery and mail it to: Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts 633 Salisbury St. Worcester, MA 01609
