    3. Unfortunately, I don't think this is just going to be a problem with ancestry.com. The problem is that once Microsoft has stopped support for the older systems, like XP, other software companies are only going to write their programs for the newer existing systems like windows 7 & windows 8. I don't use the newer version of FTM - tried it, didn't like it. I don't have my tree on ancestry. However, while using FTM in conjunction with ancestry trees may be the easiest way to function on that site, I don't believe it is a requirement. Can't you just upload a gedcom from any program to ancestry.com? In that way, you are not dependent on them. Before you get the wrong idea, I am actually not a great ancestry.com fan. While it does contain a vast amount of information, their membership fees are very high, and their search function is horrible. On top of that, there are so many transcription errors - especially with the French language databases - but they rely on their paying customers to make those corrections. However, all that said, I don't think you can blame them for a business decision that every other software company will be making at some point down the line. Technology changes very quickly. In the future, it will probably make sense for individuals to lease their computers just like businesses do. 3. I use ancestry because they have so many records available but cut my cost in half by sharing my subscription with a friend. It works for us and we both save. We have been doing this for 5 years now without any problems. 3. I really loved Mundia.com because they have the family trees that are on Ancestry.com for free. Unfortunately, they are getting rid of the website. They did not seem to understand it amounts to selling the family trees because you need a paid subscription to view what was once free. By far, the family trees are the best resource. That is even a huge part of their commercials. One problem I have with some of the Ancestry results is the pay to access results like links to Findagrave.com or some of the "obituary collection" with links that do not work. That just seems odd to me. I could understand if Ancestry.com kept saved copies on their system but it even acknowledges the link goes to an external website. One question I had for them was a search result on Google that brought me to one of the Ancestry.com pages. It appeared to be an aggregate of some data that seemed incomplete. There were no related links to it and I could not find that page from searching Ancestry.com, only from Google. He said it was a "teaser result" to presumably get people to subscribe to Ancestry.com but it has the opposite effect for me because there is absolutely no way to collaborate the information. He said it is likely generated from combined family trees but no one he could find knows. I have Family Tree Maker 2011. I had 2009 but it wouldn't allow me to generate a 10 generation vertical pedigree chart and save it as any kind of file. This actually brings us a good question. Last week I was look at my tree and I noticed some people are simply "missing." They were once there. Her parents were still there as were her children. I called Ancestry's support line and they are the nicest, friendliest people. We couldn't figure out what is wrong with it. Anyone else have any problems like that? What versions do you use?
