    3. Hi Al A family tree published in Waterville, Maine suggested, with some caution, that the Pierre Rancourt who married Sophie Marcoux might have been a son of Charles Rancourt and Catherine Pepin-Lachance. But there is no known birth of a Pierre to this couple. Yes Al, there is a birth of a son Pierre to that family but I didn't find a marriage for him. This is the second, on the topic of Pierre Rancourt, brother of Charles. You mentioned the brothers Charles and Pierre Rancourt. With so many members of families who carried identical first names, it does get confusing. But this Pierre is not the one who married Sophie Marcoux nee Pepin dite Lachance in Maine. Looking at my original post in this thread, I'll expand the picture now. The Pierre who married Marguerite Maheu had a son Louis who went to Waterville, Maine. Louis and his spouse Catherine Vachon-Pomerleau became godparents of Louis-Joseph Rancourt, a child of the younger Pierre Rancourt and Sophie Marcoux. In 1860, the younger Pierre had an elderly Charles Rancourt in his household. The fact that the elder Louis had an uncle named Charles suggests the possibility that the elderly Charles living with the younger Pierre was in fact his uncle. The younger Pierre (if actually a son of Charles Rancourt and Louise Germain) and the elder Louis would have been first cousins. This would serve as the traditional family connection for a godfather/godson relationship. For a time, they lived as very close neighbors. A family tree published in Waterville, Maine suggested, with some caution, that the Pierre Rancourt who married Sophie Marcoux might have been a son of Charles Rancourt and Catherine Pepin-Lachance. But there is no known birth of a Pierre to this couple. Fran was correct on that. And there is no known 'Louis' related to that family on either side. Besides, there is another problem. A marriage of such a Pierre would have meant he married a first cousin once removed, Sophie Marcoux nee Pepin dite Lachance. I think that is unlikely. Al Poulin

    3. Renee, Oh, my stupid error! How did I forget that? That birth data was the nub of my own question on 7 April when I began another thread "Charles Rancourt and Catherine Lachance." I should have been reviewing that one too. There is no other couple on record with those names as Fran pointed out that same day. I just have to stay open to the idea that the parents of first cousins once removed allowed their children to marry, and that such a marriage was somehow officiated by a priest or blessed after the fact. If a dispensation had been granted, it seems that there has to be some record of that in a Beauce County parish and the marriage would have been performed there. As it is, there are records of children who were born of parents with these names being baptized beginning on 20 Dec 1852 in Waterville, Maine. So there was good standing in the Catholic Church. Thank you for correcting me.
