John L. Sullivan's autobiography I was born on June 24, 1938, the Feast of St. John the Baptist in Holyoke, Massachusetts to John and Leonie (Montcalm) Sullivan. My father's ancestry is Irish; my mother's father is a descendant of Jacques Payant dit Saintonge and Marie-Louise Morin; her mother, of Jean-Baptiste Monty and Marie-Marthe Poyer dit Lapintade. My mother is connected to almost every line of the Cliche ancestry, with one notable exception: I have no direct ancestors named Cliche. Along with my two brothers and three sisters, all younger, I attended local catholic schools and Assumption College in Worcester,Massachusetts, where I earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in French Language and Literature. After seven years as a High School French Teacher, I went for further studies, obtaining a degree in Theology at the University of Louvain in Belgium. I was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Springfield on 3 July 1971. In 1983, I was sent to Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where I received a Licentiate in Canon Law in 1985. I presently serve as Presiding Judge of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of Springfield. I have had an abiding interest in genealogy as befits a distant cousin of the Honourable Jean-Jacques Saintonge and a grand nephew of Ernest-Louis Monty. I am proud to be a life member of the Associationof Cliche Families. Father John was instrumental in my learning to read and transcribe French Canadian vital records when I started my genealoty research. I would not have been able to do it without him. I never had the opportunity to meet him but I too considered him a friend.
