Helloo, Prior to the 1860 US FC the St-Jean family immigrated from the St-Pie area to the Montpelier area of Vermont, ultimately settling in Berlin, Washington, Vermont. Putting the full family together has been fraught with issues significantly due to the census records taken of the family in the first few decades of their life in the United States. The census records have been hilarious, to say the least, where the census taker is writing down what they think they are hearing. But, keeping in mind that names are being heard and not necessarily what are being spoken has allowed the family to come together. There is one, however, that eludes me. The 1860 census for John and Zoe St John provides a name, a female, name Gulide, Gielide, Geilide, "Gubde", etc., okay it makes no sense to me. The transcriber for the census data base writes Guelede, which I don't think is supported by the census taker's writing. Has anyone any idea as to what the census taker thinks is being spoken? Any French word will do if it makes sense and it need not be a name, but better if it is. There is an English name, Glade, that they might have used for their US born son, but I've never seen it used in the family. So, I nix that option for now. The census was taken in June and "Gulide" is 5 months old, making the birth in January. This name is never seen again, however, and the birth record for a child of the family is for a boy born 18 January 1860. There is no given first name for the boy. In the 1970 census, there is a boy, Nicholas, aged 9. Given the flexibility on census ages, the Jan 1860 boy could be Nicholas, but if he is indeed "nine", he would be an 1861 birth leaving plenty of time for a separate child born in 1860. Vermont is pretty well known for having good records, but, something or someone is missing, perhaps. What are you thoughts? Cheers, Kevan
After looking at the 1860 census which gives this child's gender as "Female" (and seemingly a Julie in that regard), however, the actual birth record from Montpelier dated 18 Jan 1861 does indeed give the gender as a "Male", even if unnamed, so I wonder if it might have been a son named Jules or Julien? Obviously, the child either did not live long, or had a secondary name by which he was known in life, and which leads to your guess of Nicholas. Interestingly, your Nicholas St. John died on 8 July 1922 at the Vermont State Hospital in Barre. In that record, his age is given as 62 years, 4 mos and 18 days. Also, in that record his birth is recorded as Feb 18, 1840 (sic for 1860!), a month off from the age of child in the 1860 census. So, it could have been him after all. That's my best guess. Dennis
I have seen Claude listed as Glode/etc. On Fri, Sep 21, 2018 at 11:36 AM Dennis B via Quebec-Research < [email protected]> wrote: > After looking at the 1860 census which gives this child's gender as > "Female" (and seemingly a Julie in that regard), however, the actual birth > record from Montpelier dated 18 Jan 1861 does indeed give the gender as a > "Male", even if unnamed, so I wonder if it might have been a son named > Jules or Julien?
