Could SKS explain this written notation I found when researching my Lafond ancestry; I think I understand the term ondoiement, but am curious about the "sex x" reference. Does the X mean the child's gender was unknown to the priest or the fetus was sexually undeveloped?: A burial for a child with no name sex x Burial St-Thomas (Joliette) burial 1858-09-07 Death : 1858-09-05 Ondoiement : 1858-09-05 Baptism LAFOND Subject sex x. -- -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. My understanding is that the child was of undetermined gender, and was baptized at home at time of birth. The child died on 5 Sept.1858 and was buried on 7 Sept. 1858. The parents were Severin LAFOND and Philomene MARTINEAU. Frank, If you look at the actual registry entry, it simply says a child of ... died the fifth of the current month, immediately after being baptised (ondoye representing provisional baptism to protect the soul for eternity, when survival is uncertain, or unexpected). It does not say if the child was male or female - in this instance, although un enfant is used the presumption is that it was used in the sense of 'a child' rather than signifying male child. The priest most likely would know the gender of the child and used his standard way of entering births/baptisms. Sometimes they just say a child was born to .... and if the child is named then the sex is usually determined from the name. Sometimes, some of the priests, even when the child was named, will use a format of 'baptised today name and then son or daughter of ....". My guess is that wherever you saw the connotation of sex x, just means that the sex was not recorded in the registry and so the person reporting on the findings did not know the sex of the infant. Genitals form fairly early in gestation, i.e. not last few months. A baby that would have been baptised would have been far-enough along for gender to be determined. Hope this helps.
