    1. [Q-R] Trouble with FTM

    3. A few days ago I closed my tree. Later in the day I tried to open it but I cant open it. I get the message" Failed ot open file:Rival-Bellerose+27.2_2016-02_2017-04-11(1).ftm File is in use. How can it be in use if it is closed? I have tried everything I can think of to get it to open or to close it. Nothing works. It will not even let me down load it from my backup or any where. I am getting tired of loosing my work  with FTM program. This also haponed once before on my desk top.  That time it just came back up after some time. Dont ask me why. They have a problem. There were over 40,900 records in there. 50 years of work. I sent in for help a few days ago but have received no answer or any reply whatsoever. Whats going on?  My work is piling up and I cant do anything about it. HELP.  Has anyone else had this problem and how was it corrected.

    3. I think Window 10 is the big problem. I went back to my old computer that still has my FTM and windows 7 and I was able to do all my back ups. Roch Thanks. It dident work.

    3. Some web pages suggest using process explorer to find the busy file. If you don't know where it is, you can type procexp.exe wherever windows 10 allows you to enter a file to run. then: To successfully delete a locked file, you will need to identify the process which has locked the file. You need to exit the process first and then delete the file. To know which process has locked a file you need a tool such as Microsoft Sysinternals' Process Explorer <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx> (PE). Once you have PE installed ... 1. Click the Find menu, and choose Find Handle or DLL ... 2. Type the file name (name of the file which is locked by some process.) 3. After typing the search phrase, click the Search button also you can directly right-click the family tree make file and select "Kill Process Tree" hopefully it'll kill all the connections.     3. Suggest you contact Microsoft support. Tell them that you have a file that is reporting open when it is not open and the FTM folks cannot figure out what the problem is. MS should be able to walk you through closing the processes that are creating the issue. Not sure how MS support works now (a decade + out of the support business) but I know Apple will do an online support chat and help you with issues. Mary L.     3. Apologies, if some of my comments may have already been addressed or things that you have already considered and rejected. Which version of FTM are you using? I have just ordered FTM2017 as an update to my v2010. I have never had problems with updating in the past and have been an FTM user since they first came out with the program. The thought of losing data is not appealing. While my tree is on Ancestry, I have many more notes in my FTM program than will upload onto Ancestry. You may have already tried some of these tricks • Turn off your computer and then on again. Or perform a restart. • If you do not have a routine 'cleaning' procedure, you may have a lot of excess extraneous files, registry errors and fragmented HD that can slow things down and eventually create small glitches. • You might check your computer system against the software requirements, if your computer is older it's maximum may be close to the minimum requirements for the software. If you are using Win10, it is a hog when it comes to requirements and running. This could cause glitches with any software. Also depending what other programs are loaded on your computer they could be interfering, even your internet security software. The size of you FTM file (50years) may also be taxing your system. • I have an older computer which is only used for genealogy with Win 7 + FTM2010 and the bigger my files the more subtle loading problems I have noticed. Hi Henry, I have had the same problem with FTM 2014 edition... it would not open I was close to tears, as my database has over 380,000 individuals in it .... and, I would hate to lose it Finally, I opened the Documents Folder where the database is .... and thought, I would try to open it from there I right-clicked on the File and the prompt box dropped.... There were over 40,900 records in there. 50 years of work. I sent in for help a few days ago but have received no answer or any reply whatsoever. Whats going on? My work is piling up and I cant do anything about it. HELP.     3. I had trouble with my old FTM version 2005 and I lost a whole bunch of people. I was distraught but the next time that I opened my file, they came back and others were missing. This kept happening. I lost a whole file which had much early info on it and that was really upsetting. Then somehow I found it again but was afraid to close the file in case it disappeared again. I  contacted FTM and they told me that my FTM was not compatible with Windows 7. So I  said that it has been compatible for over 10 years. They told me I must buy 2017 version. So  I  did and I hate it. However, I discovered that the problem really was that I was down to abt 1 GB of free space on my drive so there was not enough space for the computer to work properly. I fixed that and I am still  using old computer and  old version of FTM.     3. Hi! Peggy, my problem with FTM Version 16, is that I can’t back it up anymore since I installed Window 10.     2. Sorry you hav had so much trouble. I tried your fix but it dident work. FTM work for 2 hours trying to figure out what to do . I started out with one tree that would not load now i have two. Lots  of help. The poor guy really tried but had no idea what to do. I am using MS 10 and have FTM 2017. I like it when its working but to many bugs. I dont know  where to go from here. I could delete FTM and reinstall it and down load from Ancestry but how long would it work before I loose it again.?????     3. 1. rename and direct your database to a completely different file folder (Pay attention to WHERE it goes to then RESTART your computer...... ) *** OPEN the software and direct it to open the database (GEDCOM) Personally, I do not rely on the latest backup to be the latest and most complete version of my extended family tree. Often I am interrupted and my train of thought goes off-rail or I am lead along another branch.
