Recently someone had a question about name changes to towns in New France...see link http://www.acadian-home.org/places-yesterday-today.html Bonjour, Michael Morin mmorin.il.1950@gmail.com
According to the Parish and town guide pre 1901, the Church of Ste-Famille established in 1668 was in the town of Boucherville in the county of Chambly. Good luck Renee -----Original Message----- From: quebec-research-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:quebec-research-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of M. A. Beldin Sent: March-30-14 4:42 PM To: QUEBEC-RESEARCH@rootsweb.com Subject: [Q-R] Confusion with Canadian place names If a person was baptized or married in 1840 in Sainte-Famille de Boucherville, what would the name of the place be? I try to maintain the names of the places as they were when my family members lived there but I don't understand Canadian place naming policies and I am finding US sources are way off or I have not found the right place to learn the correct info. I read in Wikipedia the explanation that Sainte-Famille de Boucherville was an actual place--they had land which was next to and then included the village of Boucherville: from wikipedia: The municipality of the parish Sainte-Famille de Boucherville was established in 1845. This large territory included the village of Boucherville. In 1856, Sainte-Famille de Boucherville was divided into two separate municipalities: the parish Sainte-Famille de Boucherville and the village of Boucherville FamilySearch standardizes Boucherville as Boucherville, Chambly, Quebec, Canada. According to wikipedia, or google, Boucherville and Chambly are both towns so how can Boucherville be a part of Chambly and I doubt it was in 1840 even if it is today. Boucherville is a part of the region of Montérégie and the urban agglomeration (whatever that means-- County???) of Longeuil. But, all of this happened well after 1840. So, where do I find the name of a place prior to civil changes that seemed to have taken place mostly in the middle to late 20th century? Thanks Margie in Washington State
Hi I'm doing research into the above couple who were married on the 23rd November 1830 who were both living in the parish of Bourcherville, Quebec. Edouard's parents were Noel BELAN and Therese BORDALONE from Lapointe in the Tremble district of Quebec. Marie Anne HUET dit DULUDES parentes were Jean Baptiste HUET dit DULUDE and Marie Desanges GILIMEAN/Gelinot. Edouard and Marie Ann were married in the St. Antoine de Pade Cathedrale Longueil. We have found the baptism of their daughter Harriet (aka Selian) Belan in Quebec in 1831. I have a copy of the baptismal certificate from the Drouin records but cannot make it out really. Would like to know more about the family in Quebec and if possible find out when they arrived from France. I have all the information on Selina who first married a Ziba BENWAY ( who was Canadian also/Catholic) then Selina/Harriet married Samuel DENNY/DENIS in Clayton NY where she died in May 1914. She had 4 children two to her first marriage and two to her second. Any help finding more on this family would be great. Many thanks Dianna from Australia.

There is also the possibility that they married earlier in a non-Catholic setting and had the marriage blessed years later. Another thought is that the priest or transcriber made a glaring error in the year of the marriage. From the marriage of his parents Antonio had to have been born no later than 1911. Both parents were of major age at their marriage in 1881. According to the 1901 census, Antonio was born 7 Mar 1896. http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/View.jsp?id=79391&highlight=13&desc=1901+Census+of+Canada+page+containing+Hormidas+Leblanc at genealogiequebec: Marriage Registration 1949: Antonio, celebetaire, b 7 Mar 1896, m Luce, Veuve b 10 Feb 1901. " 1943 marriage: Bernadette Leblanc age 18 at 1943 marriage =b 1925 - no parents mentioned on the registration. So the mystery deepens. You need some great-great aunts & uncles to help find out "the rest of the story". Hi Renee, Thank you for your informations. You have definitively notice the marriage date of Antonio and Lucie (1949) was AFTER the marriage date of their daughter Bernadette (1943). Maybe when we could read the original register in Longueuil on the 26 Feb. 1949 we could understand what is the status of Antonio and Lucie regarding Bernadette. The only possible explanation I could think of the real family association between Antonio and Lucie being the real parents to Bernadette, is if they had Bernadette out of wedlock and that after Lucie being a widow, they married together and recognize Bernadette as being their official daughter. Again, it would be interesting to read the register at Bernadette marriage in Longueuil on July 3rd 1943. Is that possible? That's Companies, plural, Dick. Compagnies Franches de la Marine. And the answer's yes. There were. These companies of infantry were around for nearly a century, all over the world, attached to the French Marine Royale, and deployed as needed on land or at sea. Google Books is a good place to start your search.
