    1. [Q-R] Vase thefts persist at Delaware cemeteries
    2. When Sherrie Saponaro visited the graves of deceased family members Sunday in Silverbrook Cemetery, the first thing she noticed was a large number of bronze memorial vases were missing, including three belonging to her relatives. "I visited on Palm Sunday and they were there," Saponaro said. "But on Sunday, all the vases in the entire section were gone." According to state police, sometime between noon April 15 and noon April 17, someone entered the property and removed about 100 bronze memorial vases from the 116-year-old cemetery, situated between Lancaster Avenue and DuPont Road near Elsmere. Gracelawn Memorial Park near New Castle was also hit this month when 160 memorial vases were stolen sometime between 4:50 p.m. and 6 p.m. April 11, said Sgt. Paul Shavack, of the state police. When troopers investigated that incident, they found that the thieves cut a hole in the chain link fence to enter near the Minquadale side of the 82-acre memorial park. "They wiped out a 40-yard-long area near the fenceline and the roadway," Lee Hagenbach, the memorial park's executive director said. "Somebody took their time and carried the vases 60 feet back through the fence." The problem is a continuing one for cemeteries in Delaware. Between November and December of last year, a total of 600 vases were reported stolen from local cemeteries, including about 75 from Cathedral Cemetery at 2400 Lancaster Ave., 300 from Silverbrook, 75 from the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Pencader, 50 from Gracelawn and nearly 100 vases from All Saints Cemetery at 6001 Kirkwood Highway in Milltown. At Silverbook, Saponaro said the thieves stole her grandparents' vases and a vase belonging to her aunt. All that was left on Easter Sunday were holes left in the flat bronze markers where the vases used to be. The graves site of Sherrie Saponaro’s aunt in Silverbrook Cemetery is missing a bronze vase. Over 300 hundred vases on grave sites have been stolen from the cemetery starting last Thanksgiving, with the bulk of the theft last week. Other cemeteries in the area are experiencing theft of the vase that can be melted down for profit. The bronze 11-inch tall vases weigh about 7 pounds each and range in price from $100 to more than $200, depending on the customization, said Claudia Parker, the cemetery's family services coordinator. The thieves are likely selling them as scrap metal and getting much less for them. Their worth to a metal recycler is only about $2.15 per pound, according to Scott Sherr, of Delaware State Recycling on Bowers Street in Wilmington. "Copper prices are down, but not down far enough to stop these thieves," he said. Silverbrook's Parker said a visitor to the cemetery last week saw a number of the vases lying on the ground together in one section and questioned why they had been pulled up. When she checked, Parker discovered scores more had been taken and alerted police. "They were probably going to come back and get these," she said. "Workers having lunch reported hearing dirt bikes about that time, but thought they were on the railroad tracks behind the cemetery. I was out there earlier, and it wasn't like that." The 100-acre family-owned cemetery, established in 1898, had been vandalized five months ago around Thanksgiving, when about 300 bronze vases were reported missing. Cathie McCloskey, of Mill Creek, said she first noticed the vases missing from her grandparents and great-grandparents' graves around Christmas. "There were all these empty rows, row after row, with vases missing," she said. "It gets my Mom really upset to see it like that because her parents and grandparents are buried at Silverbrook. We feel like we've been victimized twice, because we have to pay to replace the vases or recap them." Fifth-generation Silverbrook Cemetery owner Paul White III said everyone assumes that it's the cemetery's responsibility to cover the thefts through the perpetual care fee. "Perpetual care covers grass cutting, snow removal, trees down, but doesn't cover theft," White said. "Every time somebody purchases a grave stone or mausoleum, we tell them to insure it on their homeowners insurance. It's your property on cemetery property." Families victimized by these thefts are left with few options other than bearing the cost of replacement themselves. If families can't afford to spend the few hundred dollars to replace the bronze vases, a bronze-colored plastic vase can be purchased for $14, Parker said. Another option being considered is to epoxy the vase cap to cover the hole and prevent it from being pulled off. "It's really sad," Parker said. "You talk to some of these families who are in tears. I feel like that sometimes because I know what it means to the families." A memorial vase is seen at Gracelawn Memorial Park. (Photo: Gary Emeigh/The News Journal ) Gracelawn and Silverbrook officials are each investigating the possibility of installing surveillance cameras to stop the thefts, which they acknowledged would be a costly venture. After 120 bronze flower vases were stolen in early 2011 from Gracelawn, the memorial park had gates installed and have had security at the cemetery on weekends and evenings. This latest theft was the first time anyone cut a hole in the fence to steal vases, Hagenbach said. "It's disheartening for these families to come out to find their vases stolen," he said. "I feel bad for the families." White said both he and Hagenbach have visited "every scrap yard in the area" showing the metal recycling dealers what the bronze vases look like and asking them not to accept any should they show up to be recycled. "We've been doing our due diligence," White said. "Whether or not they accept them, I can't guarantee." Shavack said investigators have seen through past investigations that the thieves typically cut up the vases and mix them with other metals until they are unrecognizable before taking them to dealers. "If we get leads, we'll follow up," Shavack said. "But these items are turned around quickly. People should report suspicious activity in or near the cemetery. These vases are heavy and it's going to take several trips to get them to a vehicle." Detectives have been in contact with in-state metal recyclers, but have to depend on law enforcement in neighboring states to investigate the cases for them in their respective states. Police so far have no leads on either of the most recent cases. "The price of scrap metal is minimal, but the loss to these victims is immeasurable," Shavack said. "It used to be a nice thing to go to the cemetery," McCloskey said. "It's just a testament to the times that people are desperate and no regard for other people's belongings." 1. [Q-R] 15 veteran cemetery markers found roadside
    2. 15 veteran cemetery markers found roadside Origins of 15 bronze medallions unknown ZANESVILLE — When Bobby Kimes was picking up empty soda cans with his daughter Elizabeth last Friday, he never expected to find what he did. Thrown on the side of Crock Road in southwestern Muskingum County were 15 bronze cemetery markers, the kind used to mark the graves of armed forces veterans. “We were just out walking and we came across them, covered in leaves and dirt,” Kimes said. Kimes then examined the medallions, noticing some were decorated with World War I, Gulf War and Vietnam War inscriptions. Others had their inscriptions ground off, he said, but most remained in good condition. To return the markers to their rightful owners, Kimes immediately called the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office. “It’s just the right thing to do,” he said. Deputy Craig Swingle, the officer who responded to the call, wrote in his report that the stars could have been stolen from a nearby cemetery, but no local cemeteries had reported stolen medallions. Kimes thinks the possible theft was an attempt to sell scrap metal that was abandoned. The markers might have been left by the side of the road because any effort made to scrap the metal would have come up dry, Perry Scrap Yard office manager Jenny Eachus said. The Ohio Revised Code mandates that “grave markers, sculptures, plaques, and vases made out of metal, the appearance of which suggests that the articles have been obtained from a cemetery” be regarded as a special purchase article in the sale of scrap metal. This would require the seller to present a letter of permission from the markers’ original owners before offering them to a scrapyard. Any scrapyard that would accept such an item without the letter could be charged with a fifth-degree felony. “There’s no way we would even look at them,” Eachus said. “If they don’t have a permission slip, we will not take them.” Even if the would-be scrapper was able to sneak the medallions past the scrapyard regulations, Eachus said they wouldn’t make much money from them. Bronze scrap metal is trading at $1.11 per pound, according to the Global Scrap Register, and the medallions are each less than a pound. The case is still considered open, and the markers are being held as evidence until authorities can determine where they came from. “We just have to find out where they belong,” Kimes said. _arumer@zanesvilletimesrecorder.com_ (mailto:arumer@zanesvilletimesrecorder.com) 740-450-6758

I can't find a death record for this Emilie on ancestry.ca. Does anyone have access to another data base that might provide this information? 1. [Q-R] Headstones Vandalized at Historic Linn County Cemetery
    2. Headstones Vandalized at Historic Linn County Cemetery CENTRAL CITY, Iowa - The recent vandalism of dozens of headstones here at Oak Hill Cemetery in Central City has been the talk of the town lately, both because of the age of the culprits, and the age of the headstones that were knocked over. The Linn County Sheriff's Office said the vandalism happened on April 12th. Approximately 60 headstones were knocked over or torn out of the ground completely, an estimated $3,000 in damage. They say three children, ages 6 and 7, confessed to the crime. Many of the headstones are engraved with death dates from the mid 1800's. Some are so weather-worn you can no longer read them. Mary Somers, who has relatives buried there, was relieved to see their graves were untouched. "My maiden name is Shakespear, and this is the Shakespear lot right here," said Somers, pointing to three small headstones. "These were my grandparents, Hiram and Mary." Somers has seen Oak Hill Cemetery vandalized before, and was disappointed to hear that it happened again. "It makes me wonder who would do such things, or why," Somers explained. "I wonder what benefit somebody gets from doing something like that." Despite the vandalism being noteworthy enough to make the front page of the local newspaper, the cemetery's board of trustees declined to comment on-camera about it, saying only that they're working to repair the damage as soon as possible. The Linn County Sheriff's Office said the board of trustees for the cemetery is working with the parents of the children, and no charges will be filed.

Ontario police set up a hidden camera at Mansfield Memorial Park Cemetery after receiving complaints from the parents of Hayden "Tank" Cole Sheridan, who passed away in 2007 at the age of 14 months. Hayden's parents told police someone had been stealing toys and solar night lights from their son's grave since his burial. On April 19, the thief captured by the police camera was recorded stealing a stuffed duck from the boy's grave approximately 4-5 hours after it was placed there by the parents. 1. [Q-R] Researchers seek info on fallen Canadians
    2. Researchers seek info on fallen Canadians Since 1991, every Christmas Eve, the children of Holten, Netherlands, light candles to place on the gravestones of the fallen Canadians buried in the Holten Canadian War Cemetery for giving their lives to protect their town. "What they do every Christmas Eve, they don't understand that's a service to our country ... they see it as a sacred duty," said Mike Muntain, lead researcher for A Face for Every Name. A Face for Every Name is a project to connect pictures and biographies to each Canadian buried at the Dutch cemetery. The cemetery is compiling a database of the fallen men and placing the information at the gravestones. The cemetery is the resting place for 1,355 Canadians who died liberating the Dutch during the Second World War. Nearly all of the men died in the last stages of the war. Twenty of the 62 who were from Saskatchewan have been tracked down already, but Muntain's group is reaching out to the province for more information on each man. "Any information, no matter how small, is important," Muntain said. The project began in Kingston, Ont., when Muntain and Peter Gower, also a researcher on the Princess of Wales Own Regiment, were asked to track down information and pictures of five Canadians who were from Kingston. From there, the search expanded to finding information about all of the Canadians buried in Holten. At the beginning of the search, Muntain thought he would only receive information from obituaries, but people have sent more than he expected. He has received war diaries, letters sent home from soldiers, a family-compiled book on one soldier and photos of children with their fathers on leave. He said the research has been a "roller-coaster of emotions." Muntain, who is originally from Regina, has his own connection to the war - his grandfather served in the Regina Rifle Regiment. About 100 Canadians have been found in the past two months. Muntain said he wants to keep going until every lead is exhausted. "How can you not, when you see what they're doing for our boys?" he said. 1. [Q-R] Bones being washed out into ocean at Cape Breton cemetery
    2. Bones being washed out into ocean at Cape Breton cemetery <FIGCAPTION>Human bones are exposed along the coast of Cape Breton Island due to erosion at coastal cemetery in this undated handout photo. The oldest grave, which has been moved back three times, is from 1878. Handou Bones in a cemetery on the coast of Cape Breton Island are being unearthed due to erosion and the caretaker says there is little he can do to protect the graves. This year is particularly bad due to a lot of rain and run-off, Hector Murphy said in an interview Tuesday from his home in Ingonish, N.S. "It happens every spring. The spring is the worst time, but it can happen any time," he said. He said he learned about the recent erosion on Friday and between Monday and Tuesday, he had already seen changes in the cemetery as more bones were unearthed. With more rain expected this week, Murphy expects the situation to only worsen. The oldest grave has been moved back three times, about 30 to 40 feet each time, and dates from 1878, he said. The graves may be from people who died in a shipwreck or a plague, although records for the graves were destroyed in a church fire. The United Church of Canada owns the property, but Rev. Margaret Wood told CTV that while the local congregation has a small cemetery trust fund, it doesn't cover erosion. Murphy said he has been trying to get funding to put armour stones along the edge of the cliff to prevent the bones from going over and into the ocean, but so far has only received a commitment from their municipal government. That funding will only come through if the provincial and federal government also help out.

    3. Hello Mary, and all, Sébastien PROVENCHER and Marguerite MANCHON (real name is MARCHON) contracted to marry on January 22, 1663 in front of notary Louis Laurent du PORTAL, in Cap de la Madeleine. They were probably married shortly thereafter in Cap de la Madeleine but the record went the same way all the other early records for that parish went, and vanished. Don't go looking for the actual marriage contract. It too has disappeared. Though a fair bit of sleuthing I was able to find a mention of it in an inventory drawn up by notary Cusson, on April 26, 1691. Although Cusson lists the contract in the inventory, he does not copy its actual content. As a result the name of both Sébastien's and Marguerite's parents is unknown. Recent research by myself and by the Provencher Family Association point to Marguerite and Sébastien having been related. If we are correct, Marguerite's paternal grand-mother was in fact a PROVENCHER. I will refrain from providing further details as this research is on-going and our findings remain conjectural. 3. Another Emilie question, I located an Emilie Rivard Bellefeuille buried in the Notre Dame des Neiges cemetery in Montreal in 1894-03-18 with the rest of my ancestors. I can't find a death record for this Emilie on ancestry.ca. Does anyone have access to another data base that might provide this information? And, does anyone know if the cemetery offers any type of genealogy information on deceased persons if I were to contact them? The fact that Emilie was said to be a widow in the 1861 census is not to be taken as a fact that she had married as it can just have been written because she was living with a son (people were discreet about illegitimate offsprings...). > >The father cited in Leon's marriage, Augustin Laroche, should be the one who was married with Marguerite Marchand living in Maskinonge, although he was still living in 1858 (he is said «defunt» in Leon's marriage).
