    3. Currently, there is no way to make corrections to indexes. Many people (for several years) have requested a feature to allow user corrections and additions. FamilySearch is keenly aware of this need and it is on their drawing boards (along with "indexing-on-the-fly"). Some day those features will make it into the FamilySearch system. I keep a list of the needed corrections I find, and when that feature appears I plan to go make the changes. 1. Re: [Q-R] Louis Foley, Louis Poulin, Poulin Association
    2. Al Poulin
    3. Patricia, I'm taking the liberty of modifying the Subject Line, hoping it maintains continuity with its original. We'll see. Wow, Whoa! Are you saying that a descendant of Louis Foley received a pension? If so, I suspect that Louis, for U.S. Government purposes, used the name Foley as his most authentic surname. This is regardless of the name of his guardian. Louis may finally have gone by what everybody in the parish informally "knew" to be his father's name, regardless of any records written by the priests and any notaires. I would look for any baptismal or other record of an "inconnu" born in the right place at the right time, whose godparents may have included a Joseph Poulin, or indeed, any Poulin. I would look for any records involving the name Foley, and any variants, in the several decades before and after 1800. And what is known about Joseph Poulin, his family? Was there a marriage contract for Louis and M.-Charlotte Gonthier? Where there Irish families in the area? 3. I was really hoping someone would come up with a good resource for searching Poulin, as I have a mystery man. Louis Poulin was born about 1802 in Quebec and married Marie-Charlotte Gonthier 9 Nov 1819 in St. Charles, Bellechasse, Quebec as Louis blank. His tuteur (guardian) was present and listed as Joseph Poulin. I found him in my great-grandfather John Baptist Rousseau's Civil War pension papers as Louis Foley, but do not know if he was born a Foley. I found Louis & Charlotte listed as Procher in the 1851 census in Quebec city, but the name is quite clear as Poulin. They are on image 1557/13774 or p 776, with Angele 24, Nazaire 16, Guillaume 14, and Rose 10. Somewhere in the mists of ancient research, I found Charlotte dying 8 Oct 1850 somewhere in Quebec province. I suspect she may have died in Quebec city. The family seems to have crossed the border in 1853 according to the 1860 US census where his son Nazaire Poulin is found in Brown County, Wisconsin (Bellevue) as John Foley. Is anyone familiar with this family? Folks like this drive me crazy. Patricia

    3. Hello Harriet, You may be able to find one. I bought my copy new in September 2002 in the book store at 'Maison de nos Aïeux' run by 'Fondation François Lamy' on L'Ile d'Orleans. I paid $5.00. Earlier that year, I saw it listed by Serge Duhamel, a used book vendor, but when I tried to order it for $10.00, it had already been sold. 187. (POULIN). «350e Anniversaire des familles Poulin (Poulain-Poulin, Normandie). Rassemblement: Sainte-Anne de Beaupré, 12 août 1989». (Q), 1989. 28 p. (28 cm). Illustrations et armoiries. I do not recall seeing it listed since then. Duhamel sends catalogs in e-mail five or six times a year. His current website is: http://www.ovieuxbouquins.com/ You might also try: Rolland Descheneaux apparently has no website. Try at: Rolland Descheneaux <lebizz@videotron.ca> http://bibliopolis.net/ http://www.canterburybooks.com/ http://www.abebooks.com/ By the way, I see Joseph-Philippe Poulin's book listed about once a year or so. 3. Hello Joyce, Hello Joyce, I fully concur with Suzanne's comments. Works such as Tanguay's dictionary were the cat's meow way back when it was practically impossible for family historians to have access to original records. That is no longer the case. The name is de Louvois, also spelled de Louvoy, was never deLouvais. He is called Jean de Louvois on his mariage record. And she, Geneviève Greslon. But the last "o" is very open and I can see why Tanguay (or, more likely, one of the persons doing the actual records reading for him) thought they saw an "a". D'Aragon (Daragon or more often Dragon) was his war name, his "dit name" if you prefer. It reflected a place name. "D'Aragon" actually means "from Aragon". He was, in fact, from Picherende, in Auvergne. Cheers, Mona On 14-06-01 8:26 PM, Joyce Crete wrote: > Hi Linnie or anyone else with access to PRDH who wouldn't mind looking up > to see if more information than what Linnie sent me > many years ago as follows: > > per PRDH from Linnie 7/03 > and MARIE LOUISE LOUVOIS DARAGON R-6778 > Father : JEAN BAPTISTE LOUVOIS DARAGON R-7494 > Mother : GENEVIEVE GRESLON LAVIOLETTE FONTAINE R-7495 > ================ > In Tanguay, Volume III, Page 324. her baptism date there is July 6th, 1709. > Once again Tanguay shows the spelling of the name as DeLouvais which became > Dragon in 1708. 3. Hi Linnie or anyone else with access to PRDH who wouldn't mind looking up to see if more information than what Linnie sent me many years ago as follows: per PRDH from Linnie 7/03 and MARIE LOUISE LOUVOIS DARAGON R-6778 Father : JEAN BAPTISTE LOUVOIS DARAGON R-7494 Mother : GENEVIEVE GRESLON LAVIOLETTE FONTAINE R-7495 ================ In Tanguay, Volume III, Page 324. her baptism date there is July 6th, 1709. Once again Tanguay shows the spelling of the name as DeLouvais which became Dragon in 1708. This appears reasonable to me. Many surnames changed in French culture depending on where the recording of the names were because of the French accent and sometimes English recorders attempting to write them down as they were said. I have found at least 9 variations on the Bedard surname in my travels. Tanguay could have used a Brothers Keeper program and a computer to consolidate his files. ================ I have no further info on this couple, but I am using what I found in the PRDH. It's possible that Drouin (RD) saw D'Aragon and assumed it was Quay dit D'Aragon. That "dit" name is used with both surnames. Don't know what else to tell you about this. It's important to keep historical perspective when working with published shources. Tanguay, L’Abbé C, Dictionnaire Généalogique des Familles Canadiennes was reprinted by Éditions Élysée in 1975 in seven volumes, but originally published between 1871-1890. I'm sure he did not use "Brothers Keeper" or any other computer program, nor did the publishers in 1975. Always keep in mind that his ground-breaking work has been corrected and revised and supplemented hundreds of times and that you must always check a more modern source, such as PRDH, instead of trusting his books. It's best not to lose time and energy by relying on his valuable but no longer fully acceptable research. Suzanne

    3. Back to the Subject Line. Selma and Harriet were asking. Some years ago, there was an Association des familles Poulin. But since at least the mid-1990s, the group seems to be defunct. The association is still listed at the website of Fédération des associations de familles du Québec (FAFQ), formerly known as La Fédération des familles souches du Québec, but I've never seen a website at this listing. Contact the Federation at: http://www.ffsq.qc.ca/ For the occasion of a 300th year anniversary celebration at Ste.-Anne-de-Beaupré and at Québec on 6 Aug 1939, Joseph-Philippe Poulin published his "Troisième Centenaire de la Famille Poulin au Canada 1639 - 1939," 253 pages. With great detail, the book's organization is a bit strange. It reveals story lines as principal members of the family migrated and settled in different parishes through the years. Consequently, tracking descendency or ascendency along specific lines requires leafing through text chapters and sections. in 1989, l'Association des familles Poulin produced a 28-page booklet, " 350e Anniversaire des familles Poulin, Rassemblement: Sainte-Anne de Beaupré 12 Aout 1989." One page gives this information. The association was incorporated on 22 October 1986 with a purpose of organizing a reunion at Beauce County's observance of its 250 years in 1897. The association's mailing address was: Association des Familles Poulin Inc.
