"and they all seemed to remain in Quebec..." There is a great new book that chronicles this effort and the assistance the habitants to rebels who sought to liberate the Richelieu Valley and ultimately Quebec. The book is "The Battle for the Fourteenth Colony" by Mark Anderson. University Press of New England. -- "Mary Beth" Mary Elizabeth Mylott-Fasano mbmylott@gmail.com
This is the first trip of the year thanks to two more surgeries, and this is kind of a test to see how the body reacts. Got up at 4AM and pulled out of the driveway at 4:27AM @ 60F. One thing I have to tell you concerning this trip, I had planned over a week ago to head to Madison County, N.Y. This was before the tornado came through the area and Madison County was one of the severest hit areas. So, I had no idea what I would find.................. Once in the area according to maps the first 6 cemeteries weren't there. These are also smaller rural area cemeteries. They have either been moved or so deeply buried in the woods I could not find them. I also was encountering closed roads. Two lane roads that were only one lane due to trees and poles laying all over the place. They said on TV this area was like a War Zone and that was a good way to describe it. Seems all the crews were doing at this time was clear a path to open roads and let everything lay where it rests for now. I saw house covered in trees and I'm sure for years to come you could get all the free fire wood you want from this area. I did talk to one farmer in the area and he said he had over 100 trees down on his property alone. I finally found a coffee shop and stopped there for a cup and to reorganize this trip to see where I could get to. Finally at 8:07AM I made it to Moscow Hill Cemetery on Rt 74, Madison County. Town of Brookfield. The stone wall is knocked down and enormous trees down all over the small cemetery. I looked in all the over turned trees, in their root systems but luckily found no graves, bones. I did take a couple photos just to show the devastation of the area cemeteries. And I'm sure cemeteries will be the last priority and far as getting back to normalcy. Isaac Cheesbro died Dec 16, 1846. Aaron Landfais died Feb 21, 1839 age 66 years. Well, some interesting things show up in Ancestry's Family Trees - not necessarily accurate though as indicated by the entry for Joseph Abraham Desforges. This entry (for family tree of Michael Wayne Simoneaux Sr.) shows: Joseph Abraham Desforges - Birth 24 FEB 1821 in St Jean Baptiste, Rouville, Quebec, Canada; Death JUL 1860 in Hagnaby, Lincolnshire, England; Spouse: Marie Philomene Therrien - Birth 1838 in Québec; Death 9 Jul 1907 in Notre-Dame-de-Stanbridge, Brome-Missisquoi, Quebec, Canada. This Tree site goes on to show that this couple had 10 children between the years 1860 and 1879 - interesting! I wonder how many people copied that incorrect info? From what I saw, quite a few. The Desforges Family Tree show the same death info for Abraham as noted above, that there were 6 Desforges children born after Abraham's death. If you find your ancestors in the index and you would like to know what they did, I'm happy to tell you. However, the book "Quebec During the American Invasion 1775-1776," which is the English translation of the BTW journal written in 1776, is very interesting and well worth the money. Jesse - The journal states "Laurent Audet dit Lapointe and Louis Colombe went to the rebels' (Americans') camp this winter and always praised their actions. They played a significant role in last fall's rebellion. At that time, they stood guard in front of the church and at Trou St Patry. They convinced the habitants to follow their example, fearing, so they claimed, that the town's garrison would come to burn their parish." Augustin Blais (1749-p1804), son of Augustin, is simply noted as a "bad subject" by the British (which means he supported the Americans.) The criminal damage in the Falls Road area was reported at around 7.20am on Friday. Police said enquiries are ongoing at this time. SDLP MLA for West Belfast Alex Attwood has said that the incident was offensive and upsetting for local people. "It is very upsetting for local people to see the statue damaged in this way and is incredibly offensive that anyone would behave in this way," he commented. "It seems likely that this was an attempt to steal the statue and given the time of year, it is questionable where it might have ended up. "This is completely irresponsible action, and I would encourage those of influence in the community to discourage this kind of behaviour. Anyone with any information should contact the PSNI."
DODGE COUNTY, Wis. —Dodge County officials said two cemetery thefts have taken place within the last week. Last week, Oakwood Cemetery in Beaver Dam reported a similar theft of markers from grave sites. Authorities said each marker costs about $35 to replace, but is only worth a few dollars on the scrap market. Dodge County Sheriff Patricia Ninmann said 78 markers in all have been stolen in the past week. "Local scrap yards and recycling businesses have been contacted," she said. "Also, a state crime alert has been disseminated to all law enforcement agencies." Ninmann said deputies have several people of interest that have been identified, but anyone with information is asked to call Detective Riessmann at 920-386-3726. Fletcher said they've requested an increase in police patrols at Stone Hill Cemetery and may install surveillance cameras in the near future.
