UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Vandalism to a southern Illinois cemetery has volunteers ready to roll up their sleeves to make things right again, and much of the effort involves the Union County highway department. Workers at the Union County Highway Department plan to donate a Saturday or two to right a wrong done by vandals in a rural cemetery. At the progress cemetery several tombstones have been toppled. This isn't the first time the graveyard has been targeted, but Engineer Kevin Grammar says it may be the most damage vandals have ever done. "We've had some smaller stones that we've been able to put back up with manpower in the past," Highway Engineer Kevin Grammar said. "But these particular stones are going to require equipment to put them back in place." Grammer says some of the stones weigh as much as 4,000 pounds. That's why he recently went to the county commissioners to ask for permission to use county equipment and fuel to help the volunteers lift the stones. Two monument companies plan to donate their expertise to help re-set the stones. Grammer says he's not exactly sure when this will happen, as they have to work around the monument companies' schedule. Soon, those stones will be back up, honoring the memory of those resting in peace in progress cemetery.
Three men from Maine are accused of digging up their dead relatives and reburying them in a family plot in another cemetery. Kevin Lewis, his brother and uncle allegedly dug up the ashes of Lewis' father and brother from Steep Falls Cemetery in Standish and transported them to their family plot in Maple Hill Cemetery in Limington last fall. Cumberland County police found out about the alleged grave transfer this month when one of the deceased's former girlfriends complained. The ashes were returned to their original burial plot on Aug. 2, Lewis, 42, said he saw nothing wrong with digging up his father, Richard W. Lewis, and his brother Richard "Trent" Lewis from their unmarked graves. "We just thought we had a right. My father's parents are there (in Limington) and it's where everybody else will be buried," he told the Press Herald. In fact, Kevin Lewis was the one who told his dead brother's ex-girlfriend about the transfer. The unnamed girlfriend was outraged because apparently she was the one who buried Richard W. Lewis when he died in 2003 as well as her ex- boyfriend when he died in 2007. Kevin Lewis said he appreciated everything the ex-girlfriend did for his family, including the $200 she used to purchase the original plot to bury his brother. The family later agreed to move the father's ashes to the same plot. "We did dig them up and move them, but she didn't pay for my father's funeral," he told the newspaper. Kevin Lewis, his surviving brother Travis Lewis, 37, and his uncle Calvin Lewis, 71, were charged with abuse of a corpse and are scheduled to appear in court Nov. 18. The law does not differentiate between bodies and ashes.
Hi Gang Waiting for a call now, to find out if I'm going to Tupper Lake, N.Y. for cemeteries this Sunday. I'll let you know when the car is packed.................if so it maybe for 3-5 days. And........................if this weekend trip gets canceled again, then its back to Rochester area again for a day. But, its now 3 weeks before I take off to Mass. for cemeteries, Webster, Mass., and Spingfield areas for cemetery searching, so if there are any more requests, you have 3 weeks left. 8 days for this trip. Repair work is being planned at a rural Union County cemetery where a number of tombstones were damaged by vandals. A report about vandalism was shared at last week's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners. The meeting was Friday morning at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro. Union County engineer Kevin Grammer said the vandalism occurred at the Progress Cemetery. The cemetery is located in the Water Valley area east of Cobden. The vandalism apparently occurred during the previous weekend. Progress is one of the many local cemeteries which is mowed by the Union County Highway Department. Grammer said that about 13 tombstones had been damaged. The commissioners approved a proposal by Grammer to move forward with plans to repair the damaged tombstones. Grammer said he would be working with another highway department employee on their own, along with local funeral home director Phil Hileman, on the repair project. The commissioners approved use of county equipment for the repair work. Some of the tombstones weigh as much as 4,000 pounds.
ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A mysterious figure seen hovering near graves at an Albuquerque cemetery, has _drawn the curiosity of hundreds_ (http://krqe.com/2014/08/12/grim-reaper-visits-albuquerque-cemetery/) , even drawing national attention. Now, the pastor of the Catholic parish in charge of the cemetery, also wants to know who the mystery man is, and what he’s up to. “Oh my God, I got the chills all over my body,” one woman gasps, as she stopped to take cell phone video of the image Sunday evening. The cloaked figure stopped traffic, and started an online frenzy. Cell phone video shows the dark figure standing still at the San Jose del el Rosario cemetery near Gibson and I-25. “I have 12 years working in this parish, and I never saw that,” explained Father Gabriel Paredes, of the San Jose Catholic Parish. Father Paredes said he too has questions about the person in the dark robe. The San Jose Catholic Church is in charge of the cemetery. “Sometimes there are people who love the witch craft or satanic rights, and they love to go to the cemeteries, it’s a place of the dead,” said Paredes. But, he added, he doesn’t have proof that the person seen Sunday was dabbling with the dark side. The mystery figure had drivers pulling over on the interstate, and pulling out their cameras. “It was weird, it was scary, it was unusual,” said Michelle Gonzales. Spotted on the eve of the Supermoon, the figure was holding a bundle of flowers. Paredes said some satanic rituals include gathering earth from cemeteries, to summon evil spirits. “It’s very bad because we have cases of people who do that, and they receive possession of the evil one by the spirit, and they need an exorcism,” said Paredes. Father Paredes isn’t jumping to conclusions though. And even though he’s drawn curiosity, it’s still unclear what the person was doing at the cemetery. Of all the witnesses posting comments online, so far no one seems to have seen the mystery man arrive at the graveyard, or leave. He was just kind of there, and then gone. Paredes said they didn’t see any damage to the cemetery. Witnesses said firefighters and police officers responded. APD told News 13 Wednesday, they cannot confirm that, since they do not have a name to reference.

A moving memorial to a much-loved dad has been banned from a churchyard – because it was sealed with a kiss. Mike Howsley’s grieving family have been ordered to remove the expensive headstone from his grave after a parish priest ruled the two Xs on the inscription was “inappropriate.” Mike’s distraught partner Janet Corless said: “The priest took exception to two little kisses and the phrase ‘sleep tight Dad.’ “I can’t believe it. It’s so callous and I’m absolutely heartbroken.” Warehouseman Mike died in January aged just 49. His family spent more than £2,000 on a headstone for his grave at St Mary’s Brownedge Church in Bamber Bridge. The monumental masons who supplied it insist the inscription was authorised by the church before it was erected. But now Janet, 52, and 19-year-old daughter Sophie have had to remove the stone, even though they claim others in the same churchyard contain similar phrases and kisses. “Mike died suddenly right in front of Sophie and me,” said a tearful Janet, of Walton-le-Dale. “It’s only seven months since it happened and it is still very raw. “The headstone we chose was beautiful and we were delighted with it when it was put on the grave. But when they told us the inscription was inappropriate and would have to go it was a complete bombshell. “I had a meeting with the priest and pleaded with him to allow it. But he seemed totally unsympathetic. He said the kisses weren’t acceptable on the headstone and neither was the phrase on the base. I couldn’t believe it and I just stormed out. I was hysterical. “Mike meant the world to us and it’s hard enough coping with our loss without having something like this making it worse. Why can’t they show some compassion?” Michelle Howe, company director at Cocker Memorials in Preston, insisted she had verbal approval from the parish priest before the stone was erected. “I don’t have anything in writing,” she said. “Sometimes we get written confirmation and sometimes it’s done with a phone call. This was over the phone. “We wouldn’t have gone ahead and made the headstone if we didn’t have approval. But it now looks like we will have to make an entirely new one because covering up the letters won’t look right. “The priest said we could have ‘sleep tight Dad,’ but on a separate piece of stone - not on the headstone. So, really, it’s just down to those two little kisses. “I’ve been round the churchyard and there are other headstones with kisses on. It seems ridiculous.” Fr George at St Mary’s commented: “We extend our deepest sympathies to Mrs Corless at this difficult time and will be working closely with the stonemason to make sure her partner’s headstone is erected correctly as soon as possible.” A spokesman for the Diocese of Salford, which includes Bamber Bridge, was unavailable for comment.
Hi Don, Jackie, Linnie and Doreen Thank you to all who responded to me. Sorry if I was not explicit in my request. I did not know who was the bride for my second Napoleon Labonte. In fact I had a previous Napoleon Labonte, son of Joseph Labonte and Emelie Fontaine who married Angélina Lavoie (1896). I thought he was the Napoleon Labonte I needed to insert in my family group. Thru certain validation with this family, I came to think the first Napoleon (Lavoie), was not the right one because of his age. It is then I found there was a 2nd Napoleon, born to Dolphis Labonte and Valerie Deneault in 1884. I found no marriage for him in my area. So I thought about asking the group about his marriage. The older Napoleon (1870) was the son of Joseph & Emilie Fontaine. The second Napoleon (1884) was the son of Dolphis & Valerie Deneault). Joseph and Dolphis were brothers (Joseph & Josephte Chartier). So both Napoleon were first cousin. I would love to have his children names if possible (Napoleon & Aurore Chaput) from Connecticut. I have lots of picture of him at home. I would try to sort them out with the other persons on each picture. Hi, I am looking for the marriage to Napoleon Labonte. Napoleon was born around Nov. 4th.1884 in Napierville from Dolphis Labonte and Valerie Deneault. Cheers Florent Coache
Parents married at St-Cyprien, Napierville on 7 October 1873 - Bride's full name is Marie Vitaline Denault, although 1911 Canada Census shows names as Dolphise and Valarie. Labonte is a popular name and first name could be entered as "Nap" or "Leon" - without a bride's name a marriage search is difficult and I don't see him in the 1911 Canada Census. There were several marriages of Labonté persons at St-Cyprien between 1904 and 1913 but I did not see anything for Napoleon.
