RAYTOWN, Mo. —A Raytown cemetery has been hit hard by thieves over the past week as people seeking metal to sell for scrap have taken hundreds of bronze vases from gravesites. < Related The thieves hit two sections of the 65-acre Mount Olivet Cemetery and may have been gathering up vases to haul away. Cemetery workers found one pile left behind in the dark on night. An initial count on the number of stolen vases approached 170, but after a more thorough check, workers said the number could reach as high as 300. What the thieves want is the copper that makes up about 90 percent of the bronze vase. The vases cost a family about $600 to $700, but the scrap value doesn't even top $20. Managers and visitors at the cemetery said they're disgusted by the thefts. "It's bad for everybody because they don't respect the dead," said visitor Richard McAfee. "A group of people found a way to steal a lot of vases made of copper, but someone else is offering the market for them to go to," said Joe Harris, director of Catholic Cemeteries. The cemeteries and police don't know who is buying the old vases. By law, scrap metal dealers need a statement on cemetery letterhead to accept a gravesite vase for salvage. Manufacturers have begun to provide cemeteries with vases made from aluminum and zinc, which have no scrap value. Anyone with information about the thefts or resale market is asked to call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

Delta Junction cemetery vandalism destroys gazebo, headstone memorials By _KTVA CBS 11 News_ (http://www.ktva.com/authors/ktva-cbs-11-news/) 2:42 PM August 20, 2014 DELTA JUNCTION , Alaska– UPDATE (3:26 p.m.): A city administrator for Delta Junction says volunteers and city staff have replaced the damaged sections of the fence. Members of the community have offered to rebuild the gazebo next week. Alaska State Troopers are looking for the driver of a maroon Ford that smashed its way through a Delta Junction cemetery Sunday, causing thousands of dollars in damage. In a Wednesday afternoon dispatch post, AST said the vehicle broke through the fence at the Rest Haven Cemetery sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. Sunday. It kept going, troopers said, destroying a wooden gazebo and driving over three headstones, destroying flower memorials and decorations. The destructive spree caused approximately $5,000 worth of damage, according to AST. While the driver has yet to be identified, troopers said the suspect vehicle is believed to be maroon, 1997-2003 Ford F-150 or Expedition. It has “ Light Force” auxiliary lights mounted on the bumper and a black bug deflector: Troopers said the lights, bug deflector and front grill of the Ford all sustained damage during the drive through the cemetery. AST said Delta Junction residents are asked to keep an eye out for a vehicle matching that description, and anyone with information can call troopers at 907-895-4800.

Two gravestones have been damaged in the Troqueer Cemetery in Dumfries. Police say the headstones were pushed over and flowers had been scattered around the graves at some point between Saturday, 16, and Sunday, 17 August. The foundations of the stones were left damages but the stones themselves were not. "It is appalling that people can carry out an act such as this in a place like a graveyard. These places are not playgrounds and people should not use them as such." – Constable Gary Adair, Police Scotland Anyone with any information which may help trace those responsible is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
There's a local cemetery attraction in Middletown known as the Dancing Jesus. It is said that if you visit the Mount Olivet Cemetery at night (which is probably illegal) and shine your cars headlights on the statue of Christ, then stare at it long enough, it will begin to shimmy and shake for you. Sam, from Middletown, wrote of his experiences with the dancing symbol of one of the world's major religions at a cemetery on Chapel Hill Road. Pull into the main driveway and you'll see its centerpiece: a life-size statue of Jesus. Sam elaborated: "The statue, when stared at long enough, begins to dance, mostly moving its outstretched hands and undulating slightly. It's a sight to see, and something you should check out. I've seen it, as have many of my friends, and always sober." Hey, sobriety is key. A reader who goes by the initials CWC also had an experience with some friends in front of the Jesus statue: "We all looked up at it, kind of laughing at the fact that people think statues dance, and then we all just stopped at the same time. It mostly seemed to move up and down slightly and move its hands from side to side a little. We didn't know what to make of it and got the hell out pretty fast. We ended up waking our friends, calling them at 2 a.m. to tell them we just saw a statue of Jesus moving. Needless to say they had their doubts, but we'll always know what we saw." And wait: Jesus doesn't just dance in Middletown. Bob tells us of another dancing Jesus statue in a cemetery, "somewhere by or in Hazlet." Here, the statue is located on top of a high gravestone, and according to Bob, "You are supposed to look at it for awhile (at night) with your car's headlights on and then after like 10 seconds, you shut them off. If you do it right, the Jesus should do a little dance or wave. I saw it and it kinda looks like it's waving to you. Whatever it's doing, it's strange." Amen to that.

William Douse & Esther Young were married New Year day 1825 in P.E.I. and had 12 children. If any one descend from that couple, there's a 2 page story in the Toronto Star today, on William born in 1800 in England, died in 1864 and his buried in a crypt in P.E.I. For a family reunion they had been told to bring whatever tools might help in opening and excavating the crypt in which the aforementioned William Douse, or at least his remains, had lain undisturbed for 150 years. He was a politician, a shipbuilder, an innkeeper, a brewer of what he called "table beer" and porter - "wholesome liquor made from pure malt and hop."
