    3. Sept 18 Grey Owl 1888-1938 naturalist, writer, was born Archie Belaney on this day at Hastings, England in 1888; died in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan 1938. Belaney has an unhappy childhood, being raised by maiden aunts and a stern grandmother, and he fantasized about the Indians he read about in boys' magazines. At age 17 he left England for Northern Ontario, where he lived with the Ojibway, taking the name Grey Owl and claiming he was the son of an Apache woman and a Scotch fur trader. In 1931, he published his first book, Men of the Last Frontier, followed by Pilgrims of the Wild (1934), The Adventures of Sajo and Her Beaver People (1935) and Tales of an Empty Cabin (1936). With his Iroquois wife Anahareo, he managed a beaver conservation program in Prince Albert National Park, and gave popular lectures on wildlife. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Sept 18,1898 - George (Ernest) Uhle ‘The Bull’: baseball: Cleveland Indians [World Series: 1920], Detroit Tigers, NY Giants, NY Yankees; died Feb 26, 1985

    1. [Q-R] Wheelock hopes to reclaim oldest cemeteries
    2. WFlem72706 via
    3. WHEELOCK, Vt. — Residents in the Northeast Kingdom town of Wheelock are hoping to get together to reclaim some of its historic cemeteries from underbrush, saplings, weeds, grass and other debris. The project in the Vermont town is in the planning stage and the selectboard is working with the cemetery commissioners. They've also gotten offers of help from volunteers. They're hoping to have the first work session Sept. 20. The town of Wheelock was chartered in 1785 and Town Clerk _Doug Reid_ (http://www.mysanantonio.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=news&s earch=1&inlineLink=1&query="Doug+Reid") said some of those cemeteries are the final resting place of Revolutionary War-era residents. The Caledonian Record (http://bit.ly/1qKFNMU) reports that a stone marker below the _Wheelock Green_ (http://www.mysanantonio.com/?controllerName=search&action=search&channel=news&search=1&inlineLink=1&query="Wheelock+Green") says, "Site of first burying place at Wheelock used as late as 1814. Two soldiers in the War of the Armed Rebellion rest here, one has a British bullet in him." Reid says the condition of the cemeteries vary with some being in "neat as a pin" while others are so overgrown and remote that it is not immediately apparent there is a cemetery at the location. Reid said it would be too expensive for the town to hire people to do the work, but members of a local church and other residents have volunteered to help.

    1. [Q-R] Selfie craze unearthed in cemetery!
    2. WFlem72706 via
    3. A SPANISH cemetery worker appears to have taken the Selfie craze to extremes by posing with an exhumed corpse. The worker, eerily only known by the name of Clemente had exhumed the corpse of a man who had died 23 years earlier, to extend the grave for the deceased’s recently departed wife. Clemente however, seeing the funny side of the event, decided to pose with the man’s body, along with the deceased’s nephew-in-law. However, he was suspended from his job, after the photo went viral and was seen by town officials in Guardamar Del Segura near Alicante. To make matters worse, he wore his official blue polo shirt emblazoned with the town’s coat of arms. A municipal representative said: “It was silliness with no justification whatsoever and we will have to take a decision.” Clemente must now wait to see whether he will be allowed to continue his job. - See more at: https://www.euroweeklynews.com/news/spanish-news/item/122783-selfie-craze-unearthed-in -cemetery#sthash.3busGnUL.dpuf

    3. Thanks Renee I also had Ernest Jeanson's marriage to Lucia Carrier. His birth is a stumper. If Henriette was indeed his mother, he would have had to be born after his brother Ernest's birth and before her death (1891 to 1893). Was he born out of wedlock or born in the states or some other town, who knows? If he was indeed born Jul 2, 1891, as the census states, then he would have had to have been adopted or the son of Jean Baptiste and who knows? Possibly a Fontaine relative? This is one I suspect I will not be able to solve. How does one enter Ernest into their database? I suspect under the parents of Jean Baptiste and Heneriette Fontaine with notations. 1. [Q-R] Region-wide graveyard ban for schoolboy yobs who wrecked headstones at Jewish ce
    2. WFlem72706 via
    3. Two baby-faced louts who wrecked headstones at a Jewish cemetery have been banned from all graveyards in Greater Manchester. The yobs, both aged 13, damaged five headstones at plots at the Jewish Cemetery on Rochdale Old Road, Higher Blackley, in June. Shocked residents witnessed the boys ‘rocking’ marble headstones from side to side before they fell and damaged surrounding graves and other headstones. But a court was told that the teenagers couldn’t give explanations for their ‘despicable, heartless and horrible’ actions to probation service officers, who interviewed them to help magistrates ahead of sentencing. The M.E.N. is prevented from identifying them because of their age. A total of five headstones, worth up to £15,000, were damaged. The court was told each individual stone was worth between £2,000 and £3,000. But Gordon Thompson, prosecuting at Manchester magistrates court, said: “I suspect cash does nothing to overcome the upset that the families of those at the grave have gone through.” The boys - one wearing his school uniform - appeared in court alongside their mothers. Both pleaded guilty to criminal damage. Both were slapped with restraining orders, which ban them from entering any graveyard or cemetery in Greater Manchester unless with an adult. The order s run for an indefinite period of time. Mr Thompson said an unrelated ‘racist and anti-semitic’ attack on June 16 saw graffiti and swastika symbols daubed on headstones at the same cemetery. He said: “We cannot say that these two boys were responsible for any graffiti. That has to be stressed.” But the court heard both teenagers were spotted by residents who live nearby jumping over a wall to the cemetery on June 21. The witnesses then heard ‘ heavy thumps’. Mr Thompson said: “The thumps were the headstones being pushed, pulled, kicked and knocked over by these lads. They heard about half a dozen large thuds each about a minute apart.” Both boys were challenged but walked off. They later boarded a bus and were identified by police and arrested. Both were said to be apologetic and remorseful. The first boy has a string of previous convictions for criminal damage and assault. He was sentenced to a nine-month supervision order and reparation work, which could see him carrying out unpaid work in the cemetery. He will also be subjected to an electronically-monitored tag for three months. The second boy, who had no previous convictions, was sentenced to a nine-month referral order with £500 compensation, which the court heard will fall to his mum to pay. More than 100 volunteers rallied round to repair the damage - and clean the unrelated graffiti - after it was discovered.

    3. VINTON — Police are investigating around two dozen damaged gravestones and statues reported over the weekend. Tim Fuchs is the caretaker of Evergreen Cemetery. He says someone told him about the vandalism early Sunday morning. “One of our local walkers came through the cemetery and noticed the stones being down. He came right down to the house and let me know. We came up here and I started counting and we had over 22 stones that were knocked over,” Fuchs said. This is the fourth time Evergreen Cemetery has been vandalized in the past 30 years. The damage comes around a week after _more than 70 sites were vandalized_ (http://www.kcrg.com/subject/news/public-safety/crime/vandals-tip-over-74-tom bstones-in-oelwein-cemetery-20140911) at Oakdale Cemetery in Oelwein. Of those, 38 were cracked or broken, including ones belonging to the Oelwein family who founded the city.

    3. It is wonderful to have access to these records. Unfortunately looking at the indexing hurts my brain. I've glanced over one where my 2nd great grand uncle is in the 1925 New York Census and there a great number of lazy mistakes. It looks like they are entered by neighborhood or something and the neighbor is the only person in the house and they transcriber ignored their name and used the surname of the previous family. I might as well submit the corrections I see and know. :) Jesse -----Original Message----- From: Fred via <quebec-research@rootsweb.com> To: QR (QR ) <quebec-research-l@rootsweb.com>; Nyclinto <nyclinto@rootsweb.com>; NyEssex (NyEssex ) <NyEssex-L@rootsweb.com>; NySuffol-l <NySuffol-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Sep 15, 2014 11:16 am Subject: [Q-R] To sign up for free access to some Ancestry NY records. http://www.archives.nysed.gov/a/research/res_ancestry.shtml Regards, Unc ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~For the list web page, goto: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~unclefred/main.htm And we are on facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/QRlist/ List Archives are at: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/QUEBEC-RESEARCH ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to QUEBEC-RESEARCH-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
