    1. [Q-R] Clarice situation clearin up but getting stanger
    2. Joan Rooney via
    3. HI All, Another lister sent me the below info. It would seen that Clarice was already married in England and that her husband sent on ahead alone to work briefly as a cook in Toronto. Joseph Burton must have come in 1929 and they met up in Montreal where they had a child Shirley in July 1930. 2 messages from the archives: I looked at the Passenger Records and found: 1) that Clarice Pughe, aged 30, arrived on 17 November 1928 at Port of Quebec from Liverpoolm having sailed from there on 9 November 1928. She had assisted passage, her occupation was a cook and her destination was The Canadian Women's Hostel, 72 Carleton street, Toronto, ON; her mother's name was given as Mrs. L.E. Pughe, 8 Beardwood, Blackburn. 2) that the CPR ship Montclare sailed from Liverpool and arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia on 18 February 1933 with Mrs. Clarice Burton as a passenger, giving her place of birth as Blackburn, her age as 32, and that her mother was Mrs. Elizabeth Pughe, and her husband was Joseph Burton and address was the Eadie street on in Cote St. Paul

    3. Hi Doreen, Thanks very much for looking. They must have married c1929. Clarice came to Canada c1928. Perhaps, there will be another child later? Is that a Baptist Church? 3. There seems to be an overlapping of messages. Clarice Pughe & Joseph Burton had a child born July 1930 in Montreal at the Royal Victoria hospital, named Shirley and who died in September of that same year. Doreen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joan Rooney via" <quebec-research@rootsweb.com> To: QUEBEC-RESEARCH@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, October 7, 2014 8:42:57 AM Subject: Re: [Q-R] Clarice situation clearing up but getting stanger -- Messages from the Archives Another lister sent me the below info. Joseph Burton must have come in 1929 and they met up in Montreal where they had a child Shirley in July 1930 but she doesn’t seem to have lived long. Sorry, I forgot to add the first message before sending. It looks like someone else tried to find Clarice in 2011. From: Barbara Ferguson <macjoy@barbaraferguson.plus.com> Subject: [MONTREAL] Still Searching for Lost Mother Date: Sat, 3 Sep 2011 12:00:48 +0100 We thought the marriage between Clarice Pugh and Joseph Burton may have taken place between 1928 and 1933 in Montreal. Clarice Burton may have died around 1960/61 and Joseph who had been a soldier in WW2 disappears after the war possibly dying. My friend has now mentioned that she half remembers the name Shirley as a possible child born to Joseph and Clarice. So, now we need a birth certificate to try and track Shirley or any other possible children, making them potential half brothers or sisters for my friend. Clarice was born here in Lancashire in 1897 so a possible time frame for births in Montreal might be between 1936 and 1945. Warm regards Barbara Another lister sent me the below info. 3. I would like to express my opinion about facebook. I am an illeritate computer operator, but do get in a little on dial-up, very slow, and none of that modern stuff for me. Mostly what I can get is e-mail because websites are too slow downloading. So I would be very disappointed if this list diminished by the new technology. Too old to change my ways now. Thank you, Renee

If someone has PRDH (I ran out of my last hits) would look at that record and just tell me if Francois' name is there what notation they made of who he was. As they note uncle of number 1 or something like that. A contact in Germany asked how to find out who he is and this came to mind. 3. A mystery; Dennis Deshaw [1829 Canada] married Christiana Fisette [1832 Canada] somewhere in New York - Chazy or Schenectady areas - before 1869, when their son, William J Deshaw was born [b 1864- 1869 Schenectady or at least NY state] I found both Dennis and Christiana in separate residences in 1850 in Chazy, NY but can't find them in 1860 nor later; nor can I find either of their births in Canada. I can find William with his wife, Delia Ains Hanks in Vermont and _need no more data _on them. With my luck, after spending hours looking for them he won't be Hunault dit Deschamps. Maybe someone with their tongue held in the correct position can come up with something. Any help appreciated Fran --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! 3. Hi Fran, The only thing to do is to keep posting messages on the various lists you belong to, and hope that people will respond. There may still be members, but just not post too often. If there is activity then maybe interest will pick up, although I tend to doubt it……. Other than that, I don’t think there’s much to be done. This group has remained as active as always, with the addition of its facebook group, and I think that’s great. I would rather use a list like this for asking a question or discussing a topic than use facebook. I’m not quite sure the information will stay there, since genealogy research is not its purpose. 3. EXETER — The case of two teenagers allegedly caught toppling the headstone of a former pastor and then urinating on it in the Exeter Cemetery has infuriated police and the caretakers responsible for protecting those buried on the sacred grounds. “It’s a disgusting and senseless crime. It’s disrespectful to the community. It’s also a Class B felony,” said Exeter police Capt. Stephan Poulin. The teenagers, age 13 and 14, were charged last month in connection with the vandalism on Aug. 12 at the cemetery on Linden Street. The white carrara marble headstone dates to 1895 and belongs to Swift Byington, a pastor who served at the First Congregational Church from 1871 to 1894. Witnesses told police the teenagers knocked the stone over and then urinated on it. Police were quickly called and the teenagers were caught when police showed up and found them attempting to flee the area, Poulin said. They’ re now facing charges of interference with a cemetery/burial ground and criminal trespass. The headstone has since been repaired and the teenagers could be forced to pay restitution for the damage. “I was very glad they caught them. It’s just unfortunate,” said Randy Daley, superintendent of the Exeter Cemetery. "I would think they would know right from wrong at 13 or 14." Daley said this was the first case of vandalism in his three years as superintendent, but there was an incident several years ago involving more headstones that were vandalized. The Exeter Cemetery is a private cemetery and the only active one in town. Cemetery vandalism is hardly a new problem. As many as 75 headstones were reportedly vandalized at a cemetery in Claremont last year and more than 90 headstones were knocked over in Bedford in 2010, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. Some cemeteries in the state have now installed surveillance cameras in an effort to crack down on vandalism. “I would say it’s something that’s becoming more prevalent,” said Jeff Snow, secretary treasurer of the New Hampshire Cemetery Association. All too often, he said, vandals aren’t caught in the act because there’s no one around, especially at smaller cemeteries with no staff to keep an eye on things. “At a lot of cemeteries around the state, there’s nobody on the grounds all the time," he said. "When there’s nobody around, there’s very little evidence to go by." Cemeteries with more visitors are less likely to be hit by vandals, he said. The cemetery director in Hampton for the past 25 years, Danny Kenney said it’s important to have neighbors who help keep a watch over the cemeteries. He said he relies on neighbors at the High Street Cemetery, which is one of nine cemeteries in town but the only one that’s active. “Vandalism in a cemetery is the most cowardly act in the world," Kenney said. "When they are caught, we do prosecute to the full extent. It’s important for people to realize that it is a felony and they will be prosecuted. You never know who’s watching." Vandalism isn’t a common occurrence, but Kenney said it’s more likely to happen in the older cemeteries that are no longer active. “A lot of people don’t even know that some of these cemeteries exist,” he said. Kenney recalled an old cemetery in the woods with a few headstones that was repeatedly targeted by vandals. He said the stones were damaged and repaired several times, but it became too difficult to keep up and the cemetery was eventually “lost to vandalism.” “There was nothing I could do about that,” he said. Many people now do not use the cemetery due to other options that are available. I think younger people now often are not exposed to the cemetery and don’t have the reverence for it that maybe their parents or grandparents had because of their upbringing,” he said. Kathleen Gordon, manager of Calvary and St. Mary’s cemeteries in Portsmouth, recalled a few incidents in which monuments have been toppled, but said it hasn’t been a serious issue. “Fortunately, we don’t have a big problem and I hope that continues,” she said.

    3. Vandals hit a South Bend cemetery, knocking over dozens of headstones. Sixty headstones were damaged at City Cemetery. A large decorative piece from the front gate was also found on the ground. Cemetery employees however, aren't sure if this was part of the vandalism or if the piece broke off because of its age. This round of damage comes after an incident a few months ago, when someone ruined 230 headstones. Those markers have since been replaced at a considerable cost to the cemetery. A police report has been filed in response to the vandalism.
