    1. [Q-R] Grave marker stolen from cemetery
    2. WFlem72706 via
    3. Urn installed between 1912 and 191 A unique grave marker was stolen overnight from the Topeka Cemetery, according to police. A bronze urn that marked the grave of Bell E. Hurley was removed from its stand between 11 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. Monday, Topeka police Lt. Dean McWilliams said. The urn is 3 feet by 3 feet. “This is sickening beyond words,” said Deb Goodrich Bisel, the resident historian at the cemetery. The urn was placed at the cemetery between 1912 and 1917, according to correspondence between the Hurley family and the cemetery at the time. In order to gain access to the urn, the thieves drove over where Bell Hurley is buried, Bisel said. There are gates at the cemetery, but one stays open all night for police to patrol the area, according to the cemetery’s superintendent, Lori Cunningham. As she walked up to the graves about 3 p.m., Cunningham was still trying to find the words to describe how she felt about the theft. “I just want it back,” she said. James E. Hurley, Bell’s husband, is buried next to his wife on top of a hill near the mausoleum. A white obelisk marks James Hurley’s grave. The urn, along with the obelisk, were major sights at the cemetery, according to Bisel, and were meant to memorialize the couple that contributed to the Santa Fe Railroad. James Hurley was the general manager of the railroad. He died in 1910, Bisel said. “The (railroad’s) employees took up collections along the railroad for two years,” she said about how long it took for the money to be raised to purchase the urn and obelisk. An article in the Aug. 17, 1910, San Francisco Call described how the employees felt about their general manager. “His death was therefore entirely unexpected and almost caused a panic at the general office of the company,” the article read. “Men gathered in the corridors and wept like children, for no man on the Santa Fe system was so generally loved.” Along with the uniqueness of the urn, it is the effort behind it that adds to the importance of the piece, Bisel said. The investigation into the theft is open, according to McWilliams, but he said investigations like this are difficult. “We’ve asked people to call the police if they see anything,” he said. He said pieces of metal usually turn up at recycling plants or metal shops. “It’s irreplaceable,” Bisel said of the urn. “To see a grave desecrated like that, it’s tragic. It makes me sick.”7

    3. Joyce, Check out the new fiche as mentioned in this same digest, for Jacques (baptized Joachim) in Fichier Origine, certificate #240005. I have Jean Isaac Achon born abt 1613 in Savarit, LaRochelle from genealogiequebec, and a list of his children as: Louise baptized 20 Aug 1631 Chambon Ozanne or Anne baptized 12 Jul 1633 Chambon Jacques baptized Joachim 14 Feb 1635 Chambon I have found a Barbe listed somewhere as his sister b 18 Apr 1617 and died 29 Nov 1700 St-Pierre Quebec, that sounds more like an aunt. AND I found Helene's father listed a Helie de Talleyrand Regourde b 1570 France d 1637 NY, and a wife named Anna Gould, in one of "those trees" in ancestry.com with no sources and lots of guesswork. At least with the Fichier Origine, we have facts and sources! I had a ball going through all the new fiches, and found some ancestors I've been looking for, for a long long time! Norton April 14, 1884 Manchester, NH I am looking for the names of Josephine's parents. The NH vital records did not include the parents' names, so I'm hoping the church record will have it.
