Kevan Joseph's father Louis was the widower of Marie Cantara. Usually when a widower/widow marries again the name of the parents are seldom mentioned just the name of the deceased spouse. (Louis Lefort, veuf de Marie Cantara) They usually mentioned if one of the parents has died. It states on 18 Sep 1849 that Joseph Lefort, son of Louis Lefort, widower (referring to Joseph) of Marie Cantalau is marrying Rosalie Lapotrie, dau of Francois Lapotrie and Rosalie Morin. Do you agree? I believe with certainty that widower refers to Joseph and not his father. Would it not make odd sense to even mention that his father was a widower within his son's marriage record? I haven't been active on the list for some time but I, too, remember how generous he was with his time. A dear man who will be missed by many. Jackie Hostage
Thanks for posting the obit Linnie. I think of him from time to time and wonder how he's doing. He was so nice and such a helpful man. He will be missed. Joan
I was so sorry to hear of his death. He was such a wonderful person helping all of us on the Quebec Research page.
Father John was instrumental in my learning to read and transcribe French Canadian vital records when I started my genealoty research. I would not have been able to do it without him. I never had the opportunity to meet him but I too considered him a friend. He will be missed. -----Original Message----- From: linp219--- via Quebec-Research [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, October 4, 2018 11:50 AM To: [email protected] Cc: [email protected] Subject: [Q-R] My friend Father John L. Just as I was ready to write here that we would make the necessary changes to our information, we received your e-mail requesting the change! So be assured we will take your work into account. Thank you. Bertrand Desjardins PRDH-IGD ________________________________________ De : [email protected] [[email protected]] Envoyé : 4 octobre 2018 09:09 À : 'Quebec Research list' Objet : [Pourriel Potentiel] [Q-R] Joseph Louis Lefort (b1793) and his two wives, Marie Cantara and Rosalie Lapotrie (recap) Folks, I'm providing this as a recap of research of a French Canadian family that emigrated to upstate New York and then on to Vermont. I've been asking a bundle of questions on the list regarding them. So, I thought it best to put what is pretty much the synopsis of my research so far. Anyway, I cracked the nut. I'll be asking the PRDH and Genquebe to consider updating their databases. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------- PRDH couple number 62551 rightly provides the birth and baptism of two brothers, Louis (b. Sorel, 1790) and Joseph (b. Sorel, 1793), sons of Louis Lefort and Marie Theotiste Vignola. A Louis Lefort married Marie Cantara, daughter of Michel Cantara and Joseph Arel, at Yamaska , 12 May 1823. PRDH and Genealogiequebec both ascribe this marriage to the older Louis Lefort (b. 1790) based on same name usage of these two early baptismal and marriage records and I think this is in error though logical with only these two records being used as justification. I believe, however, the groom of the marriage of Marie Cantara is in fact Joseph Louis Lefort (b. 1793). Any counter argument is welcome. PRDH built a family of four children around Louis Lefort (b. 1790) and Marie Cantara, even though two of the children's records use Joseph Lefort and the other two use Joseph Louis Lefort as the father. The name Louis is not used by itself. Children: Joseph (b. Yamaska, 1824), Marie Louise (b. Yamaska, 1826), Sophie (b. Yamaska, 1828) and Justine (b. and d. Yamaska 1830) At some time after 1830, the family immigrated to the Coopersville/Chazy area of upstate New York. This is where (aside for the name used on the children's records) we have corroborating evidence that the father is indeed Joseph (b 1793) and NOT Louis (b. 1790). On 18 Sep 1849 in Coopersville, Clinton, NY, Joseph Lefort, son of Louis Lefort, and widower of Marie Cantara, married Marie Rosalie Godin dit Lapoterie (b. 1821). In the 1860 census, Joseph is 66 putting his birth date at 1793/94; the 1870 census backs this up putting the birth date at 1793/94. Joseph Lefort died 1 Mar 1879 and was buried 3 Mar 1879 in Coopersville, Clinton, NY. His age being "about" 87 (birth about 1892/93). He was the husband of Rosalie. This couple proceeded to have a number of children themselves, all born in the US (most of which have baptismal records in Chazy - Joseph and Rosalie (or odd variations): Rosalie (b. 1850); Theodore (b. 1851); Paul Napolean (b. 1854); Allie Maglorie (b. 1857); John M. (b. 1859); Amelia (b. 1864); and Jessie Rosella (b. 1873). It is interesting to note that all of these later children used the anglicized name, Wilfore, during their lifetimes, and almost all of which immigrated by 1890 to central Vermont. Rosalie, the mother, died 28 Dec 1912 in Berlin, Washington, VT, while living with her daughter Amelia Wilfore, wife of Almon St. John. I've found many of the children's baptismal records as Lefort, but marriage and death records as Wilfore - dates match as does the census records. Additionally, the 1860 FC NY provides another child for the first marriage, Joseph and Marie Cantara. Her name was Lenora (b. 8 Aug 1842). Among other things, Fr. John was a great help with our Latin and French documents. He aided me in breaking down some dubious brick walls by translating very long documents. Folks, I'm providing this as a recap of research of a French Canadian family that emigrated to upstate New York and then on to Vermont. And, there is possibly another son, Hercule Lefort, who was a witness to Joseph's burial. With the equation as stated above, it might provide the clues to research the period between Sorel/Yamaska and Chazy, NY. Here are the links to the docs ref'ed above. My sympathies to all who "knew" Fr. Sullivan, either in person or through his many contributions to this list. I have missed his knowledge and expertise in genealogy. May he now rest in peace, S. Nancy
