Perhaps a little more info might be helpful - if you have any. How do you know this is his birthdate and place? He does not show up in the Ontario birth register index, nor does he show up in the St. Patrick Catholic church register for that date (or the subsequent 2 years). I'm assuming since you posted this to the Quebec research list that the family was Catholic - that may not be an accurate assumption, in which case it would be helpful to know what you posted to this site in searching for his parents. He is not showing up in the 1881 or 1891 census records. Adrien Dabancour dit Lacaille, was the father-in-law of Jean Joliet and not Nicolet -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: October-06-18 2:35 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Q-R] Re: Quebec-Research Digest, Vol 13, Issue 174 I have been doing some new research on Rene Maheu who married my 8th great-grandmother Jeanne Garnier/Gresnier abt 1635-1703 in 1657, and discovered there are a whole bunch of early settlers named Rene Maheu. So I set out to find if any were related. In a book titled "Searching Through the Old Records of New France" by Cyprien Tanguay, a translation by armand H. Demers, Jr. and found the following on page 35: "1646 October 12th A marriage contract was drawn up between Nicholas Macard and marguerite Couillard, the widow of Jean Nicolet and daughter of Guillaume Couillard. Friends and witnesses were: MM. De Montmagny, Gouveneur, René and Louis Maheu, cousins of the bride. The actual ceremony was celebrated on the 10th of November in the Church of Québec. (Québec Register)" I couldn't find a Louis Maheu in my tree so began a search, first through the above book, where I found on page 32: "1641, May 26th, The Burial of Adrien Dabancour dit Lacaille, the father-in-law of Jean Nicolet. He and his companion, Etienne Sevestre, had drowned on the 2nd of May in 1640 while hunting on the Iles-de-Bellechasse opposite Berthier. On the 20th of May in 1641, Jean Nicolet found his father-in-law's remains[10] and brought them to Quebec where they were solemnly buried in the Quebec cemetery. (Notre-Dame de Quebec Registers). [10] The location of Lacaille's remains was named after him--Lacaille's Point -- but is now know as Saint-Thomas-de-Montmagny. " and on page 33: "1642 November 3rd The first marriage of a Frenchman to an Indian woman to be blessed by the Church was celebrated in Québec. The husband was Martin Prévost and his wife was Marie-Olivier (Manitouabéwich) [a Huron Indian with Sylvestre as her family name]. He became a widower in 1665 [the 10th of September] and married Marie Dabancour, the widow of Godfroy Guillot and sister of Mme. Jean Nicolet on the 8th of November of that same year. (Québec Register)" Never having heard of Dabancour dit Lecaille, I started researching through Jetté and found neither name, so went to Martin Prévost, just for the heck of it. Hmm. He first married Marie-Olivier Sylvestre, but after her death remarried to Marie (d') Abancourt. So who in tarnation is the father-in-law of Jean Nicolet? Was his Indian wife really the sister of Prévost's first wife? If so, Jean's first wife's father would be Roch Manitouabéouich, right? So not the father-in-law buried in 1641. And since Jean never married Marie (d') Abancourt,. not Adrien. All this is supposed to have come from newspapers printed at the time of the events, so one might think the reportage fairly accurate? Any thoughts? Patricia in SW Florida

Renee, The way you are reading it is the way I've traditionally read it. The problem is that it makes no sense to me when looking at the rest of the documentation available for Joseph. The census records that I find the couple in as well as the death record for Joseph plants his birth on 1793, making it impossible for him to be the son of Louis Lefort and Marie Cantara. And in the records, a Joseph Lefort of 1793 (Sorel/Yamaska) had a father named Louis Lefort (mother was a Vignola). His age at which he married Rosalie leaves it open to have had a previous marriage and it makes sense of a daughter Lenora being in the 1860 census being aged 18 (she would have been born about 1842, eight years before the marriage of Joseph and Rosalie). Once I started playing with Joseph (as husband of Marie Cantara) on Genquebec and the PRDH, everything fell into place. Genquebec has the marriage record of Louis Lefort (father was Louis and mother Vignola) and Marie Cantara, but then the PRDH built this couple out with children, all of which has Joseph or Joseph Louis as a father. The records PRDH used for the family build are all Sorel and Yamaska. There are zero records (that I've found) that has a Louis Lefort and Marie Cantara as parents (but I'll be going back over everything). All of them have Joseph or Joseph Louis Lefort and Marie Cantara. Anyway, to make a long story short Joseph's full name was Joseph Louis Lefort. I would conjecture that his older brother Louis (b. 1790) to Lefort/Vignola died young or has yet to pop up in the records I'm looking at. So, I figured that if I'm correct and the family in Chazy, New York was the same family as the one in Sorel , I might find records in Chazy that have the same parents as the children in Yamaska/Sorel. And, sure enough, I did. I found an Angela lefort getting married, whose parents are Joseph Lefort and Marie Cantara. I think there might be two additional I will ultimately identify, Hercule and Emerence. And, the oldest of the Lefort/Cantara kids, Joseph, appears to be in the Chazy area. I wanted further evidence of the Sorel Leforts being in Chazy. And, sure enough, Charles, a younger brother of Joseph (b.1793) and this Charles' wife (a Millet) are in the area. Charles has a PRDH family build as well, all of which are based on Canadian records. He has more children based on the records in Chazy just as Joseph has. One of the problems with completing the families is that there is a record gap of about fifteen years when the family disappears in the Sorel area around 1830 and when they reappear in the Chazy area after 1843 (I think that's the earliest I've found of any Chazy/Cooperstown records. Have you an idea of where records that cover that gap are kept? And, the Lefort/Cantara and Lefort/Lapoterie family continued to move - many settling in mid-Vermont and using the anglicized name Wilfore they started using in Chazy. It looks like Charles' family move on from Chazy and settled in Wisconsin. So, going back to the marriage record. I think the record should be read, Joseph, son of Louis Lefort, (and) widower of Marie Cantara. What are your thoughts? I'll be hitting all the Lefort/Cantara kids to see if records of later life provide any additional details. Kevan Joseph's father Louis was the widower of Marie Cantara. Usually when a widower/widow marries again the name of the parents are seldom mentioned just the name of the deceased spouse. (Louis Lefort, veuf de Marie Cantara) They usually mentioned if one of the parents has died.
