Since you think that he came to the US by way of Canada, and you were hoping to find him in NYC, he probably came to that place by way of Castle Gardens, ( or Castle Clinton as some called it) in Manhattan. There are no records for immigrants entering the US throught this port, but since you know the year, you might have some luck with a ships list, such as Cyndi's lists etc. There is also the possiblilty that he came through Philadelphia or Baltimore. If he did come by way of Canada, it is likely that he came by water down the St Lawrence to the Lake Champlain and to towns like Plattsburg NY or Burlington VT. The over land route would have taken him to places like New Port VT , or Colchester NH or even down the Old Canada Road to Maine. This time was just on the cusp of the Railroad era, but I don't think there was much rail activity before th 1850's. Fran Wilcox
