Thought some of you might want to hear of a weird event that I ran across in preparing my paper relating to the French soldiers who were in the Seven Years War (French and Indian War). Jean-Baptiste Guillaume PREVOST (or PERROT), Sieur of Basserodes, Chevalier of the St-Louis Cross, and Captain in the Languedoc Regiment, was married to Marie-Luce QUESSY , an Acadian and widow of Jean-Baptiste CIRE (or CYR), on 20 Sept 1760 at Deschambault, with pastor MENAGE officiating. In a letter to Fr. Menage dated 1 Dec 1760, the diocesan Vicar-General, Fr. Briand found it surprising that an experienced, respectable and reputable pastor of the diocese celebrated the marriage of M. de BASSERODES with negligence in employing the prescribed procedures. M. Levis, then Commander of all French soldiers in North America, did not grant any grace (favors) to BASSERODES when he returned to France because the marriage was a "mesalliance" (mismatch) for a Chevalier of St-Louis. I couldn't find much on Marie-Luce except PRDH tells us that she and BASSERODES attended the baptism of Jean-Baptiste Archange GIDE (son of a soldier in BASSERODES' Company) on 26 Sept 1760 at Batiscan. She was shown as the widow of CIRE (CYR) and not as the wife of BASSERODES. Go figure. Jerry
