    3. Hello, Seeing the SMITH name on one of the Lists yesterday reminded me that I am still interested in learning about the family of William and Jane SMITH of Compton County in the late 1800's/early 1900's. The 1881 Census has William, Age 25, Jane, 28, and son, Henry, 2. The 1901 Census has William, 44, Jane, 49, and daughter, Gertrude, 19. I believe they remained living in Compton County. When I first found this couple a year or so ago, I thought this Mrs. Jane SMITH might have been the missing sister of my great-grandfather. If she was, she would have been .. Hannah "Jane" KERR, b1854 in Argenteuil County, to parents: Robert KERR and Elizabeth HENDERSON. They moved from Argenteuil to Compton in the 1860's, I think. However, looking at some of the family-tree information linked to the web site for "the Former Township of Gore" in Argenteuil Co., I found a researcher had the wife of William H. SMITH as Jane KERR, b1/1846 ("of Ireland"), and being the daughter of Robert KERR and Margaret HENDERSON. (I believe this was a Robert KERR who was not part of the original KERR / HENDERSON group arriving in Gore Township in 1823/1824. But, he was associated with them later, so he might have been related.) http://www3.telus.net/public/mcelroye/webpages/gore.html/intro.html This researcher has William H. SMITH born in 8/1856 in Compton County, and marrying Jane KERR in 1/1877 in Compton County. FYI: There was another Hannah Jane KERR, born 1846 in Argenteuil County who was the daughter of William KERR anad Elizabeth BEATTIE. This Hannah reportedly married William WOODS, b1843 "of Ireland." My opinion is that the Hannah "Jane" KERR born 1854 is closer in age to Mrs. Jane (KERR) SMITH born ~1852/1853 ... than the Jane KERR born in 1846. (Note: The Jane KERR and the Hannah Jane KERR born in 1846 were born (or baptised) only two weeks apart.) In summary, I'm wondering if anyone knows which SMITH family that William H. SMITH, b1856 Compton Co., came from? And, does anyone know what happened to William and Jane SMITH's son, Henry SMITH, b~1879 in Compton Co., and their daughter, Gertrude SMITH, b~1882 in Compton Co.? And, I'd like to know whether other people have opinions on whether the wife of William SMITH could have been my great-grandfather's sister. My great-grandfather was William Robert KERR born Argenteuil Co., who went with his family to Compton Co. But, around 1872, he migrated to Boston, MA. His other sister, Mary Ann KERR, might have made the trip with him. (She married a William McGINNIS/McINNIS near Boston.) Possibly in the 1890's, the parents, Robert and Elizabeth KERR, migrated to Boston, bringing their two younger sons, Robert and Joseph KERR, with them. (The younger brothers again migrated to Washington State.) Their sister, Hannah Jane KERR, is the only one unaccounted for. Thank you for your time.
