List, Along with so many other notes in my FTM recordings, I`d like to be able to give a more positive viewing . Can anyone on the list give me an accepted spelling for 'Josephte or Josephite' ? Is there a site that lists allowances of given name multiple spellings ? Dave
Hi Dave; The PRDH always spells Josephte as Josephe. You can decide to do the same. But in my experience, I've seen Josephte as the recognized spelling in church documents more often than the other spelling, even though in notarial documents that I've consulted, it seems the notaries did otherwise. I've even seen the name spelled "Joseph", same as the spelling for a man's name in some notarial documents even when a woman was the subject. I've adopted the Josephte spelling in my FTW data base, as it seems that it was the more recognized version, (at least in the church records I've consulted) which eventually became Josette today (in most cases),as that seems to be the way it was pronounced. However, in my notes I usually mention the way it was spelled in the original document. As for Josephite, I don't recall having seen that name. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything, as I'm not an expert in the matter. Might be a mispelling for Josephine.
