What follows this paragraph is my sort-of-twice-annual edited composite of all that I know for certain sure about my Vermont (and nearby NY & Quebec) ancestors. I do this in case someone knows something related to these folks that is not stated below. If you do, please share it with me. Also, if anyone is in or near Newfane, VT, please note the research suggested at the bottom of this message. While I could call or write, a local contact or even face to face always works best. ---------- 1741 - 1760 source: "Jean J." <jeanjb@uswest.net> Subject: My Gould brick wall is....Ebenezer GOULD b. ca 1720/21 in Massachusetts. Martin" <darrellm@sprynet.com>: I have been digging through back mail, and stumbled across yours. For what it's worth, I find the following entry in the published records of Rockingham (Windham County) Vermont. My copy is the 1994 reprint by the Genealogical Society of Vermont. The entry is on page 90: "Vol. IV., Page 19, May 18, 1805. Ebenezer Gould & Comfort Gould his Wife & Ezra Gould & Sally Gould their Children were warned out of town.." I believe the vol./pg. reference is to the original town records. I apologize if you already know this, but "warnings out" were NOT an indication of the character of those so warned. They were, instead, a legal fiction, designed to protect New England towns from becoming liable for the upkeep of persons who arrived in town and then claimed to be indigent. The warnings were observed as a formality even when obviously unnecessary. I know of one case where a family was warned out of town even though the reason for their arrival was to take possession of a very prosperous farm for which they had paid a considerable sum of money! ---------- 1808 Abel Gould born. ---------- 1811 Eunice Wakefield born, Middletown, New York. On 6/24/98, "Marge Wilcox" <mwilcox@ismi.net> wrote that French's 1860 NY Gazetteer (an absolute must for NY ancestor tracing) says there were three Middletowns: Middletown, village, part of town of Walkill, Orange Co. Middletown, town, Delaware Co. Middletown, village, part of town of Half Moon, Saratoga Co Today a Middletown is in Orange County, NY currently on I 84 west of the Hudson and not far from the Delaware River. Saratoga County is closer to Vermont. ---------- 1814 source: "RobertT. King" bobking@Seanet.com Subject: Re: [NORTHEAST] VERMONT WARNINGS OUT, VOL. As for the format, I would say that Hannah is his wife, although I can't say for absolute. ---------- 1850 Census. source: Ed greenmt@valinet.com, Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 22:02:52 -0500, who has been compiling info on Gould families of Newfane from Vermont vital records available on micofilm at Berkshire Atheneum, Pittsfield, Ma. who says: This family is also included in 1850 census of Newfane, although it was omitted on the census index. I live right above the Williamsville Cemeteries and have records of those and Newfane, South Newfane, Dover, etc. These are the only new things I found: GOULD, ABEL, d. 4 May 1875 age 66/10/11 [I calculated back his date of birth, then, to 23 Jun 1808. He would have been 52 at the date of the 1860 census ---------- 1876 source: "Marge Wilcox" mwilcox@ismi.net Death Notices: Mrs. Ebenezer GOULD in Hampton, NY; Grandville Sentinel, March 28, 1876. p. 3 (Hampton is right on the border of NY and VT.) ---------- From: Ed greenmt@valinet.com There were lots of Gould's in Windham Co.Vt.,very hard to sort them all out. Wish I could tell you which family Abel came from. Vermont vital records are skimpy on births, and most death and marriage records do not have parents listed. Eunice Gould's death notice was a lucky one-lots of info. Also notice that all 4 death notices (Eunice,Everett,Leroy,Marietta) were marked true copies of originals, the copies dated Ap.27,1920 and July 15,1920. Looks like someone in 1920 did family research on Abel Gould. Maybe Newfane town clerk has records of who requested copies in 1920. Williamsville Ce. might have further info. ------ ----------------------------------------------- To contact the list owner, use stephenL@indiana.edu Please don't send ATTACHED FILES to the list!
