    1. [QUEBEC] Age for consent for marriage in Quebec in 1874?
    2. Allyssa Edwards
    3. I've been trying to decipher a marriage record that is in french, and with incredibly hard to read handwriting (and my french is very rusting, but i'm getting help). it indicated that both persons are minors. I read in an article that the age of consent varied depending on time period and that it could be different for males and females. My people are Hyacinthe Dussault and Emelie Pouliot. The record I found on ancestry says 2 Jun 1874, though i'm not sure yet if thats the actual date of marriage. it lists both people as "fil mineur/fille mineure" from what i can read. So i'm trying to narrow down the age range from that. Can anyone tell me what the age of consent was for each gender at that time? they were catholic and in St Hyacinthe, Quebec. Thanks for any suggestions. -- ~*~ Allyssa (New England, USA) ~*~ (I am often house-bound or limited, so can often only search from home. I always GREATLY appreciate the kindness of volunteers.) Need a Massachusetts Vital Record from before 1850? Please feel free to ask. I can look them up on my discs, no problem :) http://branches-leaves.blogspot.com (new site with obits, records, transcriptions, etc)

    3. Kwai Kwai (Hello) Ms Edwards, Back in the 1800's into the early 1900's. per tribal traditions of the various Abenaki Clans and Bands in northern New England and in Quebec, the age that an Abenaki lady could be married was at the age of 15 years of age. My grandmother on my father's side who was born in Canada was such an Abenaki lady when she married my grandfather shortly after the turn of the 1900's ( a copy of the page from the family Bible shows that fact). Whether it was a common pravtice amongst all of the people, native and non-native, I do not know, but there are many incidentts of this practice throughout many Abenaki families on both sides of the US-Canadian border during those years, and it is one of several clues as to the possibility that the lady who was married at the age of 15 MIGHT have been of possible Abenaki lineage in an Abenaki Clan. Hopefully, this tidbit of informastion might be of help to someone in their attempt to solving a lineage puzzle, especially if they are researching a Native American/First Nations lineage. There are a few cases wherein some of these marriages by young ladies at the age of 15 y.o. when they were not Native American//First Nations ladies but from what I have seen, they are very few that I am aware of. Maybe someone has more info on the subject then I am aware of. 3. Hi Allysa; The age of consent at that time in Quebec was 21. So if they were "minors" i.e. not of age, then they were not yet 21 when they married. I recall reading something somewhere on that particular topic, not sure if it was on the Internet or not..
