Remember also that WWI had just ended, Spanish flu was on the rise and women's suffrage in Quebec didn't start until about 1940. Women didn't work outside the home in those days and occupation choices were marriage, religious life, domestic, teaching or nursing; office work was done by men from mailroom to secretary. Those women who had worked in munitions plants during the War were out of work after 1918. Many widowed women with children would place them in an orphange during the week and would earn money as domestic. Marrying someone you barely knew must have seemed like the only safe choice for many. Survival took precedence over love and romance. Just my thoughts...... Cheers!
