    1. Re: [QUEBEC] Rivers
    2. Francis T. Watters
    3. Hi Carollee; Fran; By coincidence, yesterday I was looking for a Rivers, Francis by name, born about 1808-1810 who happened to have married a lady by name of Emmeline or Emily/Amelia, born in Vermont. (They eventually moved to Michigan) So I checked in various censuses and noted your Rivers but did not pursue as my Francis had moved to Ontario by about 1833. However, I do know who your James Rivers is (I'm fairly sure of it). If you check the 1850 US Federal census for Enosburg, Vt, page 2, you'll see that he lists a bunch of children all born in Canada: Jacko or Jocko River, male, 47, farmer Mary River, female, 40, Joseph, male, 22, labourer Del;in, female, 16 Jocko, male, 14 Antoine, male, 12 Nancy, female, 8 Victoria, female, 6 Not far from Jacko or Jocko is the Dominy or Domini family. The Rivers and Dominy are related. Jacko/Jocko/James is Jacques Thouvelin/Touvelin dit LaRiviere son of Jean-Baptiste and Marie Magdeleine Lepire who married Marue Petit dit Gobin, d/o Antoine & Angelique Forcier, in Yamaska, Qc. on 23 August 1825. I found the following baptisms, all in Yamaska: Basile born and bapt. on 15 Sept., 1826; Joseph, born and bapt. on 6 October 1828; Marie, born and baptised on 7 August 1832, and; Adeline, born and bapt. on 13 March 1835. I couldn't find the others. The family must have moved after 1835. Pascahl Rivers is also listed in Enosburg, Franklin Co., 1850 census but he is on page 29, working or living with a Jasper Johnston and wife Saphran as a labourer. The record doesn't say if he was married or not, but there is no wife or child with him. He was said to be 25 yrs old, born in Canada. Since he is living right next to James Rivers in 1860, I surmise that he must be the one baptized under the name Basile. The dob fits. But that is only an assumption. Even though he shows that Timothy and another child were born in Canada, I think they were really born in Vermont. In 1880 Timothy in fact says he was born in Vermont. Pascal remarried between 1870 and 1880 - the Vermont Vital records might show who his parents were.. Francis Domini dit St Sauveur was married to Theotiste Touvelin dite Lariviere. Theotiste was probably too much to handle (I think) and it was then changed to Calistta or something like that. Note thast the "Calista" in the 1850 census with James is younger by about 10 years cmpared to Mary in the 1850 census. Thus she was probably James' second wife. +. There is a Mary Rivers also on page 24 of the same 1850 census, living with the Alvin and Anna Fassett family. She is shown as being born in Vermont, but I think it must be Marie, born in Yamaska on 7 August 1832 (see above) I see that there is also a Stone family in Enosburg, born in Canada. They might be Lepire, but could also be Lapierre, a family that also resided in Yamaska about the same time as the Touvelin-Lariviere family.. The Paschal Lariviere married to Robillard is not the same as the one in Vermont although the age is about right. This Paschal died in Montreal in 1867 while your Paschal was still alive per the 1870 and 1880censuses I hope this will be of help to you and family. 3. Hi John, An Update. I checked the same church and found William born July 5, 1873. William and Mary's son William was born the same day according to the 1901 census. So I'm going with Mary Potter. I didn't find a marriage record for William Watson and Mary Potter. 3. Hi John, This may or may not help much, but I look at the 1871 census and see that William and Mary have a son, Archibald L. Watson abt. 2 years old. I found a baptism for Archibald Levi Watson born Jan. 20, 1869 Baptised May 9, 1869 at the Rockburn Presbyterian Church. Parents are William and Mary Potter. I didn't Find Archibald on one of the later censuses where the month and day of birth are listed so couldn't compare. Le parrain a été le Sieur Jean Baptiste Côté, Seigneur de l'Isle Verte, la marraine Catherine Riou, sa soeur. B 6 I, undersigned, Ambroise, priest and pastor of Kamouraska, and serving the parishes of St-Germain de Rimousky, Notre Dame des Anges de Trois Pistoles, and St Jean Baptiste de l'Isle Verte, certifies having baptized this day in the aforementioned parish Jean Baptiste Riou, son of Sieur Nicolas Riou and Dame Louise Asselin, his father and mother, of this place, born the twenty sixth of May seventeen hundred twenty nine. The godfather was Sieur Jean Baptiste Côté, Seigneur of l'Isle Verte, the godmother, Catherine Riou, his sister. There is no notation reading "sous condition", which indicates that a child was baptized provisionally at home (the word in French is "ondoyé"), and at a later date, the child was brought to church, where other rites of baptism were performed and, in some cases, the baptism was repeated conditionally (the condition -- just in case it wasn't done properly in the first place).
