    3. Bob, they would usually name a child by the same name only if the first one died. As they wanted to have a name stay in the family so much that if one boy died the next boy would take that name.. I have one who died while she was carrying another. He died in January and the other was born in August and a boy again so there the name came back.. Normally the boys would all get Joseph and the Girls would get Marie with one or two names after that, but not usually in the same sequence.. Anyway that's my two cents.. Good Luck. 3. I really think it's a matter of personal preference....but I didn't "prefer" it!!! In my family, my dad had his father's name as HIS middle name. My mother named my firstborn brother using our dad's name as my brother's middle name. I did the same thing with my firstborn son. I gave him his own name and then used my husband's name as HIS middle name. When I had another son, I gave him my DAD's name as his middle name! Only had the two sons, so I didn't have to do anything else with middle names for boys!!! mas -----Original Message----- From: quebec-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:quebec-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sue J Sent: Wednesday, January 20, 2010 5:03 PM To: quebec@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [QUEBEC] Strange marriage entry - Pierre CHORET 1686 Oh, you forgot the II, III and IV's. 3. >From time to time we find that an ancestors name hasn't been recorded as we expect it to be. We also understand that if a person was not able to spell their name, had an accent or the enumerator didn't hear very well, a person's surname could take on some variations .... to say nothing of a French surname being translated into English. To view some curious and amusing ones, and maybe find a few you recognize, go to www.familysearch.org and select the USA 1880 Census for Clinton Co., NY and only enter the first name "Amelia".. or any first name. I saw some beauties: Shortsleves for Courtmanche was my favourite, then there is Wallet for Ouellet and I wonder if Gigger was meant to be Giguere? Have fun folks! 3. This is because of the naming practices that the French used. Amongst the family members they would have different names. The baptism name was often not used. socially. 3. In the 1901 Census for Canada - Julia/ Juliana - is shown as Ilushka -The enumerator had a surname of Bennett - Julia should not have been a problem. A surname that I had been researching - was never spelled correctly -some times - Much imagination put into the spelling - It was only by knowing the location - and the given names of the children that the family was found. I can send you the .jpg marriage if you would like to look at it. It was just so strange to come across this as I was filling in the info for my direct line. I like to get siblings for each generation of my direct lines. I find that sometimes the families merge. Both my grandmother and grandfather, on my mother's side are direct ancestors to Pierre's parents. I go through two of their children. Once grandchild marries into the COTE lines (my grandmother) and another marries my (Roture dit) BELISLE lines (my grandfather). The death dates for the two Pierres is further proof that there were two as is the appearance of both of them on the 1667 census. Interestingly, the brothers married on the same day. 3. Hi Mas, So far, I have not come up with anything unusual. I have gone back into the registers where the children were baptized and getting more children. I only had 3 children yesterday and now I have several more. I haven't found the second Pierre - yet.
