Renee & all; It's a wonderful new (to me) feature at PRDH. When you get a hit after a search, click on the location and the map comes up in a new window showing exactly where the place is. I love it. I didn't realize it was from 1850 making it even better. Hello, A researcher on the KERR Board is looking for information about a Miss KERR and Mr. ROBERTS who married in St. Foye in 1838. Out of curiousity, I searched "St. Foye" and found out there was a "Battle of St. Foye" in 1760. Then I found it mentioned in 2 on-line books about the history of Quebec: http://books.google.com/books?id=16sOAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA1-PA179&lpg=RA1-PA179&dq=%22St.+Foye%22&source=bl&ots=vDvo6obntY&sig=kwxpTcCcoqyanvTe_efelaP_hIg&hl=en&ei=q1FlS8isDJXwlAeuw6GUCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CA0Q6AEwAzgK#v=onepage&q=%22St.%20Foye%22&f=false http://books.google.com/books?id=OA4TAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA88&lpg=PA88&dq=%22St.+Foye%22&source=bl&ots=OjXLQ-vI0v&sig=jo2ffQq1ZwEKODn0xLQey4yamzs&hl=en&ei=PVNlS9__C5WUlAeo-o2UCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CBgQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=%22St.%20Foye%22&f=false I'm not finding a history of St. Foye, yet; it's probably part of the history of Quebec City. But, there are references on-line to people being born there during the late 1600's and marrying there in the early 1700's. I see on this site that what is now Quebec City had major changes during the 1760's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_City Any comments? Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. My KERR ancestors were part of a family-group which arrived in the Prov. of Quebec in 1820's, but they settled in Argenteuil County. From my 7 years of research on-line, I found out that KERR's arriving from 1800 to 1850 settled in 3 different areas of the Province - Argenteuil County and in the Eastern Townships (Richmond and New Port, etc.). I don't remember reading about KERR's in the City of Quebec.
http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/fr/carteQuebec.asp?CODE=401 Just came upon this map of Quebec parishes before 1850. Just click on the parish you want and then click on "Statistiques" It will give you the BMS for different years for that parish Good luck Renee
I suspect you are right in a lot of cases. And also, parents kind of "made arrangements" sometimes for their kids to marry someone. There were also planned marriages, whereby both parties brought something to the marriage, like land, etc. Personally, I prefer having had the choice of the man I really WANTED! I can remember a couple dates I had when I was younger, and my mother and his mother would think it would be cute if we got together.... Well, the mothers might have had a lot more in common than their kids did with each other!!! -----Original Message----- From: quebec-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:quebec-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of D. Women didn't work outside the home in those days and occupation choices were marriage, religious life, domestic, teaching or nursing; office work was done by men from mailroom to secretary. Those women who had worked in munitions plants during the War were out of work after 1918. Many widowed women with children would place them in an orphange during the week and would earn money as domestic. Marrying someone you barely knew must have seemed like the only safe choice for many. Survival took precedence over love and romance. Just my thoughts...... Cheers! You are so right! And they had big families in those days, too. Someone had to support them, and someone had to take care of them.....do the laundry, cooking, cleaning, etc. Life was not easy. It wasn't all Hollywood romance!!! It was more about survival. I guess if you were lucky, you'd end up with someone who was both convenient and that you were really attracted to!!! -----Original Message----- From: quebec-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:quebec-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Stella Stanger Sent: Sunday, January 24, 2010 8:52 PM To: quebec@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [QUEBEC] Paradis/Beaudoin Hi Sometimes the 2nd marriages by the remaining spouse [husband or wife ]were a a necessity rather than an immediate love match. Remember also that WWI had just ended, Spanish flu was on the rise and women's suffrage in Quebec didn't start until about 1940. Cheers! While I can see why he'd need someone to care for those little ones, marrying them is a big step. You could always get a "hired hand" woman!!! Except, I suppose the morals of the day wouldn't let them "live" in the same house....????? I guess there were a lot of marriages of convenience in those days. A man needed a woman and a woman needed a man. Hopefully, you got a good one!!! -----Original Message----- From: quebec-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:quebec-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Diane Tamulion Sent: Saturday, January 23, 2010 6:47 PM To: quebec@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [QUEBEC] Paradis/Beaudoin He probably didn't wait very long if he had children.
