The Récollets were a branch of the Order of Friars Minor (OFM), more commonly called Franciscans. Recollection houses were, strictly speaking, friaries to which friars desirous of devoting themselves to prayer and penance could withdraw to dedicate their lives to spiritual recollection. By the late 18th century, the French Récollets had 11 provinces with over 2500 friaries. The Order was suppressed in France during the Revolution. In other European countries it was -- and still is -- known as "Capuchin Friars." Hi Blair, I have seven children of Jean-Francois LEMIRE and Francoise FOUCAULT -- five born and baptised in Trois Rivieres. The last two -- Alexis and Pierre -- were born in Maskinonge. Alexis was baptised in Trois-Rivieres and Pierre in Maskinonge or Louiseville (the Jette record is not clear on that). Perhaps it was a case of the family relocating to nearby Maskinonge where the baptism was recorded but also recorded in their old parish at Trois-Rivieres. Just a thought ... Hi Blair I'm looking at LDS record 1701-1797 and I see Pretre Recollet`` what that means is the priest is a Recollet. Récollets A Roman Catholic religious order founded in France in the 16th century. Thank you Fran, Michelle, Tony & Doreen! You have all been a wonderful help. My head is swimming from all the additional look-ups I've been doing based on your information. But... it has opened up the next can of worms... The friend I am researching for is the daughter of: Joseph Amedee Ferdinand GOYETTE, b/bp 03 Jun 1908 Ste-Thecle, Champlain Co., [Ferdinand] son of Marie Annésie PRONOVOST, b. Dec 1877, Quebec grandson of Francois Xavier PRONOVOST, Quebec great grandson of ___***___ PRONOVOST. and Anna Zoe PRONOVOST born 18 Apr 1905, East Berlin, Hartford County, CT, USA daughter of George PRONOVOST, born about Dec 1874 in Connecticut & Zoe ________, born June 1871 in Quebec, married about 1896 in Connecticut granddaughter of ________ PRONOVOST great granddaughter of ___***___ PRONOVOST. There is a family story that Joe & Anna were "second and a half cousins", and shared a great grandfather, but came from different wives. The names to get to this great grandfather were not passed down though. Now seeing PRONOVOST on both sides, the story is starting to make sense. My problem now is Anna's PRONOVOST's father was George PRONOVOST, born Dec 1874 in Connecticut according to the 1900 census. His parents were both French Canadian, but I have yet to find out their names. How do I connect an unknown PRONOVOST who left Canada to settle in Connecticut (and married in Connecticut), to being a brother or half brother of Francois Xavier PRONOVOST??? I should be able to find a George PRONOVOST, age 5 in the 1880 US census but the name must have been written differently, and with no other family members to match on, it's hard to take a guess on other spellings. Is there a PRONOVOST genealogy out there somewhere?
