One sibling, Anna PARENTEAU married Jean Laramee 23 Jul 1895, St-Francois-du-Lac. Because of name similarity, Anna and Marie Anne and that no Marie Anne in 1881 Canadian Census, see below, it is possible that Marie Anne and Anna are the same person. The Chambre des Notaires du Quebec put on line a sample of it (around 30 000 notices out of the 300 000 records of Parchemin) but they recently removed it. So nothing left on line. Bertrand Desjardins
Thank you Bertrand. That is disappointing to hear. Even though it was only a sample, it was much better than nothing for those of us that are too far away to access the full version. Perhaps it will go online as a pay service like the PRDH. That would be wonderful! Sincerely, Steve Nicklen. Steve - I just spent about 1/2 hour looking for this - it may be gone :-( If I remember correctly, I think it was put up at the time of some anniversary of the notaires and around the time the data was published on CD. It was located at the site of the chambres des notaires, but it was in conjunction with archiv-histo. The cdnq website has been redesigned since the last time I looked there, so that's why I think the database is no longer there. You could send a message to the cdnq. I've tried contacting archiv-histo before, but they don't seem to answer mail....... I hope someone knows the answer. A good gravemarker site in Northern Ontario is Murray Pletsch's NE Ontario Gravemarker Gallery http://nocgg.maddoc.net Another Source for researchers in Ontario and parts of Quebec is the Provincial Index site run by the Ontario Genealogical Society. An ambitious endeavor that is being added to regularly http://www.ogs.on.ca/ogspi/welcome.htm
Does anyone know if this database is still available somewhere? The link I have is no longer working. Thank you, Steve Nicklen.
Hello, I have been still trying to find out about the only one of my great-grandfather's family who did not migrate to Boston, MA, in the late 1800's. Robert KERR and Elizabeth HENDERSON (b1827 Gore) (first cousins) married in 1851 and had five children. My great-grandfather was William Robert KERR, b1852. Robert and Elizabeth then had two daughters, Hannah "Jane" KERR and Mary Ann KERR, and then two sons, Robert KERR and Joseph KERR. In the early 1870's, William and his sister, Mary, migrated to Boston, MA, and both married in nearby Everett, MA. In the 1890's (?) the parents and two younger brothers migrated to Boston, the parents dying here a few years later. For a couple of years I couldn't find out what happened to Hannah Jane KERR, b1854 Gore. My "guess" is that she had either married and remained in Canada or died young. A year ago I found out that there was a couple in Eaton Township, Compton County, which could have been my "Jane" KERR and her husband - William H. SMITH. But, I've seen that researchers disagree as to which Jane KERR this lady was (out of several born around the same time). One researcher believes that she came from Island Brook. The 1881 Census has William and Jane SMITH with son, Henry, 2. The 1901 Census has William and Jane SMITH with daughter, Gertrude, 19. When they married in 1877, William SMITH was a farmer in Cookshire in Compton County, but he was born in Eaton. They had their son, Henry SMITH in Apr. 1878, and their daughter, Gertrude SMITH, in Aug. 1882. ..Last night I went to the Archives of the QC-Etanglo List and found two postings from Jan. 2000. One person quoted some of the above information from the "History of Compton County." Another person offered information from "parish records from Eaton." One item was the marriage of George W. SMITH and Jane COATES in Aug. 1854. With that information, I went to the LDS site and found George SMITH in the 1881 Census living in Eaton Township with his wife and three adult-children: George SMITH, 56, Jane SMITH, 49, Sheldon SMITH, 24, Jessie SMITH, 22 (f), and Hibbard SMITH, 18. ..William SMITH, 25 and married in 1881, could very well have been their older son. (I also found a George W. SMITH, Age 25 (bCAN) in 1881 in Michigan/USA, who could have been a son in the above family.) To get back to William's wife, Jane KERR, one researcher has this lady as the daughter of Robert KERR and Margaret HENDERSON and being born in Jan. 1846. But, if you go by the ages of Mrs. Jane SMITH in the 1881 and 1901 Census reports, she should have been born in either 1852 or 1853. My Hannah "Jane" KERR was born in Aug. 1854, and my opinion is that she would have been closer in age to Mrs. SMITH than the other Jane KERR. (There was another Hannah Jane KERR, also born in 1846, who was the daughter of William KERR and Elizabeth BEATTIE. (The two ladies born in 1846 were born or baptised two weeks apart.) And, this Hannah KERR reportedly married William WOODS.) FYI: I believe that the Robert KERR and Margaret HENDERSON were not directly related to the Robert KERR and Elizabeth HENDERSON, having arrived at different times, and settled in different towns. But, that is still being researched, I believe. FYI: My great-great-grandparents, Robert and Elizabeth KERR, had moved out of Gore Township and lived in both Morin Heights and Mille Isles at different times, and I believe that they moved to NewPort, Compton County, in the 1870's (?) as they were in the 1881 Census there (with just their two younger sons). FYI: I see the COATES surname mentioned every now and then. In addition to the reference to Mrs. Jane (COATES) SMITH, the "parish records of Eaton" mention the marriage of a Joseph COATS and Mary MAYNARD in Apr. 1844. QUESTION: A few years ago, I heard that there was a well-known resort in LaChute, Argenteuil County, named "the KERR Farm." It is mentioned in a history booklet about the town. Does anyone know whether that "KERR resort" is still run as a "place to stay?" (I understand there are still KERR descendants living in that area.) Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) April and May What a wonderful way to spend your day ! Warmth and sunshine trees of oak and pine under which you dine ! Tulips of yellow and red gentle breezes above your head How can you stay in bed ? (Me .. 1988)

Would like to know the parents of Jean Baptiste Loiselle married to Elodie Gagné, daughter of Charles Gagné and Madeleine Lavallee, on 4 July 1868. The Gagne family lived in St-Jean Baptiste de Rouville so the marriage could possibly be there. Elodie died in North Grovenordale, Connecticut in 1936. Any leads appreciated -- Alice Cardinal McRae

Boston States Migrations Family History Fair Boston States Migrations Family History Weekend, Friday June 11 - Sunday June 13, 2004 Waltham Massachusetts The "Boston States Migrations" includes more than 400 years of circular migrations between eastern Canada, New York and New England for a whole array of ethnic, religious, occupational and family groups. Many folks went west only to return to this circle of families that still go "over home", even if the homefolks say they are "from away"! Politics, war, trade, famine, disease, shipping practices, land, rivers, turnpikes, canals, railroads, timber, mining, the Industrial Revolution, the growth of both urban and farm communities created push/pull factors for group chain migrations. Collateral families, neighbors, co-workers and parish members created "sister communities", where resources in one location solve puzzles in another. Join us for a weekend of events and resources, featuring Sandra Devlin, Atlantic Canada Genealogy Columnist; Paul Bunnell, Loyalist Resources; Maureen Taylor, Photo Identification, Preservation, Heritage Albums and Scrapbooks; Sharon Howland, Washington County Maine Resources; PLUS! There's been some discussion of late regarding the disclosure of data on "living" individuals through our databases. This is a quote from another list regarding "private" information: ******************************************************* I think it's important to say that *some* kinds of information make identity theft a concern; others should not. I have done a fair amount of research through the FTC and FBI to try and nail down what *actually* puts someone at risk for identity theft (or, more commonly, identity forgery). Names and ages alone do NOT. Neither does ones mother's maiden name, regardless of all the handwringing about it that goes on in the genealogy community. The reason in these cases is that the information is too readily available from lawfully public sources. (Soapbox alert ON: According to an FTC lawyer as early as 1999, any organization that uses a mother's maiden name for identification is "incompetent to the point of negligence". Although some banks still do use maiden names, almost all of them require additional identification before access is given to an account. If your bank is one of the very few Neanderthal institutions that still gives account access based solely on a mother's maiden name, especially if that can be done over the phone, SWITCH BANKS. Seriously! :Soapbox alert OFF) * The poster went on to say* BTW, here are some kinds of information that MIGHT put one at risk in the wrong hands: current street address and telephone number; current club and association memberships; and, of course Social Security, bank account, credit card, or driver's license numbers. The really likely causes of ID theft are along these lines: have your snail mail stolen; lose your wallet or purse; go to the doctor; or, become deceased. There are NO reported cases of genealogical information being used for ID theft. ********************************************************
Hello, Seeing the SMITH name on one of the Lists yesterday reminded me that I am still interested in learning about the family of William and Jane SMITH of Compton County in the late 1800's/early 1900's. The 1881 Census has William, Age 25, Jane, 28, and son, Henry, 2. The 1901 Census has William, 44, Jane, 49, and daughter, Gertrude, 19. I believe they remained living in Compton County. When I first found this couple a year or so ago, I thought this Mrs. Jane SMITH might have been the missing sister of my great-grandfather. If she was, she would have been .. Hannah "Jane" KERR, b1854 in Argenteuil County, to parents: Robert KERR and Elizabeth HENDERSON. They moved from Argenteuil to Compton in the 1860's, I think. However, looking at some of the family-tree information linked to the web site for "the Former Township of Gore" in Argenteuil Co., I found a researcher had the wife of William H. SMITH as Jane KERR, b1/1846 ("of Ireland"), and being the daughter of Robert KERR and Margaret HENDERSON. (I believe this was a Robert KERR who was not part of the original KERR / HENDERSON group arriving in Gore Township in 1823/1824. But, he was associated with them later, so he might have been related.) http://www3.telus.net/public/mcelroye/webpages/gore.html/intro.html This researcher has William H. SMITH born in 8/1856 in Compton County, and marrying Jane KERR in 1/1877 in Compton County. FYI: There was another Hannah Jane KERR, born 1846 in Argenteuil County who was the daughter of William KERR anad Elizabeth BEATTIE. This Hannah reportedly married William WOODS, b1843 "of Ireland." My opinion is that the Hannah "Jane" KERR born 1854 is closer in age to Mrs. Jane (KERR) SMITH born ~1852/1853 ... than the Jane KERR born in 1846. (Note: The Jane KERR and the Hannah Jane KERR born in 1846 were born (or baptised) only two weeks apart.) In summary, I'm wondering if anyone knows which SMITH family that William H. SMITH, b1856 Compton Co., came from? And, does anyone know what happened to William and Jane SMITH's son, Henry SMITH, b~1879 in Compton Co., and their daughter, Gertrude SMITH, b~1882 in Compton Co.? And, I'd like to know whether other people have opinions on whether the wife of William SMITH could have been my great-grandfather's sister. My great-grandfather was William Robert KERR born Argenteuil Co., who went with his family to Compton Co. But, around 1872, he migrated to Boston, MA. His other sister, Mary Ann KERR, might have made the trip with him. (She married a William McGINNIS/McINNIS near Boston.) Possibly in the 1890's, the parents, Robert and Elizabeth KERR, migrated to Boston, bringing their two younger sons, Robert and Joseph KERR, with them. (The younger brothers again migrated to Washington State.) Their sister, Hannah Jane KERR, is the only one unaccounted for. Thank you for your time.
